Not the most prolific director, but when your first film out of school is part of a tide shift like Boyz n the Hood, you don't need to be. I can only speak for one group, but for a lot of white suburban kids, it was an encouragement to care about people and experiences we probably wouldn't have been exposed to otherwise. And he had a strong enough command of pulp sensibilities when called for.
Daaaaaayum, I had no idea he was that young when he made Boyz.

I liked the movie, it just had the feel of trying to say too much. But maybe that's how it works so well. Higher Learning felt the same way, but it did drive one point home I always remember: Nazis are cowards and irrational and deserve to be punched out.
