2019 - 12 Month Pile Program

Hollow Knight makes it hard to jump back in. Partly because it doesn't want to tell you where to go and it's map system.

On the other hand, starting the game over goes a lot faster than starting it for the first time. I gave up on the game last year after about eight hours of play; I restarted the game recently and got to the same point in about two hours.

Pretty good month overall, I'd say. I don't expect April to be as good though, since both ToCS and BotW will take quite a while to beat. I might try to squeeze in a shorter game in there just for the heck of it. Looking at my list of "priority games", it looks like either Child of Light or Ys II would fit that bill. We'll see.

Well... I guess it wasn't a total loss. March report.

  • Prey (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) - Still good. Just need to spend more time with it.
  • Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) - I started this up twice and fell asleep in bed with my laptop, soooooo... need to get back to it.

Backloggery is at 8. Not great. Third funeral in the family, a little closer to home, and it's been rough. But I'm starting to play more games. I want to finish Prey, play Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, there's so much I want to do. Camp NaNoWriMo in April might take up some time, though. I'm taking a week off at the end of April, and though I'll be away from my rig, I'll hopefully be able to play a few lighter games.

Honestly, I hardly got any videogame time in this month. First, I was engrossed in an art project and rewatching Game of Thrones before the final season. Now I'm trying to get into the house buying market with my lease coming up. It's been pretty stressful to say the least. If I do buy a house, that will at least be better for my pile since I won't be spending money on extra stuff for a while. I beat the 5th palace in Persona 5 so with any luck I'll finish it in the next couple months.

I finished God of War and Quarantine Circular in March. It was nice to get one of those bigger games off the list finally.

The remainder:
PC

  • American Truck Simulator
  • Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition
  • Else Heart.Break()
  • King's Bounty: Crossworlds
  • King's Bounty: The Legend
  • KOTOR II
  • Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII
  • Observer
  • Pillars of Eternity
  • Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition
  • Tyranny
  • Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War II: Retribution
  • Warhammer 40K: Space Marine
  • Watch Dogs 2
  • Yakuza 0

PS4

  • Assassin's Creed Odyssey
  • Red Dead Redemption 2
  • Yakuza Kiwami

I subscribed to Playstation Now, which has me grazing through their selection looking for new things to try. I latched onto Ni No Kuni yesterday, so that might hold my interest for a while. At the same time, I've enjoyed playing shorter games recently, so perhaps I'll try to focus a few of those down on my backlog this month?

In March, I finished:

  • Picross e
  • Shadow of the Colossus (2018)
  • Poochy and Yoshi's Woolly World
  • Below
  • Dark Souls Remastered

I also dropped a lot of games, as I do every year around this time.

Spoiler:

IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/null.gif) Greed Corp - bounced off this one super hard. I love a good puzzle, but this one just didn't seem fun. When I feel like I play the game's very first level fairly intelligently, but still lose, I know I'm in for a slog. And here, it wasn't a slog I was at all motivated to continue.
Sold - Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords - Started this multiple times over the past 10 years, and bounced off it hard each time. Finally, I realized I just need to give it up. I kept coming back to it because I like Match 3 games! But, I don't enjoy these games when played against an AI that seemingly has perfect vision for its moves.
Sold - Final Fantasy X-2 - I keep telling myself I will play this, and it keeps losing out to other JRPGs. My primary reason for wanting to play this is that I love FF X, but let's be honest, at this point if I want to play X-2, I'll buy it's HD remastered version during a sale.
Sold - Etrian Odyssey II - I'm still planning to get back to Etrian Odyssey IV, but I can't see myself tackling an older, grindier version of the same (type of) game with fewer of the quality of life improvements that have come with the series.

2019 Progress: 23 (10 finished + 21 dropped - 8 added)

Current backlog state:
114IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) / 41IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)

Last Month's Goals: Not as much progress as in Jan. and Feb.

Spoiler:

Persona 5 (PS4): Finish Palace 5 and Palace 6 - One out of two isn't bad, considering the other huge games I played
Spider-Man: campaign 50% done, all backpacks collected, all landmarks photographed, all crime stopped, all Fisk hideouts cleared - no on the last two, but I also cleared all pigeons and all Black Cat sites.
Finish two short games - Made it through The Swapper, but stalled on Broken Sword
Null or sell two more games - Actually dropped four

I'm not going to set April goals for myself. I'm playing a bunch of huge, over-long games right now, so I'll be happy just to keep progress going.

If you finish a game but can't mark it on Backloggery, did it even really happen at all?!?

Sounds like it is down for a while.

