Every 10 years seems like a decent pace...

There have been four, arguably five, Avengers movies over the last ten years.

I wouldn't consider all of them big events though...

And its ending is downright unpleasant. When was the last time a movie this big, from a studio this big, with a budget this big, ended up with a box office this big, despite being such a major downer of a story? Inconceivable!

Empire Strikes Back?

It made the most sense. Not sure what the Russo's were talking about in that other dumb interview.

The only MCU story that could possibly get me more excited than a TV show dedicated to Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye is if they announced a show solely and entirely about Grant Wart coming back from the dead again.

Please don't say this. They might hear you.

Can we find someone else who said this? I don't want to give oily credit for anything.

Joke's on me. There's already a show that's solely and entirely about Grant Ward coming back from the dead again.

This is getting out of hand - now there are two of them!

Don't get me (or Higgledy) started on how incredible that show is!

Yeah, but they've gone like... 10 episodes without running out of other ideas than bringing him back to life.

I'm starting to wonder if Infinity War didn't cause more problems with the overall story line than it solved, or set up satisfyingly.

If you take Ragnarok>Infinity War>Endgame as a continuum IW reset a lot of the growth of Thor and Hulk as people so where they go in Endgame feels weird. Endgame Hulk especially feels more like a development of Ragnarok Hulk than IW Hulk and the transition wouldn't be so jarring if he hadn't spent the whole of IW as Banner in an Iron Man suit.

I actually have the feeling that over time Infinity War is going to be seen as one of the weaker of the 'big' MCU movies. It's tonally very dark, Thanos' motivation makes no sense and undercuts a lot of the character development that has taken place.

I hope that going forward Marvel will minimise the big 'event' movies a big, or at least scale them back. They achieved something remarkable, but planning the next phase out better will, IMO, make for stronger movies.

Respectfully, I disagree with most of what you've stated.

Ragnarok Hulk is direct result of Age of Ultron Hulk, he's now convinced there's no place for the Hulk on Earth.
Ragnarok Hulk is happy because he has found a place in the universe; he's found a place where a Monster can be a Champion (capital M, capital C). He's cheered, respected, admired as such.

IW is shocking to Ragnarok Hulk; Ragnarok Hulk had abandoned the Banner persona because Hulk saw Banner as the weaker of the two. And then Thanos comes along and plays with Hulk for about 8 seconds before literally pummeling him into the ground. When Thor and Loki are beaten, the last hope, Hulk, too strong and fearsome for Earth, now a Champion, has no purpose. He's actually afraid of Thanos.

Banner has to step up when the Hulk breaks.
Smart Hulk is the final character growth arc for both, Banner and Hulk. It's a pity this growth had to take place off screen, but there's simply no time in a three hour movie or pacing in such a complicated narrative.

In re to Thanos; I believe IW will hold up many years into the future. The movie strikes a much darker tone on purpose. Thanos is such a fearful force because he breaks (undercuts) character's and their growth; not in spite of it. Nothing survives in the face of Thanos; the movie is written on purpose to break characters left and right: it breaks the Hulk's character growth. The movie wrote this on purpose. IW breaks Quill, first by him failing Gamora and then for losing her to Thanos. This was on purpose as well, I expect to see Quill in GotG3 desperate to find Gamora looking for atonement, not romance. It hurt Thor pretty baldy at the end of IW and completely crushed Thor in the opening act of Endgame. You can see Thor has little left to hang on to in his scene with Rocket when they're heading to Nidavellir.

IW decided to make Thanos it's protagonist, while it kept Thanos as a very clear villain in Endgame. You can see drastic differences in IW Thanos personality than EG's Thanos. IW Thanos sees himself as a savior, the only one brave enough to save the universe by doing the right thing. Endgame Thanos, 9 years younger, sees himself mostly as a god. The older, more mature IW Thanos has grown significantly from EG Thanos. EG Thanos will enjoy torturing Earth because we had the audacity to defend ourselves. IW Thanos recognized and applauds Tony Stark on Titan for defending his homeworld. IW gave Thanos a growth arc retroactively by giving us a younger, meaner Thanos in Endgame.

On your final point; I agree. After literally saving the universe, the MCU needs to find a multi-movie thread with a much smaller stake. It's difficult to have higher stakes than saving the universe.

Ahem. Higher stakes could be saving the multi-verse.

I hope they don't go that route. The whole Star Wars - a bigger death star! way of making more movies is bad.

But I guess Disney does own both so perhaps that is what the VPs think makes for great stories.

This is Spinal tap! "It goes to 11..." Uncomprehending look of why isn't that enough..

If it makes you feel any better, Oily wasn't the only one here with that theory. He was the only one to point out that Cap made out with his own niece, though...

The joke wasn't that the amp was louder but that labeling it as 11 flattered his ego instead of just making 10 louder. So what you're saying is that you still want the films to have ever-higher stakes, you just don't want them labeled in a hyperbolic way?

No. The person saying it in my joke was the Disney executives. They are trying to say that somehow their constantly "bigger" stakes meansomething when we as the interviewer (or just viewers) know it is silly.

When I said the multi-verse earlier I was joking, fwiw. I hope those aren't the future stakes.

I'm actually dreading the opposite. I'm dreading they're going to flood us with "content" to fill their new streaming service.

There's some poetry in that they kill the series after each Dark Phoenix. Maybe the 3rd time will be the charm,

That’s comic books, not (officially) movies.

This isn't really the thread for comic books news, but oh f*ck it, not like this isn't the umpteenth time this has played out.

Instead of a school and teachers PROF X will run a night club and be a DJ. He will recruit a new class of young DJ mutants and together will form a new team of touring DJ's visiting such hotspots as Ibiza where they will come up against Paris Hilton as Magneto

Ok, as a miniseries, I might buy that.

I don't know much about the X-men comics post mid 90s, it from the sounds of it they desperately need a proper reboot and this one seems quite well planned.

The Avengers Messed Up The Timeline Forever After Endgame

I heart you, Tangle.
