Rocket League Catch All

Probably true.

I was messing around with a helicopter themed car in freeplay and just noticed that if you have the helicopter engine sound on and you spend around 7 seconds in the air without touching your wheels to anything it starts playing Ride of the Valkyries while you fly

Now if only I could figure out how to stay in the air that long during a game with only 100 boost. Maybe fly around the field from boost to boost?

I need a napalm boost to go with it. I love the smell of napalm in the morning!

Played a bunch of hockey last night for my bronze and some silver rewards.

Can confirm. Did solo standard placements, won 8/10 and played very well in 9/10. But because teammates decide that scoring in their own goal is just as good: gold 3.

I’ve seen some good Reddit posts analyzing the rank distribution in standard modes but can’t find them now. The distribution in solo standard has traditionally trended lower and they’ve tried to compensate by adjusting the thresholds. Don’t think it’s worked tho. In the upper ranks it takes forever to find a match due to small player base in playlist.

I’ve tried to rank up in solo standard a few times. I always give up. Even this season I was saying to myself “this is the one I finally get my solo ranks up” and yet after only a couple games of solo standard I’m already sick of it.

Winning 8 of 10 will put you slightly above where you were last time you played that game type. Had you won all 10 you’d barely be any higher. It’s a soft reset. Hasn’t been a full reset since season 3 and that season was a 9 month long mess I don’t want to repeat.

There was a pretty heavy rank reset for champ ranks a few seasons ago (forget which one) but that’s about it. Every other rank has been soft reset and TBH they shifted all ranks up a few times so you’ve all benefitted from the changes more than been penalized. I’m not sure how much this affected each playlist so possibly it had less of an effect on solo standard.

I wish I knew what it was about that playlist. Sometimes I meet great people in there and sometimes it is a toxic mess. I should learn my lesson and just avoid it forever. Dropshot is way more fun anyways.

Here is a good site that lists the rank distributions for every season excluding the one that just ended.

I glanced at the players before the game starts and I'm thinking "please teammate don't connect". He didn't. Phew.

That was great.

The diamond one is good to watch. “I’ve had games where I sit there and say I don’t deserve Diamond”. I felt that statement.

I enjoyed watching this one as well

It’s been a while since I saw the game through the eyes of a new player

Was diamond 2 (3v3) last season and got ranked in there in placements, but dropped quite dramatically this season, so much so I once went into platinum 3!

Decided to really work on my game, some of the videos on here and talk of air control has really made me focus on that, and so far I'm starting to get the hang a bit of controlling the car upside down and a lot more with air roll. I'm still struggling to transition it over to games though, I'm trying a lot of non-competitive at the moment and can't seem to find the opportunities to use it. Is the best way to just keep trying in training until it just comes out naturally in a game rather than going into the games with it as my focus?

People usually have to focus on the new behavior to change what they do in game otherwise we fall back to well known behaviors. It will become natural and automatic eventually. How long depends on the amount of change and personal factors. Problem is it messes with your consistency and reliable play if you are forcing yourself to change.

Generally speaking when you want to win (and are at a rank you can compete at) you should focus on doing things you can do consistently/comfortably and when you want to improve you should always be going for things a little beyond what you can do consistently/comfortably.

Some people focus on being reliable in ranked and work on changing things only in casual (and training). Some do it all in ranked. Your choice. Just be aware of what you are focusing on and set your expectations accordingly. Making a large change in your behavior can definitely cost you rank in the short term if you are thinking about your play rather than relying on muscle memory.

When I play casual (especially GWJer games) I go in with a plan to focus on a small number of mechanics and I force myself to do them even when they are not the best highest percentage play at the time. Sometimes I play entire games on the ground to focus on my dribbles. Sometimes I play most of the game from the wall. Sometimes I refuse to shoot and focus on just purposeful passing. It helps a lot. I definitely focus on small mechanics a lot more in casual. I wave dash and Paschy Swirl every moment I can just to get that muscle memory built in game like settings. I find it is best to do this in a game among people you know so you don’t have to deal with tilting teammates mad that you refused to shoot on an open net.

I try to use the training stuff to get better but never really feel it helps so I end up just working on things in casual mode. I will do the drill over and over and over but never get it. For example the aerial training that comes with the game. I don't know how many times I have tried those and still can't get them even the pro ones. Goalie and striker, no problem, but the aerial I just can't get it. I suppose it's possible I've just hit the max of my skills at this game which is ok too. I still enjoy playing it even if I'm sort of stuck at high plat level.

pizzaddict did you try using that aerial defense drill to work on your aerials?

To be honest you can get by just fine on offence without amazing aerials. It's defense where you really need fast accurate aerials if you want to rank up. A lot of players would be far more successful in ranked if they went for less offensive aerials that are beyond their skill and focused on good power shots.

I can confirm that at higher ranks solo standard feels a bit more like a team game. Unfortunately it was taking 15 minutes to find a game last night so there was a ton of waiting around in free play while doing my qualifiers.

I’ve found that watching top level solo duel matches is a great way to get myself in the right headspace for reliable safe ranked play (regardless of which mode I’m playing). I’ve been watching Johnnyboi’s “The Four” tournament between matches.

Another new way I’ve started warming up is I play 1v2 ranked hoops on my Xbox. Forces me to play very smart and in control.

I came close last season: I ranked into Champ, but I didn't end up getting the 10 wins for the rewards.

This season, I got the wins.

Congrats!

Hopefully they have a good reward item for your first champ reward. Likely not gonna be wheels again until next season.

Congratulations! Feel I'm a long way from this. Out of curiosity, between which two ranks did you find the biggest leap in skill? I'm currently finding Diamond 1 to Diamond 2 a bit of difficult transition to adapt to.

Thank you.

While answering this, please understand that I am not trying to disparage anyone's rank. I am answering the question asked from my point of view, and giving my opinion only.

On the whole, the hardest rank transition I had was getting into diamond. However, between the time I did that and now, it appears that they re-centered that MMR zone to Diamond 2-ish, meaning I think P3-D1 transition when I did it is now mid-Diamond transition. (I tried to find a MMR-by-season breakdown, but I can only find population percentile breakdowns, which doesn't really help determine personal growth vs. population shift.)

I will say, having dropped through and gained back up the entirety of the Diamond rank last season, I feel Diamond probably has the biggest play changes over the expanse of the rank. A D1 game felt different than a D2 game, felt different than a D3 game. Diamond is also the only rank I have experienced for a while in Standard, so that last statement may honestly be true for all ranks.

Congrats disco! That's awesome!

Played a bit of ranked doubles with Dorkmanship tonight. It's been a few seasons since I focused on doubles so it was a nice change of pace.

I was one win away from my next rank last night while solo queueing in ranked standard. Loaded into a new game and randomly ran into 2 friends on the other team. Was kinda surprised since they are quite a bit higher ranked than me normally. Played a very close and fun game but they beat me by 1 in overtime. Dreams ruined by friends.

Now you know how it feels =P

GGs last night Dork and Carl. I think we won nearly every game after a couple of early losses.

Welcome back to champ 2 Dork.
