[News] Post a D&D Picture

Previous incarnations of Cleveland/P&C/D&D have had an image thread, to handle political cartoons and other image-based stuff that doesn't belong in the general post-a-picture threads.

If any of them spawn an extended discussion, please spawn it off into its own thread. Replies to non-picture replies should take the form of a link pointing to a post on a different discussion thread.

And I shouldn't have to say it, but the images still need to abide by the rules.

Nobody can "take" your job. Your boss will happily give it to whoever will do it the cheapest. Otherwise, I've been worrying about resumes and interviewing like a sucker all this time, when I could just take the CEO's job.

Right. So not “taking”, so much as being “willing” to work in a country you’re not legally allowed to work in for wages that are far below the market level.

I support immigration. I support Americans needing to be nimble and adapt to a changing world. But right now most of the gains of the system are accruing to the wealthiest 1%.

Are we saying that our support for immigrants is so strong that we’re okay with a race to the bottom that ends with, essentially, Neo-Feudalism?

FWIW, I'm 100% agreeing with you, and support socialism and strong unions. Capitalism is the problem, not immigration.

Sorry, Bonus. And thanks for clarifying.

I was having trouble telling where people stood in this thread, because it feels so obviously wrong to joke about people being “unemployable”.

The way I see it the guy holding the sign and the guy who’s “unemployable” should be allies.

A cursory glance at US history suggests that yes, very much that.

Neo-feudilism is the end state of pure capitalism, so yea i'd say lots of people are down for that. Most of them just refuse to countenance any thoughts they won;t end up the nobility in that scenario (even though they almost certainly won't if they aren't there already right now)

Capitalist Conservatism itself started out as and continues to be an attempt to maintain the structure of feudalism (well nobility, but same dif) under a different name. See Innuendo Studios endnote: conservatism video on the subject for a historical overview.

Undocumented immigrants in the US illegally aren’t taking away coal jobs. They’re getting paid under the table sub-standard wages for many jobs Americans *would* do if properly paid.

It's been repeatedly proven that this is not true (and you should be aware that your argument is a talking point most often put forward by anti-immigration conservative groups like CIS). When given the opportunity, even at good pay, Americans aren't doing these jobs. That's [i]why[j/i] immigrants are incentivized to come to the United States in the first place. Most dairy workers, for example, are paid a good bit more than minimum wage - but the hours are long and the work is physically demanding.

In 2017 research conducted by the Cornell Farmworker Program, 30 New York dairy farmers told us they turned to undocumented workers because they were unable to find and keep reliable U.S. citizens to do the jobs. (my emphasis)

There's a lot of factors that affect that, but one of the major ones is that native-born Americans simply don't exist in the numbers required to do the jobs. Without immigration, the country's population would be in a significant decline, and that's coupled with migration to cities and other occupations that pay more. Native-born Americans have so much job opportunity that it doesn't make economic sense to do those jobs ... and that's why immigrants are doing them.

The world we live in is one where capitalism has destroyed labor unions and told people that their labor wasn’t even worth paying minimum wages. The captains of industry have denigrated honest work and convinced people Americans won’t do those jobs until it eventually became a self fulfilling prophecy.

Only 2.7% of Americans work for minimum wage or lower - and those are mostly young, part-time, working in food service, and getting tips. That percentage has been declining steadily for decades. Americans as a group are valuable and expensive workers - the United States is in the top ten countries in the world for after-tax average pay.

Further, as has been pointed out many times before, Americans are obsessed with valuing work, often to an unhealthy degree. One of the first questions asked when Americans meet is "what do you do?" Among world societies, we are probably the one that most values honest work. And it has made us incredibly rich ... which is another reason immigrants will risk life and limb to come here, even now.

If you're unable to find and keep US citizens, you're not paying them enough. Even if it's above minimum wage, it's not the same as being properly paid.

I hate that this a political image.

Until those scientists in 1880 agree with the scientists in 2010 I think we should hold off on trying to solve the "problem".

Bring it to EE and let me know how it flies.

(I don’t visit that forum because it skews right wing.)

That is f*cking perfect.
Cmon cmon, put em up, put em up!

He's cowardly.. and lyin'!

It's not Photoshop, it's from the remastered edition.

Wow.

We live in a world where robots being the primary source of labor is less outlandish than the thought of retirement.

They've had one of those billboards in Oakland for months, perhaps even over a year. I thought it was funny too since I am not planning on retiring. They have another that reads "1 in 3 people won't retire. They haven't met you."

Democrats strategy does seem to lie low and hope that everyone gets sick of Trump and allows them to win so they can be obstructed some more and whine.