Judging by the Twitter account, it’s been an uphill battle. But he’ll get there.

I saw the posts in this thread and had to double-check the date.

EDIT: Wrong thread. Nothing to see here. Move along. hehehehe

So I played a lot this month without actually finishing anything. Let's see if I can somewhat organize this rambling.

Multiplayer Shenanigans
I'm pretty sure I've said it before, but I think I'm ready to be done with Destiny for the time being. A new event landed last Tuesday, and while I played it with my buddy Steve for a while, all interest in pursuing it further was crushed when I teamed up with my pal Nolan to revisit Resident Evil 5. It felt fresh playing a game where you had greater agency over your weapon upgrades and had a co-op experience focused purely on that: the co-op experience. We had a lot of great moments and jokes that led to laughter. Neither one of us cared one bit about the story – cripes, it's even worse than I remembered it being – but we were able to take the opportunity to laugh at it. We probably would have gone back through and replayed it on Veteran some more if I didn't have to swap discs out to play other stuff, and so we've moved onto Resident Evil 6. Even with that game's issues, I'd rather keep playing it than do more of the same in Destiny yet again.

I suppose it's a matter of comfort. For my buddy Steve, Destiny is a reliable way of just getting some game time in. Remote in on his Vita while his kids are trying to go to sleep, or play it for a bit and be more prepared to quit as soon as his wife is home from work. It's not as demanding as a single player story-heavy game, or a bloody title of some sort that he's got to be careful with in front of his kids or his wife won't like to watch. It's easy for him to get into. However, I am not as in need of that sort of "just chill and destress" game.

And even if I was, I probably would have preferred Final Fantasy XIV anyway. On console, the combat was reminiscent of Dragon Age: Origins, which I was not unfond of. Go someplace, get some quests, kill some critters, click some buttons, voila, experience and boosted levels. It was a perfectly chill game that I could relax into, until the game told me about dungeons. Even with more of an open mind, that chill factor goes away once you have to team up with other people. Do I have to hook up my headset? Do I really want to speak with strangers? What will these people be like? Will they already be in their own party? What about my friends? I have friends playing FFXIV, right? Crap, they're all on different servers. Most of them are on PC. I don't have a place to set up a Discord machine in my bedroom. Why can't I just use the PlayStation party system? Why is this so troublesome? Screw it, Steve's on and playing Destiny, I'ma send him a party invite and swap over.

The reality of the situation is that it's no big deal. Load Discord on the phone, contact some of my friends, and then go... even though that had added elements of not knowing when those friends would be available. I guess the downside to playing with the same two guys on Destiny for years is that you develop the same habits for signing onto your PS4. You know roughly when everyone else is gonna be available, so you don't have to really plan like you do with new people. Even then, I've been told repeatedly that the FFXIV community is very friendly, but... I can't do it. I cannot get over whatever anxiety cripples me regarding online interactions in ways I've never felt with physical.

Then again, if I go to the mall alone, I don't just suddenly approach someone and say "Hello, I'm embarking on a level 30 store raid of the GameStop. Would you like to join me?" Or hold up a sign saying "LFG: Lv. 20 Assault on the Cinnabon". Though that latter one could actually work out surprisingly well under the right circumstances...

Regardless, my subscription to FFXIV lapsed, but I'm not against coming back. It's just going to effectively take a comfortable, reliable group on PS4 for me to be willing to jump back in. Until then, I'm enjoying my return to more classic co-op with my pal Nolan, and really wishing we could go back to when that was the norm instead of looter shooters.

Speaking of Resident Evil
While playing RE5, my buddy and I got nostalgic for how well designed RE4 is, especially in comparison. While playing Leon's campaign in RE6, we were getting nostalgic for RE5. This franchise has had such a weird trajectory, where RE5 was clearly attempting to turn a lot of RE4's new and unique concepts and features into the new standard. Where RE2 was viewed positively by fans for going bigger than its predecessor, RE5 was received the opposite (except probably in terms of sales). The greatest shame is, perhaps, that the large and open spaces still weren't as well designed as RE4, which no doubt could have accommodated co-op without much adjustment. A real shame, but in the end we still enjoyed ourselves.

RE6 is proof that 600 people does not guarantee a good game. It may guarantee a lot of polish in other spaces, such as all the ways in which the characters physically interact with the environment. However, each of those interactions interferes with your ability to play the game. No one wants to trip over zombies. No one wants to stagger when the plane hits turbulence. Everyone wants the melee system to behave consistently and not have button prompts appear and then vanish.

