Umbrella Academy (Spoilers Ahead)

There's a lot of comics from Dark Horse and some of the smaller comic publishing houses that would make great Netflix shows.

I am kinda hoping that is what they are going for! I would like to see a Grendel series.

OMG i want that so bad now!!!!

They could make it where each season follows a story with different director/actors for each one.

Hit and miss for me, but it was an enjoyable ride overall.

Is it just me, or are Vanya's powers ill defined? She seemed to be mostly telekinetic, but then her eyes change, her clothes and violin change colours, she blasts a beam of energy that shatters a moon. Does she have the phoenix force?

From what I recall, it's explained she converts sound to energy, but I'm just not able to reconcile that with what I'm watching.

At the beginning, it's mentioned 40+ children were born. Food for sequels, right?

They're not so much ill-defined as unlimited. Hence her being drugged her entire life to prevent her unlimited powers from Doing Bad Things.

As if the ability to blow the moon to hell with concentrated sound energy isn't enough.

So she needs sound to do whatever she wants? Sooo... If she becomes deaf, back to an ordinary life, right? (Let's be honest, with a family like that, she'll never be ordinary.)

Maybe but it is also possible the sound need only to exist Needing sound and needing to hear sound aren't the same thing.

I thought the Dad just used sound as something for her to focus on, and so focus her powers. Like Dumbo with the magic feather. I never felt like she was dependent on sound to use her powers. Anyone else interpret it like that?

She did use the violin to focus her power but that wasn't the reason the dad gave it to her in the show. She definitely needs sounds. That is why she was put in a soundproof box to hold her. She used the sound from her heart inside her to build up energy to blast the door off.

I did think that at first, but by the end she seemed to depend strongly on real sound.

So... um... how can she blow up the moon, which is in space?

This is a joke, right?

No. SCIENCE, Female DoggoES.

If the writer provides a ridiculous justification for a fantasy power, it should at least be consistent. I have no problem with time travel boy or communicates-with-dead man, because their powers just "are."

Ken. Ken, ken ken.

You're questioning the physics of a show in which a lady can alter reality by lying.

I think that horse left the barn, set fire to it on the way out and then concreted over the pile of ash.

...ok then. She shot a beam of energy using the energy she generated/stored from sound while ON earth into SPACE. She did not, for instance, teleport to the moon only find out there was a vacuum and die.

The real problem is not watching the show first :p

Have to admit, I kind of struggled through this. I enjoyed the bits that were very stylish and the ice cream van. But Klaus is pretty much the only interesting character, in that he is the only one with a proper story arch aside from Vanya. Don't think I will bother with any second series.

My point is not that she'd have to go to the moon, but that sound energy wouldn't go from the earth to the moon.

I'm not questioning the physics of fantasy powers. As I said, I have no problem with reality-warping powers or time travel. I'm annoyed by giving a power a "scientific" basis and then having it do silly things. If someone's power is sound-based, it should behave like sound. Otherwise just don't say it's based on sound, and everything is cool.

I don't think you get to selectively apply scientific rigor here, bud. The show is effectively about magic - every single one of the Academy have powers that don't make a lick of sense. A wizard did all of it.

Is the strong relationship between Vanya's powers and sound given a greater emphasis in the source materials? I really didn't see them as "sound powers" when I was watching. The idea that she generated explosive energy with the sound of her heartbeat is really cool and interesting, but was that explained im the show? Cause I'm wondering how I missed that.

It's probably the same way we can hear Neil Armstrong talking about bein' all up on the moon. He said it in sound form, but it wasn't transmitted to the Earth as such. Her bolts of energy are likely just that, some form of nebulous "energy", powered by the sound around her.

I should just always follow Basil Exposition's advice.

(I apologize if you've seen me post this before. It's one of my favorite movie clips ever.)

Number 5, the 58 year old kid is a phenomenal actor. I am only 2-3 episodes in and he carries the show. He definitely has help with the script he is given and his powers. That kids should get a ton of work.

I totally dig the chimpanzee butler too. Well everyone is really good but I'd have to put the chimp and number 5 at the top. Mary J Blige is, well, awful. And to be honest, she is 2 for 2 in struggling to cross over into acting.

Though she was ok except for when holding her weapons. It was awkward as hell.

Seconded. By the end of the season I had totally bought into him being an adult in a kid’s body. Super impressive.

Re: Vanya - as someone mentioned, she’s powered by sound, she doesn’t focus sound. We can use electricity to create light that gets to the moon; that doesn’t mean we send lightning through space.

I started out feeling like he was obviously a kid, pretending to be an adult, but I completely came around. I fully agree now though.

Klaus is still my favourite though!

I just finished the season, was quite pleased with it. The finale was suitably impressive, and Ellen Page handled her role with aplomb. Those last couple episodes were really fun to watch; they built up to them very well, carefully laid the groundwork for everything that happened.

It was an episode or two after he showed up that I realized that I was totally buying Number Five. In his first episode, he was slightly off, not quite right, but nailed it later. He might be the best version of old-person-in-young-body that I've ever seen. He's completely plausible, and with mimicry skills that sharp, I think he's going to have a long and storied career.

Of course, I also said that about Enver Gyokaj, from Dollhouse, and he's getting steady work, but hasn't been burning up the screen the way I expected. Talent is clearly not enough in that business.

Honestly, I rather liked all the characters, for different reasons. I didn't register anyone as being a clunker or out of place, except maybe the first episode with Number Five.

Glad to hear there will be a Season 2.

I just had an oddball thought: the music in this series is out of place. Most of the music is from the 80s, but these kids weren't even born until 1989, meaning the stuff they imprinted on will mostly be 2000 and later.

For some reason I'd flashed on them dancing to "I Think We're Alone Now" in one of the early episodes (I was a bit earwormed by that, it's been in the back of my head for days), and, in retrospect, I'm not sure they would have started spontaneously bopping about like that. And then I got to thinking about the other tracks, and realized that they're all for us old fogies.

Didn't notice at the time, but it seems all wrong, now.
