Path of Exile catch-all

I’ve jumped in here and there on PC over the years, but never got hooked. I probably would have, but the awful FOV is a major turn-off. Picked it up on PS4 last night after hearing it finally released and... I think I’m finally hooked.

I still hate the FOV, but it seems like a good chill game for those days when I just want my fix of large-scale destruction from the comfort of my couch. I was also surprised to learn I prefer the use of the DualShock controller to M&K (for this particular game).

That’s good to hear. I’m going to finally try out the game on PS4. I find these types of games more tolerable with a controller and less wear on my arms.

Yeah, I meant D3 Robc. I’m surprised it’s direct control on console, that’s all.

If you are not already in the guild in PoE, let me know and I’ll hook you up this weekend. But I thought we brought you in already.

Which game, farley? PoE or D3? If it’s PoE, let me know when you want in the guild.

There's a PoE Guild??

Can I get invited? My Steam profile is in my sig.

The guild is in-game - they will need your PoE account or at least the character name.

Ahh, as soon as it is finished updating, I will provide it.

What are the benefits of joining a guild?

You get their nifty newsletter, and discounts at select restaurants.

Character name - Emisof

I'm back from my trip, so I'll get you this evening, most likely.

The guild includes people to talk to, to group with, and also a guild bank to contribute to and take from. Please limit bank items to Uniques or very, very useful starter stuff. If you don't know, don't bother with it.

Likewise, only take what you'll use right away, and return it before you trash a character or if you level out of it, so others can have a shot as well. Please don't loot the Guild bank for trade.

Hi, can I get a guild invite also??, will try to get going in this new season... IN my signature is my steam profile.
Tnx!!

Your sig is not set up, but I sent you a pm. I need a character name, preferably in the current league. That will then wait for you to log in and then pounce.

I am using a Bane build. Can you have 2 despair curses linked to bane and have them stack the impact on Bane? If not, what other curse/gem is recommended? (right now, I am level 40ish, and the highest item I have with multiple slots all linked is a 3B wand.

The default curse limit is one. There's a skill in the top-left of the tree that can raise it, and then there are assorted items that can raise it further. The same curse doesn't stack on itself multiple times. A good second curse might be Temporal Chains, which slows enemies and extends the duration of bane and despair.

More detailed curse mechanics here.

So I jumped in this week to try PoE out, and after about 3 hours in with a level 8 Ranger, I am enjoying it, but I've died maybe half a dozen times, which seems like a lot coming from Diablo 3. Are rangers basically glass cannons or is there an armor strategy I should already be following?

I've never really played an ARPG through endgame content, so I don't know how deep I'll go on builds, but the few gems I've picked up so far are really fun (Mirage Archer Support and Ballista).

POE is a little different than most ARPGS. There's a premium on life and resistances pretty much through the whole game. Pick gear (other than your weapon) that maximizes life and resists until you cap your resists then prioritize life over everything else. Best advice is to follow a league starter build on the skill tree. If you don't want to do that though, make sure to pick up life nodes whenever possible. A balanced build on the tree will easily do content until the endgame. When you get to level 88 or so, you can start shaving life for offence if needed...the late game becomes a balancing act. As your boss killing skill grows, you can move more towards offence.

My advice? Early levels, wear the best armor appropriate for your character type, but fill in holes with the highest armor level you have found. Armor for tanky types, Evasion for non-tanky fighters, and so forth.

For skills, find one that fits your intended build, and use that. DON'T duplicate it's function with another skill. For example, if you have a single arrow shot, don't then take two other single-shot skills. Pick one to stick with. Then you can supplement that with *different* effects, to maximize your ability to handle different situations. I like a single shot (for the big guys), a multiple or AOE shot (for mobs), some flavor of totem (to enhance my control of the situation) and then a few buffs.

Make sense?

I've been working on Enki's Arc Witch build, which is kind of new territory for me. I almost never play casters in video games. I mained a Warlock in Destiny 1/2, but that was about the closest I've come in recent memory until now. Given Destiny centers around FPS, I would say even that is a bit of a stretch.

The build has been a lot of fun and I have been steamrolling pretty much everything with minimal use of health potions. I actually died for the first time yesterday, at about level 32, to a melee mini-boss toward the end of Act 3. As far as gear goes, the only thing I've really had to pay attention to is ensuring my gear has enough linked slots for my skill gems and a couple of resist rings for the Act 1/2/3 bosses. Enki tells you which elemental resist rings to get and they have always been available at the vendor and/or extremely easy to pick up through constant loot drops.

