More info from the official website:

What is Death Stranding?
From legendary game creator Hideo Kojima (Metal Gear Solid) comes an all-new, genre-defying open world action adventure for PS4, starring Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux and Lindsay Wagner.
In the near future, mysterious explosions have rocked the globe, setting off a series of supernatural events known as the Death Stranding. With otherworldly creatures plaguing the landscape, and mass extinction imminent, it’s up to Sam Porter Bridges to travel across the ravaged wasteland and save humanity from impending annihilation.

Face unique challenges
Arm yourself and take aim at a variety of objectives in your mission to reunite a broken nation, while balancing under the weight of your cargo as you travel. Protect your supplies from wild bandits, and stay safe from the terrifying Beached Things… or face failing those who depend on you.

Death is not the end
There is no traditional ‘game over’ state in Death Stranding. Lose your life during combat and you’ll find yourself in an upside-down realm, searching for a way back to the living. Choose your combat methods carefully, as killing your foe is almost never the solution – and every death carries a consequence

Assist other players
Help other travellers without ever crossing paths via asynchronous online gameplay. Send supplies, share safe houses and walk in the footsteps of fellow couriers to reunite civilization.

It's almost like they don't want me to buy this game.

Like, specifically me. They know me and are like "Screw that guy, he can play some weeb trash no one likes".

What's up with creators having scenes where women are tied up and touched in suggestive ways? Gee. Dunno. Maybe it's a massive social problem.

Up until that gun showed up in the WW1 area, I was really digging the weaponless combat and the freeform traversal. Anchoring the rope to climb down and using the ladder to scale that section of wall both looked really neat.

Did they announce another Darksiders already?!

It sounds so so ambitious, I really hope they deliver (no pun intended) on an exceptional game. If it has MGS V's shooting & stealth mechanics I'm not one bit worried about the gameplay.

I think that's optional Chris, it's probably there if you want it but I'd doubt they'd force it on people who just want to play without any of those interactions.

Please. I said weeb trash. If you wanna brute force Darksiders into being weeb then you have to specify it as chuuni trash, and the only reason that makes it weeb is because no one else knows what I'm talking about but is pretty sure I sleep with a body pillow at night.

On one hand I have no doubt there would be an offline mode. On the other hand this is Hideo Kojima and it wouldn't shock me if he brute forced you to work with his vision or something.

This sort of asynchronous multiplayer shoved into single-player just has me sighing and shrugging.

You can blame Dark Souls for that kind of asynchronous multiplayer. That's what really seems to have popularized it.

I'm really having trouble seeing what Darksiders has to do with uppity middle schoolers, but I am absolutely confident that you sleep with a body pillow.

Kojima games have always had to main type of contents for me; stuff I found unapologetically cool and "unedited Kojima crazyness I have to put up with in order to reach the next greenfield of cool stuff".

I've played most of the Metal Gear games, and when I grade those games as a ratio of content A: content B, most come on top;

Metal Gear Solid for the original PS; 90:10
Metal Gear 2 for the PS2; 70:30
MG3 for the PS2; 80:20
MG4 for the PS3: 50:50
MG5 for the PS4: 30:70

Based on the two trailers available, Death Stranding seems to be a 1:999,999,999
I can forsee myself rolling my eyes at every cutscene.

I'm seriously considering passing altogether on this one.

I'm not exactly sure when Steam as a platform went from paladin of computer gaming and friendly neighborhood darling to who we love to hate today... but I'm thinking Kojima will go from misunderstood creative genius to misogynistic weirdo in about two games; this one included.

You got your tenses wrong. HAS gone, and some time ago too.

But your not forced to play with anyone. They specifically state you never have to cross paths with other players.

I'm looking forward to reading everyone's reactions to this game. Skillups spoiler pfreere iew. I watched 10 mins.

The Guardian's review is up.

What leapt out at me was "About 80% of your time is spent trudging across mountains delivering parcels."

I think this is a 'pick-it-up-when-its-a-tenner-to-see-whether-the-hype-was-justified' game. Not a Day 1 purchase for me... at all!

I didn't have any interest to begin with but after hearing the Beastcast I don't think I'll download it once it's a PS+ freebie.

Well, this is definitely not for me. I get creating beautiful art and experimenting for the sake of it, and I've seen other reviews offering high praise for what Kojima's communicating and expressing throughout - all well and good, but non-tedious gameplay has to be there for me to spend time with a video game.

