Bloodborne Catch-all

Uuuuugggggh. I remember raging and deliberately not quitting until I finished the fight because I didn't want to have that barrier to booting up again.

Cheese spoiler for Micolash:

Spoiler:

If you get him under that very opening, rather than trying to drop attack him, use ash and your gun to kill him. He won't leave the room, won't attack you, and won't get out of line of sight. Admittedly, I went through all my ash and most of my blood vials to use the blood bullets (it takes way more bullets than you carry), but in general, if you can wield the Evelyn, you can kill Micolash this way.

If anyone asks what it's like to play a From Software game, this is the video you show them.

Ah, right. I'm going to send it to a couple people I've never convinced to try. That should help.

Rom made me put the game down for over a year. After picking it back up I got roadblocked by both Gehrman and Ludwig.

Oh man, Ludwig was a HUGE roadblock for me, as well.

I'm on my third major roadblock now (having put the game down months ago) in the form of Defiled Amygdala.

I tried picking the game back up but banging my head against those two and grinding for vials just wasn't fun to come back to.

I made the mistake of picking up the DLC in an NG+ playthrough (only one I had) and resorted to actually 3-1ing Ludwig with 2 NPC summons and still managed to lose once.

Later I went back and ended up learning the fight pretty well. But not as well as this guy (LobosJR):

My favorite part of that clip is how he is essentially talking trash to the boss in time to the music.

Well, if you ever want co-op help, just ring me!

I should finish that game, but at this point I doubt I'm going to.

All this talk got me to load the game back up and take a couple swings at Defiled Amygdala. Man, the attempts take so long, and your health is so low. I think my better attempt was at least fifteen minutes, and I only got hit by the one attack that killed me.

That’s definitely a patience fight. Sometimes after a jump you just have to reposition rather than do anything else.

Spoiler:

I assume you know the trick that you are always safe after a jump simply standing still until the jump is over

I don't attack after a jump, using my current strategy. I only attack his arms after an attack. It's a semi-safe but tediously slow strat, and as you know, reduced health means you can be one-shotted at any time.

Might watch some videos later.

I found it easier and safer to go for the back legs.

I'd clearly erased that fight from my memory. Didn't recall it at all until I saw that.

OK, so I watched a video where the player triggered jumps from Amy pretty much on-demand by standing at the end of his tail. Then he'd charge attack the head. Tried that several times one night this weekend, no joy.

Loaded it up tonight, bam! Got him on the first try! Onward!

Dudes on the subreddit are trying to hold a PVP event next weekend. If my life has normalized by then I'll try to join:

The sky and the cosmos are one.

Seamless.

Apparently Return to Yharnam starts March 10. Maybe I'll try and finish off platinum.

I'd jump on that, but Nioh 2 drops March 13th, and I'm knee deep in my Dark Souls 3 re-run, so...

Play through at your own pace, as long as you're done in two weeks. Hah!

But seriously, I think I'm gonna try and do this.

You don't have to finish, it's just a fun way to stir up more online activity.

I've never really played any multiplayer. Maybe I'll give that a go, and I'd like to try the expansion bosses too. You down, @spikeout?

Aw, man, Sony is announcing all kinds of PS4 exclusive titles coming to PC, and I saw new posts here hoping there was similar Bloodborne news that I had somehow missed.

That would be awesome, but I assume it's never happening.

So I kept saying that Bloodborne would be the game that determines if I'm every playing a From game of this style again. Then my buddy resumed nagging me to play it and we'll co-op it, so I started it up last night.

The first thing I thought about this morning was playing it some more. So, I booted it up and continued from where I left off to kind of prove to myself that I could keep playing this game without "requiring" assistance.

Yo man, this game is fun.

That people kept mentioning how much more aggressive a fighting style Bloodborne was compared to the other From games had me feeling like this might be the game for me, and I think that partially holds true. The game certainly is more aggressive, though it doesn't really clearly communicate the ability to regain some health with some aggression after getting hit. In fact, I'm getting the feeling you're supposed to just suss a bunch of stuff out (such as my friend telling me to try swapping blade-modes after an attack. Oooh boy is that gruesomely delightful!). Still, I think the real trick to things is more waiting for the enemy to wind up that big attack so you can shoot 'em in the face, stagger 'em, and visceral them to death.

There's still some From-jank in there, though. Standing six or seven feet from an enemy in a house and for some reason I can't lock on. Granted, he hasn't noticed me either because of the darkness, but it's still weird that I can see the guy clearly and not lock-on, especially when I've been able to lock onto half-obscured foes twice or more feet away later on. I just came off a lower budget JRPG whose lock-on was far more consistent despite having issues of its own (not just requiring line-of-sight on similar elevation, but needing to be within a certain distance).

I know I had another small gripe, but that's really all it is: a small gripe. For the most part, Bloodborne feels like it achieves the best balance of challenge and mechanics of the From games I've played. My buddy helped me out through a good chunk of Yharnam last night, from the Cleric boss to Father Gascoigne, but when I resumed exploring the Cathedral area this morning I only died at one spot, and it was because I really ought to have kited the one fatty away from the other. I tried a sneak attack instead, which roped me into fighting two fatties at once, and while it's not an impossible task it's just better to toss a pebble and bring one closer so you can take 'em one-on-one (and also not aggro the crows). Big dude with a ball and chain? Big dude with an axe? No problem. I'm ready to spawn in Old Yharnam now, as I think I might have missed a pathway down there (I've hit what feel like three dead-ends and don't have whatever emblem is required for the main gate).

That said, I also know my own lack of patience, and I have no doubt I'd find many of the bosses in this game frustrating. That's where co-op comes in, and I'm honestly completely fine with that. I dunno what this game's world or narrative wants to communicate to me, but having a partner there to help me out for the tough bosses just feels like a much better experience than banging my head against the wall.

I don't plan on relying on him for everything, and if I manage to catch up to him I think it would be interesting to sort of "leap frog" each other's progress from one world to the next (he informed me that if you beat a boss in someone else's world, it's not dead in your own). Seems like a good way to obtain materials and such so you can be in a better, stronger position for when you do solo work.

We'll see what happens. I can say for now, though, that Bloodborne has had the best first-impression on me of any From game, and I can understand why many have been wanting a sequel. For now, From has made a game that I like and want to go back and play more of.

Great post, ccesarano!

I kind of feel like a sequel to Bloodborne would lessen it somehow. I want From to keep doing what they're doing, and at most give us a spiritual sequel.

I would absolutely love another horror game in their style. I'd love an even darker fantasy game than the original Dark Souls. Very curious to see what Elden Ring is going to be; so far I'm thinking straight fantasy.