It's probably safe to say that I've been building resists with my skills as well, but Enki tells you which skill gems to equip and when without delving too deep into the why. Overall, his guide is really detailed and delivers level-by-level instructions - including which quests to run and when, gear recommendations, several video guides for the build and beginner guides to the game itself. Definitely a plus for new players given how... deep this game appears to be.

If you're a new player and wondering where to start, I would definitely give this one a look.

Started playing the PS4 a few days ago. I really like it. Got the great feel I’ve come to expect from console Diablo (not quite to that level but close) and the gamepad UI design I actually quite thoughtful.

I noticed the lack of Leagues right off the getgo. Something that’s on the roadmap?

Can you define what you mean by “Leagues”? Both Diablo 3 have Leagues and Seasons, but they mean somewhat different things.

Edit - Okay, after Googling, I think I know what you mean. Your first character will go into the Synthesis league (the current one) automatically. Characters that follow will have their choice in the creation process. Maybe you have just created one?

That's correct, Robear: I've only created one character for now. One step at a time, brutha! Thanks for clarifying.

Remember, this game is the inverse of Diablo, so you’ll have a different character for each build you want to try, even within a class. So don’t be afraid to fire up a stable of different build experiments, and abandon the ones that don’t work out. Honestly, the more the merrier.

Played a fair bit over the weekend and finally managed to beat Izaro, earning some nifty gear in the process. Pressed on to Malachai and immediately got curb stomped. I felt like I was doing really well for the first 40 levels or so there and all of a sudden these two bosses are eating my lunch. I'll probably jump back in this evening and try Malachai again, but considering Izaro is like a level 33 boss and took me level 41 to beat, I'm guessing I'm going to need to grind another 10 levels or so to take Malachai down.

Sounds like you need to check your Life nodes and resist nodes/gear, Vypre.

Life and resist nodes? Sorry my newbishness, but do you mean the nodes on the skill tree? If so, I've been following Enki's Arc Witch leveling guide to the T...

Enki's Arc Witch - Build Guide

This is where I am at in the skill tree build right now:

Enki's Arc Witch - Skill Tree

Hmmm... It does say in the pros and cons that positioning matters, as well as long-lasting buffs and flask effects... Maybe those could be optimized?

General flow to the game question from a newbie! Love those, right?

How often should I be going back to town?
Was going to try and set up an item filter to use, but was unsure of how to set certain things.

Common items are the only way I can seem to get scrolls of wisdom, which are the only way to get portal scrolls. If I only pick up blue items, then i don't have any scrolls to ID them because they usually don't drop the scraps that turn into scrolls.

How do you handle those early levels and deciding what to pick up and what not to?

And where for the love of god can I find a portal spell gem instead of relying on scrolls???

Thanks guys!

Item filter - Try Neversink and just use the Standard filter until you know enough to change to another filter.

Different people go back to sell at different times. I tend to go when my inventory fills, and at the start of a league, I'll pick up all sorts of things to convert to currency. That ends fast, though, and after I have a small set of identify and portal scrolls, like 10 of each over what I carry, I only pick up yellow or higher items. I sell everything with less than 3 *connected* gem slots in the early game, and 4 later, UNLESS I can use it right away as an improvement over my current gear.

I would never waste a gem slot on a portal when it only takes a few hours to be swimming in scrolls.

Wow, I am really just starting to get an idea of how deep this rabbit hole goes.

I had no idea that gem sockets can be linked, and that sometimes they are linked in a certain order.

Jeebus, this sounds fun, but scary to learn.

They don't have to be linked in an order; just linked.

A great newbie tip is that Blacksmiths Whetstones, which aren't all that useful most of the time, can be sold for 4 wisdom scrolls. I would also set up Neversink's filter on 'regular' ASAP.

The best things to pick up early on (first 30 levels) are yellow items in a slot you don't have a yellow, 3 linked sockets of 3 different colors (sell for one Chromatic), and anything with 4 linked sockets. Each linked socket for you main skill can be a 40-50% increase in power. Also pick up any uniques (orange) as they will probably be useful early on.
