Rebel Galaxy Outlaw - Privateering-All

It's sublime with a controller, and the developer-intended way to play it.

More questions:

1. Is it open world style? Or are there mission hubs and you only go on missions?
2. If 1) is true, is the world alive as you fly through it? As in, other ships and events going on that you can check out?

1. It's open world style, like Privateer or Freelancer, in which systems are completely open, and you can fly around to find stuff to do, like distress signals and such, or you can go to stations/plants to get missions.
2. Yeah, the world is alive. Your autopilot will be interrupted by battles, distress calls, other ships and so on. There's a ton going on at any one time, it feels like.

Is there any character progression or is it like OG Rogue Galaxy?

The progression is, so far, what you can afford and what you can handle as your skill increases. As you upgrade your ship, or get specific ships, the game knows what'll be a challenge and a cakewalk for you, and will label missions accordingly. You'll also run into tougher enemies as you go -- not just in tougher ships but also tougher AI -- so your hopefully increased skill and better equipment will help you better handle them.

But no, there's no, like, RPG system. It's far more organic than that.

So tomorrow I'm taking the day off from work because my work situation has burned me out something bad, and I need to recoup a bit. What am I gonna spend nearly all day doing? Playing Rebel Galaxy Outlaw of course. All those upgrades for my beloved Durston aren't gonna buy themselves.

Sorry, I realized after I wrote this that it could sound like I'm trying to rub it in or something that I have access to this game before other folks. I'm really not, I'm just super excited and wanted to share my excitement.

... and gloat.

You should totally stream all day. Don't even need commentary! I guess maybe you don't have permission to do that yet, but it would be cool.

I was very clearly told no recording of any kind at the moment.

How big is the biggest ship you can fly if compared to Elite ships?

I'd say the closest approximation is the Type 7. At least right now. Currently there are maybe six ships you can fly in the game, but they're planning more variations of these ships, apparently, so I don't know the final tally.

Gotcha. I really enjoyed flying the really huge ships in Rebel Galaxy, but it might be weird flying those with a HOTAS.

I didn't read it that way at all, FWIW.

Yeah, this'll be a far more HOTAS-friendly game.

Thanks man!

So friends, as you know, I love shooting down ejected pilots. Due to their hilarious screams, you see.

Someone asked about this on another forum, so I decided to try it. Today, rather than shooting down an ejected pilot, I ran into them.

Yes, I was treated to the same wonderful scream, but to add icing to the cake, I also got a lovely red mist right in front of the windshield.

Glorious. Just. Glorious.

That's a commitment to janky simulation!

Passed 30 hours today y’all. Switched to a Coyote fighter, which is a killing machine. Still not bored, like, at all. I mean, I played for maybe 3-4 hours straight today. First, these days I barely stick with most games longer than 5-10 hours. Second, I can usually only do 1-2 hours in a session before I need a break.

This is something special y’all.

Release date?

Don't know.

You would think it would be soon though...
They planned for last December and then pushed it to first quarter 2019.
So it should be soon *fingers crossed*

Well it's amazingly playable and there's tons of stuff to do, but I'm not sure everything is in there yet.

Well then we are talking months rather than within a couple weeks then...

Sigh, what do you want me to tell you? I don't know what has yet to be added. If they released it TODAY, it'd be freaking awesome and GOTY contender, but they're not done, and I don't know when they will be. If it's months, it'll be worth it, but I can't say one way or another.

Also, let's try to, if we can, keep epic vs steam sh*t out of this thread, if possible. If you really want to wait a year until it's on Steam, fine, but we don't need to drag what's become a toxic topic in here. Let's just try to focus on the game itself please.

Without getting into the debate (I personally use Epic and Steam both right now and don't care), it might be good to note the actual terms of any deals if you update the first post into a summary post. I wasn't even aware there was a deal until I'd read this. It looks like a 12 month exclusive to the Epic store.

It was probably good to note that for anyone not familiar with your body of work. For those of us that are, we get that you're REALLY ENTHUSIASTIC about space games.

I was going to ask about VR support. It doesn't look like they plan on adding any.

Yeah, no VR. Here's Travis on Qt3 explaining why:

Makes me hurl :/ Also so many of the game modes and elements don’t lend themselves (pool, conversations, pausing, hands in cockpits, 3rd person views, 3rd person on stations, the parts of the interior sets that aren’t built outside field of view/behind )
Basically it would have to be a different game.

I'm a guaranteed sale, but how pause-friendly is this game? Does the mission structure allow for ending a game session abruptly without losing tons of progress? Could you have a productive/fun session if you know you've only got 10-15 minutes before the hellions wake up? Basically how quickly can you go from Desktop to kicking ass/getting ass kicked and strutting/limping back to base in a productive manner for a random session?

Thanks!

You can pause at any time, and also save and quit at any time. It's very good at valuing your time.

Yeah it seems like any time you open up the menu to change the radio station, change power to engines/shields, or in that photo mode, it pauses the game. At least that is what I gleam from the gameplay streams.

To clarify:

When you bring up the radial command menu -- which allows you to change radio stations, select the closest station, scan the area and so on, it slows down the game significantly but doesn't pause it.

When you enter the system map, or the tactical targeting map, I don't THINK it's 100% paused either, but again, going very slow. This one I'm not 100% on since I can't see the cockpit, but in the targeting map, things move real slowly I think. I'll try to confirm this next time I play.

When you bring up your PDA, which lets you look at your cargo, damage, change settings, exit to the main menu (which saves your game at any time) and so on, THEN the game is paused.

I hope this helps.

Veloxi, do ships have different cockpit types? The space garbage truck in the stream I watched seemed reeeeeally claustrophobic and cramped. Hoping there are some wide-viewing ships (without having to go to 3rd person)

All ships have different, varied and pretty detailed cockpits. I've flown four ships so far, and while they all display the same info, they all display it in different places and with different colors and icons. It's really great.

Plus you can buy flair for your cockpits.