We're gonna start Redfield's campaign today, which I remember being the most fond of. Leon's is widely accepted as the worst campaign and I can very much see why. Especially since the story is just plain stupid rather than being so outrageously stupid it's funny. That's gonna come over time. But RE6 feels like the greatest scale of overcompensation I've ever played this side of Duke Nukem Forever. Was Capcom competing with Call of Duty? Uncharted? Their own live-action film adaptations? All of the above? Regardless, despite being their best selling game to that point (if records we found are accurate), it cost way too much to be worth the effort. Despite those same numbers, I have a feeling critics and players alike were brutal enough with their feedback that we're now sitting at a good spot with the series. RE2 is, without a doubt, the best RE game since RE4, and I look forward to replaying it later this year.

Switching It Up
So I'm not buying any new Switch games until I have completed Final Fantasy IX, Caligula Effect: Overdose, and the next two Phoenix Wright games. I've already made FF9 my clear goal as I'm looking to finish recording the game footage as soon as possible. Were it not for passing a kidney stone on Wednesday, the distraction of its after-effects since then, and the added benefit of work picking up towards the end of the month/start of the next, I'd have likely gotten closer to beating it already. Sadly, I probably have at least a week left of playing to do.

Once I'm done that, I'll try and tackle Caligula Effect: Overdose more earnestly. I've been having a good enough time with it, but its story is far better than its design. Oddly enough, I'm evidently at the best dungeon right now, and I can already understand why. It has a bit of an inventive gimmick. Unfortunately, I'm learning the hard way that you need to fight a decent amount if you wish to keep in level in Hard mode. I've seen plenty of folks say the combat was pretty bland after playing on Normal, so I still believe I made the right choice. Nevertheless, I feel like this is going to be one of those quirky games that I love but have trouble recommending.

As for Phoenix Wright, well, I got the Ace Attorney trilogy and fell in love with the first game all over again. What's more, nearly everyone in my family insisted I keep playing when they saw me playing on the living room television. I'd reach a natural stopping point, save, and shut down, and they'd ask "Wait, so you're done? You're not gonna keep going?" So, uh, that stole more of my time than I expected the week in which I played it...

Right now, I'm not really looking to get anything for Switch in May and June. I have plenty of time to clear the list. The problem is, all the Dragon's Dogma chatter has me wanting to grab that, I also want FFXII, as well as FFX, and then there's the other RE re-releases... so I might just have to slate some games for inevitable sales.

Speaking of re-releases.

Blasts From the Past
I used to only list games that were "pile games" rather than tracking everything I played, but as of late I've really, really been wanting to just revisit older stuff. In some cases I like to replay it on Hard, such as my attempt with Nier: Automata. In other cases I just want to experience it again. Sometimes I think about the end of the year, and tallying 10 new games up for the GotY calculations, and then getting worried that I won't have enough new titles. At least, that used to be how I felt. Now... I mean, I definitely look forward to that stuff, but instead I largely just don't care. I want to go back and experience these games that I loved and get more time with them.

I'm wondering if this is in part a result of choosing to be more selective with what I buy. I'm not purchasing Rage 2 in May, though I have some temptation. It looks fun in terms of combat, but I don't want to waste that time with an open-world I may not like. I know I like FFXV's open-world, so why not spend more time there? Why not see how the patches and updates have changed it?

As a result, I definitely think my enjoyment of this hobby has been the best it's ever been in a long time. Playing Sekiro and arguing with the current conversation while also trying to compensate for whatever gamer cred I was hoping for... that was the low-point for me in terms of gaming in 2019. It stinks that I feel like I'm mostly talking to myself (and a massive novel like this surely doesn't help), but actually playing games in 2019 has, thus far, been a great time for me.

I'll be getting A Plague Tale: Innocence and Judgment on PS4 in May and June, respectively, but otherwise I'm just going to keep enjoying these older loves until the inevitable onslaught of July hits... which, now that I look at it, only seems to be Fire Emblem: Three Houses. So I'm good! For now, I'm good. Though who knows what other dates E3 shall reveal.

Gravity Rush 2 (PS4)
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch)

I was addicted to Zelda for a day or two, but I have not touched it in three weeks. Part of it is because I'm trying to stay ahead in Trails of Cold Steel, and also the fact that I find the weapon degradation kinda kills the fun. I will restart at some point in the future, when I actually have time I can devote to it.

Trails of Cold Steel has been super interesting, albeit slow, so far (I'm 45 hours in, I think, with about 35 to go), and I like it a lot.

