What It's Like to Pay 50% of Your Income in Taxes

The last line: "Mental Health issues are on the rise, this may explain the Danish obsession with death metal". Wow, great non sequitur tacked on to a non sequitur.

That whole closing statement comes out of nowhere. The whole point of the video is to get the opinion of a couple guys about their taxes. They're pretty clear that it's harder for them because they choose to be entrepreneurs in the middle of the capital. They're also clear they don't have to pay medical, child care, or education expenses, and they have a solid safety net, so it evens out. The conclusion is they have problems, and taxes are high?

Cody’s Showdy takes us to Cody’s Shounty.

Oh look, the Irish electoral system. I do love the counts in multi-seat constituencies, trying to predict where the transfers will go as each candidate is either elected or eliminated.

I won't lie, I really enjoyed it.

Those facts sure did not care about Ben's widdle feelwings.

That was incredible. And the matter-of-factly scathing critique of Shappy by the panel at the end. So good.

Accusing Andrew Neil of being on the left?! Either Shapiro better do his research or retreat back to his Fox safe spaces.

Is Shapiro really an alt-right hero though? Seems a weird thing to say that rabid anti-semites would love an orthodox Jew. Seems more like a useful idiot to them at best.

“He’s one of the good ones.” The alt-right will adopt any minority figure who even tangentially agrees with them because it gives them an out when someone calls them on their blatant racism.

Why drugs cost more in America

Mmmmm.... I have minor issues with the conclusion. It's not simply that drugs are expensive in the States because they're cheaper everywhere else - it's that in order to maintain a very high degree of profitability drugs are expensive in the States because they're cheaper everywhere else. I think that's an important point, and one that lessens the "the States are bearing the burdens for the rest of the world" impact that comes across otherwise.

Speaker stuns 2019 Morehouse grads, to pay off student debt

AP wrote:

A billionaire technology investor stunned the entire graduating class at Morehouse College when he announced at their commencement Sunday that he would pay off their student loans __ estimated at up to $40 million.

Robert F. Smith, this year’s commencement speaker, made the announcement while addressing nearly 400 graduating seniors of the all-male historically black college in Atlanta. Smith, who is black, is the Founder and CEO of Vista Equity Partners, a private equity firm that invests in software, data, and technology-driven companies.

It's a feel good story that's only tempered for me because Vista Equity Partners bought a company I worked for and well and truly f*cked me and many other employees and customers over.

So it’s not a feel good story, then. If we had a robust welfare state and billionaires didn’t exist / paid their taxes, they wouldn’t need him to pay their student loans.

Most “inspirational” news items these days are about someone finding a minor reprieve from systemic dysfunctions caused by capitalism

This was actually thoughtful and endearing and I hate it and everything is beyond f*cking insane these days.

At this rate, assuming we're all still alive in 10 years, Neuromancer and Snow Crash are going to seem as quaint as The Andy Griffith Show. No writer, even one who had submerged himself in a tank of DMT could have imagined our present.

Have you read Neuromancer recently? It's already quaint as f*ck

That's like... beyond meta.

Also: "Let's get featured on r/FellowKids... even though we're already a moderator!"

I politely called out what looked like a "fellow kids" type marketing message in the iOS subreddit recently, and the response was incredibly hostile. Creeped me out more than a little bit.

So, how do we deal with this?

Distorted video of Nancy Pelosi edited to sound drunk spreading across social media

The video has been slowed to about 75% of its original speed, according to the Washington Post, which first reported on the distorted video. The pitch has also been altered after it was slowed down to make it sound more like Pelosi's actual voice.

When everyone has the same facts and can have a discussion it is one thing but when one side gets altered facts it breaks the system.

Realistically? We don't deal with it and it contributes to the destruction,of our Democracy.

I knew something was going to ruin my fascination with Stephen A. Smith through Snapchat's baby filter...

Here's the WaPo report with more info on the altered video of Speaker Pelosi.

I would HIGHLY recommend ContraPoints on YouTube to anyone who hasn't seen her channel. Really well developed arguments with amazing set design, costumes, and cinematography/lighting.

Here's her... response to Jordan Peterson. Potentially NSFW.

Well that's an instant subscribe. I would never have believed I could be so entertained by a brief description of post modernism, and that bit is only an aside!

Likewise with PhilosophyTube these days, he's definitely taking hints from ContraPoints.

Literally, she's listed as a Makeup and Nail Consultant on that video.

Good time re-up my favorite video he’s done

Both of these videos point out the various ways in which a particularly popular YouTuber is a spectacularly mendacious liar.
