Playstation 4 Games Catch-All

I have mixed feelings about Ratchet & Clank. I'd never played the prior games in the franchise and therefore have no room to be offended, like I found some fans of the franchise to be. However, between it and the film, it feels like this really weird cynical move to try and reinvent the series by... making something that feels half-hearted. I liked it, particularly when I stopped playing it like a shooter, but I kind of forget I ever played it until someone reminds me the game exists.

To that end, it always feels like this half-complete thing, clearly a movie tie-in rather than a standalone. How the two feed off each other without actually complementing one another is... strange.

Pretty much the only reason I can think to put it on a list of must-haves is "What else are you gonna get your kids?" Given that I enjoyed Ratchet & Clank more than my brief time with Knack...

I'm a HUGE fan of the series, but I was kind of disappointed by the reboot. That said, it has the mechanics pretty well down and it's cheap now, so why wouldn't you get it. Especially for kids.

Of course, there are the Lego games and other options for kids if need be.

Edit: Shadow of the Colossus deserves a mention...

I absolutely adore SotC; I've played it many, many times, on the PS2, the PS3, and on the PS4 with the remaster. But I was taken aback by the reaction of many people to the stunningly gorgeous PS4 version; those controls have not aged well, and it seems like the majority of people who haven't played it before really find it frustrating and unrewarding. I'm, at best, ambivalent about recommending it to people unless they've previously played it and enjoyed it.

I would agree if I hadn't played the game and had a joyful, hilarious time with it. Putting aside my fondness for the PS2 games, including the original that it often recreates, the PS4 version is still just insanely fun, and a lot of love and expertise went into making a game that most of us didn't know we were craving. It's a great recommend.

The movie, on the other hand, is completely forgettable, and not nearly as witty, clever and entertaining as the games. Such a shame; it really should be a no-brainer to adapt the fun of the series to movie format.

I thought they offered more modern controls for the PS4 remakester?

They do, but it's just a button remapping. It's the way the game controls that left people feeling like they were constantly fighting the game, rather than the Colossi. Some of that's inherent in the game - gripping is the essential metaphor for the game (the whole point of the game is that the protagonist refuses to let go), so removing the necessity of constantly holding on would be wrongheaded.

And lots of people complained about the horse, but having NPCs that behave with their own will is an essential throughline in all of Ueda's games, from Yorda to Agro to Trico. Also, I suspect anyone who complained about Agro has never ridden a horse IRL; they are not four-legged cars.

I really had fun with Ratchet and Clank on ps4, I only played a handful of the older titles and I think this is the most polished and possibly the best way to enter this franchise.

Ten new games on PlayStation Now in February:

Battlefield Hardline (PS3)
Earth Defense Force 4.1 (PS4)
F1 2017 (PS4)
Magicka 2 (PS4)
Metal Gear Solid HD Collection (PS3)
Metro Last Light Redux (PS4)
Mortal Kombat X (PS4)
Need for Speed Rivals (PS3)
Pillars of Eternity (PS4)
Rebel Galaxy (PS4)

This game just caught my eye. I think it looks very interesting!

I think I saw that at PAX East. It was visually interesting, but people were having problems working though the controls in the tutorial level.

Good to know. Hopefully, the developer will put that feedback to good use and fix it before releasing the game.

I saw this trailer this week, looks visually interesting, and the music was good. Not gonna lie though, the fact that EDM is presented as the bad guy was kind of a turn off for me.

Looks real cool, I'll keep an eye on it.

also... this popped into my Youtube feed.

I had the same initial reaction, but if they're sufficiently silly with it (and give EDM its proper musical due), I think I can put my personal feelings aside. I'm watching with tentative interest.

Nevermind, thought this was the console thread, not the games thread.

Wrong thread, Chris has already posted over in the PS4 thread regarding the Wired - PS5 article, my mistake.

Ha! Me too just posted in the wrong thread, dammit!

I still don't think there are two different threads and here we are at the end of the PS4's life...

I only realized there were two Switch threads like a month ago.

That's on me. This was originally the PS+ thread, but that stopped making sense at a certain point, so I tried to transition it to something more relevant, like we have for the Switch.

Considering how often this happens, I'd say the results have been mixed at best

This one was a bit unexpected Slay The Spire releasing for PS4 in May

I was expecting a Switch version first but it seems the PS4 might be getting it first for whatever reason, I'll prob just grab it on PS4 when it comes out then, likely be a little cheaper too.

I will have to look into it, I am more inclined to play something like this on the couch vs PC.

So many people talking about switch. I love my switch an it is great for games that need controllers mobile. However, this one doesn't need controller in anyway. The game itself does not take a lot of horse power to run. I am much more wondering when IOS version. I would love this on Ipad or phone. Touch controls would work fine.

Mobile is in the works too. They're porting the game to everything but have farmed out the ports which is why they've apologized for poor communication related to the ports.

If anybody here reads the amazing Blacksad comic books, you might be interested in the video game version, which apparently comes out in September:

Looks good.

I’ve finally gotten back to Horizon Zero Dawns dlc. Soooo much fun.

I JUST finished that, and you are correct: it was soooo much fun!

It's Golden Week, which means plenty of games you could be playing right now are on sale on the PSN store.

It's a huge list with some gems in there like Nioh, Nier, Nom Nom Galaxy, Overcooked 2, Disgaea 5 and a million Final Fantasy games.