Easy Allies Review

I just canceled my preorder. On an unrelated note, I plan on picking up The Outer Worlds with this extra $60 I am no longer allocating to other things.

The reviews of this game are baffling to me.

"Here is a list of things that are bad and will make you angry. Final score = 9/10!"

It's a love/hate it seems. Those who hate it basically describe it as repetitive fetch quests with not enough action, while those who love it say it's weird, bad in spots yet compelling in others.

Watching the GB Quicklook now. I love that this thing exists. I don't have time/money to buy it right now, but maybe I will someday.

I don't think I've ever played a Kojima game that I've enjoyed. They're invariably incredible artistry overlaid on top of bafflingly awful game design choices.

If you wanted to save $59 of that $60, Outer Worlds is on XBOX Game Pass which has a $1month-long trial. You just need Windows 10 to run it on PC. The downloads are kind of slow (Even on fiber I was getting between 0 and 8 megs a sec last night) but I figure I can probably beat the game in a month and save a lot of money.

Oh man, the Like mechanic is so damn funny.

7:45 rant from Jeff had me laughing pretty hard.

Still can't wait to try it myself when it lands on PC.

The exploration & discovery loops make me think of my favorite aspects of Fallout 4. That wanderlust vibe.

What some are calling mundane delivery routines remind me of that Zen gameplay found in Farming Simulator and ETS2.

Sounds right up my alley.

Listened to the Kinda Funny Review, with Greg loving it, he mentioned the story was good, performances great, that unlike many Metal Gear games it was well wrapped up by the time you got to the end of the game. Greg also loved the traversal mechanics.

Fran & Andy who are both playing it methodically, taking their time to explore & not main lining the story are really high on the game. They too dig the traversal gameplay, getting upgrades to help navigate the mountains, rivers & different types of terrain.

Fran even mentioned about there being different ways to tackle the BT's. It seemed there are different tools or items that can be used that change how you approach these scenarios. The expanded idea of the Dark Souls (really Demons Souls but anyways) asynchronous multiplayer
& the way that it connected players in its world sounds glorious.

Tim played 5 hours & it wasn't for him. Imran completed it & doesn't know how he feels about it, although when you listen to him he's more on the negative side of things. He got frustrated in many of the aspects & difficulty of the climbing, wading through rivers, slippy ground, many times leading to dropping/damaging your cargo. It is all the things that Fran, Greg & Andy really enjoyed.

The main problems some people have seem to be pacing, repetition & cutscenes like Sam showering or crafting materials taking way too long. Some issues with the menus being a bit frustrating to go back & forth between, when taking a mission & fabricating the items your about to take out with you.

The fact that you don't have to kill anyone (humans at least) is something I always like to see in games.

A talking point that I find almost reassuring is that the game is a slow burn. Andy mentioned that he started to 'get it' about 9 hours in, with the gameplay loop of prepping for your journey, picking your tools, looking at your map, plotting your course. You then progress through the story, your successful deliveries netting you rewards eg a medical item from a doctor, other tools, suits etc helping with the journey's you go out on.

Fran also mentioned that it feels like there's a fairly high skill ceiling in your approach to how you tackle the landscapes. There are apparently 50+ tools all with tangible uses in going up against these harsh environments.

I totally expected Death Stranding to be a divisive game & it likely will be even more so when it gets into the hands of the masses. I've been reading through the metacritic scores & its got a hell of a lot of top marks with high praise, there's obviously some scores on the lower end of the scale but so far at least they seem to be in the minority.

Whatever people think of it, I'm just glad that its been made. Its bold, original & able to be made in the AAA space which plays it notoriously safe 90% of the time. Combat taking more of a back seat to exploration, planning & traversing these organic environments that look absolutely gorgeous, lonely & haunting.....I can't wait.

Here's the spoiler free Kinda Funny discussion. I thought it was fascinating.

He really articulates his points extremely well. I think this a brilliant video to watch (I listened to it) if you want to know about the meat of Death Stranding's gameplay & why he finds it fascinating & like nothing else.

"Make the Subtext Text! Go!: The Game" is pretty much exactly what I've been expecting/dreading since this was first announced.

We have now entered Kojima's darkplace.

The more I learn about it the more I want to play it. Too bad about the inevitable sexism though.
