It's ok, they got a sugar free Coke ;)

As a fat guy, this take gets old, mostly because it is clueless.

I drink diet sodas. Once I transitioned to diet, I cannot stomach a full syrupy soda anymore. I don't drink any non-diet soda, not because of calories at this point, but, because it tastes better to me. Same goes for when I use soda as mixer. Diet tastes better to me because that is what I am used to.

But fat folks, we try dieting off and on all the time. So many of us have switched to diet drinks, even when we are not dieting. That leaves us to these kinds of funny jabs that really aren't that all funny, because it is even more depressing to explain it to someone. And really, just being overweight and drinking a diet soda seems to be an opening for this crack.

I drink diet too and agree with you about the taste of the non-diet drinks. Even more so I can tell the difference between the real sugar versions and the corn syrup versions now. It took me a long time to find a diet soda I didn't hate at first. Most of my old favorites just didn't taste right so I had to look for something new. Diet Coke though still tastes horrible unless it is one of the flavored varieties (the Ginger Lime one is my favorite).

Yeah I restricted myself just to root beer and still have to be careful to look at the ingredients. Anything corn syrup is ignored. If not for the taste but for the fact that means it was made as cheap as possible. Positive side it has drastically cut down on my soda intake.

What I've been switching to to kick the soda habit is sparkling water. I still get that carbonated feel, but without the sugar. Was bummed that Schweppes seems to have stopped selling. seems like what I like ends up sign out. I used to go with Mendota springs, but I never see it anymore, either.

The one thing to watch with sparkling water is sodium, though. I try to stick with zero sodium versions. Lately I've been taking the store brand, because it is a better deal, and it is zero sodium.

I actually like Diet Coke. I'm not much into flavors of soda, it's pretty much cola or Dr. Pepper.

I hated diet drinks when I first tried them, but figured, correctly, that I would get used to them to the point they taste normal, and regular soda tastes weird. I'm sure I could switch back, but I don't think regular soda is the thing I need to work at to get back in my life.

I found myself not craving the sweetness or the carbonation, but just the convinience of having a distinct container, especially at home. I've moved to green teas and waters. It's not really great recycling-wise but it helped me cut soda from my diet.

That said, I'll now get a chocolate malt with my burger and fries instead of a Dr. Pepper, so I'm not really gaining that much.

Hell, I never touch diet sodas and I can tell the difference there. The various stabilizers they use to keep the high fructose corn syrup mixed in with the rest of the beverage leave an unpleasant aftertaste. The real-sugar sodas don't have that.

I could never stomach the diet sodas. I taste the chemicals there even more that I do with the HFCS-sweetened ones. When I cut back on sodas I ended up just making ice water my default beverage.

One thing I have learned by cutting back: when I only have one soda per week that one soda tastes amazing. If I have them all the time then my system becomes numb to the sweetness and it's all just... bleh.

to stay way off topic, asside from schweppes, what is your preferred soda water? Do you go for the flavored ones like LeCroix or Bubly? Switching from soft drinks to angry waters is something I've considered but lacroix has a bit of an aftertaste im not fond of.

Hannah Montana's cheevs are a bit easier.

I'm cutting caffeine out completely, so on the soda front, I'm trying to switch from Coke to Sprite or root beer. Seltzer is wonderful too, though.

Some Root Beers like Barqs do have caffeine, so make sure to read the label before purchasing/consuming if you are trying to avoid caffeine.

It is known, but the reminder is still useful. Even there, it varies - the freestyle Coke machine Barqs does not have caffeine.

Any of you cutting out caffeine have my sincere admiration. With three kids and a wife that gets up at 5:30 to go to work (meaning I get up at the same time to make her lunch), the thought of not having my coffee in the morning gives me chills. And it would, perhaps, lead to bad things happening to other people, too. So thanks, caffeine, for keeping other people alive!

In case people are unaware, I can't recommend the Wisp enough. Best $20 I ever spent.

How is the wisp on dog hair on a couch? We have huskies and currently we vacuum the couch. Huskies shed in clumps and their hair is wiry and sticks to everything.

Looks like the miniWISP has got you covered.

Great for pet owners. We purchased two of these -- one for cleaning up the cat's litter box, the other for getting cat and dog hair off couches and chairs. It's much better than a vacuum at getting up pet hair -- very important at our house. Bristles are designed to get it all and it fits nicely in a pan with teeth for cleaning the brush. Well designed.

LeCroix was one I started drinking, but it does have a slight after taste. I stopped noticing it after not too long. I have not tried Bubly, yet.

Maybe I will compare the sodium free drinks to the ones with sodium. Maybe the salt helps the flavor.

By far, Mendota Springs was my favorite. It still seems to exist, but I don't see it in stores anymore.

I may just stick with the store brands and get used ti it. It cheaper, sodium free, and comes in the long 12 packs that I prefer.

Some I don't like because they come in smaller cans, or, like LeCroix, come in 8 packs instead of 12. The store brand is cheaper, and has 4 extra cans.

I'm not close to giving up caffeine yet. Heck, I just bought a new coffeemaker that does both full pots and k-cups. too many times I don't mess with making coffee in the morning becasueof time and hassle. I reach for a Pepsi Max instead, because those things make Moutain Dew seem like a sleeping pill, and tastes good (once you get used to it!) I'm hoping that the k-pods may encourage to grab a coffee on the way out instead of a soda.

Also, it's part of a commitment to really, just stop with the Starbucks. The convenience of tasty caffeine at a drive thru is just way too expensive. And yeah, we have better coffee shops, but Starbucks gets the nod when we are headed somewhere and need to coffee, especially since the closest highway entrance has a Starbucks right there.

But I see a day when I may try to cut caffeine out. But today is not that day.

I guess Friday is fine...

I quit sugar drinks a long time back with the wife and years after that then diet. Mostly just coffee and water for a while. Then we started down the sparking water lane, that's nice to have, but the thing that would take it all entirely in my book is kombucha. I love the lemon, raspberry, and ginger flavors. Get a beer esk taste with the ability to day drink and not take a nap or get fired.