In the mean time, there's Gravity Rush 2. I'm only about five hours in, and I absolutely love it so far. It looks great, I like the art style, I like flying around. The music is pretty good too. I like that I can play it for short periods of time. I like just exploring to find powerups. I got the platinum trophy for the first game, and if the game is this good throughout, I probably will get it for this one too.

The play for May is to beat Trails of Cold Steel. However, since I might have to move to another province for a new job, so that might throw off my schedule quite a bit. Luckily, Cold Steel is portable.

I'm pretty wishy washy lately.

Only one backlog game completed this month, but it was a doozy: Assassin's Creed Odyssey. I'm taking a break now and will come back to complete the DLC later, maybe once the last set of season pass content is released.

Here's what's left:
PC

  • American Truck Simulator
  • Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition
  • Else Heart.Break()
  • King's Bounty: Crossworlds

PS4

  • Red Dead Redemption 2

I'm hoping to finish Red Dead 2 in the next couple weeks, then I might try to tackle some one or two of the white whales that have been languishing on my list for a while. Draugen is coming out in May, so that'll take some time away from the backlog, though.

3 of the games I finished this month was also bought in April, two even released this month. Not exactly pile games. At least I finished one that has been on my pile list for half a decade.

Finished:
Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales
The House in Fata Morgana
Enslaved: Odyssey to the West - take that pile!
Ni No Kuni 2

Playstation VR everything basically

Well..... basically I got PS VR, aaaand blew up my pile. The good news is alot of these VR games are fairly short, so I should be able to work through them this coming month

Plans for next month is to finish some of the VR games I got this past week, they are fairly short so hopefully most of these could be done in couple nights each. I also want to settle on one longer game to finish, I started way to many in the past months and I want to see some of them through to the end by the end of the year.

Let's start fresh for quarter 2.

April report.

It's a short one...

Purchased
The Division 2.

Played
The Division 2

Plan to play in May.
The Division 2.

Again this month apart from games with the boy I've spent very little time playing video games this past month. Pretty much nothing up until the last week in fact, putting say five hours total into newly purchased Division 2.

I specify video games because as in March I've been playing more board games again this last month, in a game group, with family and also solo. I've started down the print and play rabbit hole too, crafting mostly indie designers interesting games to play, along with a few established games that also had a PnP version available. I'm finding the crafting of the games a very chill and satisfying way to spend my spare time.

Anyhow, more Division 2 and more games of the table top variety in May I think.

Not my best month, but here goes for the April report.

Added:
None! Yay me!

Finished:

  • Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) - Still on hold.

Remaining games: 53 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) (52 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif))
Progress (Games): 9 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) + 2 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/null.gif) - 8 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif) = 3
Est. remaining hours: 663 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) (657 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif))
Progress (Est. total hours): 79 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) + 20 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/null.gif) + 1 played IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) - 78 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif) = 22

Backloggery is at 10. At least I got Prey done. I spent a lot of free time on Camp NaNoWriMo (which did take time away from gaming, obviously, but I reached my 10k goal and that's a bit of a personal victory). I'm on vacation until Monday, so I do plan to squeeze a few smaller games in. So small progress, but progress nonetheless.

So much for reducing my PS4 backlog. I traded in my PS4 for a PS4 Pro and so I found myself picking up more games, but I'm happy with the cheap price I paid for all of them. Did some dabbling, but most of my time was spent in Spider-Man, FFXIV and Cold Steel. For some reason, I decided to hookup my 360 and finally start Lost Odyssey toward the end of the month.

Finished in April:

  • Picross e2
  • Resident Evil 2 (2019)
  • Hollow Knight
  • Sundered: Eldritch Edition
  • Glass Masquerade

My hope for May is to finish Dark Souls 2 and hopefully Dragon's Dogma. It would also be great to maybe play a Game Pass game or two before getting sucked into the next Souls game on my list.

April report.

Slow month of April for me.

Nothing! Over 3 months with no purchases!

Played:
Shadow of the Tomb Raider (PS4)
Onrush

I needed a shorter non-RPG to play after finishing up Rainbow Skies and Kingdom Hearts recently. The choice was between Tomb Raider and God of War...and I think that I chose poorly. So far, this isn't a bad game but it isn't very good either. Can't tell what is missing but it is just blah. Hoping that it improves soon. I'm behind but will start Trails of Cold Steel and try to catch up with the JRPG club.

I have another week to look at the Golden Week sale on PSN but nothing on my radar screen for purchases.

Oh yeah, I finished Blackwell Legacy in April, thanks for the reminder Steinkrug! I hadn’t counted it because it’s a replay.
