Playstation 4 Catch-All

Like both these posts.

Of course this is why I have both systems. I keep the PS4 for the great exclusives (HZD, Persona 5, God of War, Infamous Second Son) but I keep the Xbox One for GamePass (Tomb Raider, Fallout 4, Shadow of Mordor, Just Cause 4, Halo)

I would have a very, very hard time deciding which system to get rid of if I had to.

I’m completely happy with just having a PS4 (and a Mac. Whoo! Mac gaming!) At the moment Sony’s idea of what makes a fun, satisfying game matches mine completely. Just about any game I’d like to play from PC gets brought over to PS4. With their exclusives, if you gave me the option of have their exclusives but no other games or all other games but no Sony exclusives I’d take the exclusives. They’re all spot on for what I want from gaming.

I tend to strategise my game purchases in terms of what I think will end up on PS Plus and I’m right more than I’m wrong. Setting aside that I play multiplayer every week, I only need to get two or more big games I want play a year from PS Plus to be quids in.

I've been fancying trying The Surge so I'm happy to give it a go.

So, two months in, the general take-away here is that we now have tacit confirmation that Sony won't be replacing the free PS3 and Vita games with PS4 games of higher value and/or monthly PSVR support of some kind.

What is value?

Yeah Sony is really trying it's damndest to push me back towards Microsoft next gen. The plus offerings haven't been great lately not to mention (my own fault) I've owned most of the games they have on offer. MS on the other hand is offering these fantastic games every month not to mention the games with gold and backwards compatibility is knocking it out of the park.

I think that is matter of personal tastes, first four months this year Sonys offerings lined up with my tastes way more then microsofts.
Notable games for ME this year so far have been, Steep, For Honor, Hitman, The Witness and The Surge. I might even try out Conan. For 45 bucks a year PS plus has been offering a good variety of titles that I would normally wouldnt buy.

Baby, don't hurt me no more.

I'm the opposite. I quite enjoyed the Shadow of the Colossus remake, but otherwise it's been a long time since I felt really drawn to a Sony first-party game, and nothing in their upcoming lineup looks remotely interesting.

There are some Japanese games that are only available on the PS4, so I'm happy to keep my hardware around, but the games coming from Sony itself don't add much to the platform for me.

Yeah, I was trolling just a tad, but this conversation about value worth is so completely subjective. Folks were complaining there wasn't enough AAA games being offered with PS+ this gen, and now that we are consistently getting more of those, they aren't "valuable" enough.

It's Especially ridiculous when people who complain don't have PS3 or Vita. You weren't getting value out of those games anyways.

1.) Many of us, myself included, have any combination of PS3, PS4, and Vita devices.

2.) Value is actually both subjective and objective. Subjective in that you and I may not agree with what constitutes a good or a bad game - although I will offer the average community review score of a PS Plus game in 2018 was 70% - not bad, but not great. Objective in that Sony and the publishers have placed a numeric cost on their games.

https://www.playstationlifestyle.net...

In 2018, the average monthly, objective value of the included PS Plus games was ~$125 per month. March's PS4 games are normally priced at $40 each ($80 total) and April's are priced $50 each ($100). Numerically, does a $24-45 per month drop seem reasonable to you? How many people actually have all three systems is completely immaterial. Granted, the normal price of those games far exceeds the cost of the service itself, but all the customers made their purchases with an expectation of what that service would include and Sony changed it without even attempting to match/replace the known numerical value or offer refunds for people who don't even have PS4s.

Your scenario is like an ISP charging all customers annual, pre-paid fees for a universal 100Mbps connection, knowing some customers modems are only capable of 20Mbps, and then months down the road discontinuing support of all modems 20Mbps and below. Maybe, for the sake of the argument, that same service allowed you to run multiple modems. Maybe some people had a 20Mbps modem that they use for guest traffic, general internet traffic, etc. to run on and used a second, dedicated 100Mbps modem for high-speed gaming and video streaming.

All multi-modem and 20Mbps services are now discontinued. Said ISP refrains from offering modem upgrades and/or refunds.

You only have a single 100Mbps modem, so it's no big deal, right?

All I know is Conan has a dong slider and a secret menu to skip leveling up to 60 for cheevs. That's a bargain at twice the price.

Had to

No, my scenario is more like you're paying for 100Mbps, but your modem only allows 60mbps, and then the ISP downgrades to 80mbps. You're still only using what you already were using in the first place. Folks are bemoaning the loss of something they never took advantage of or had the capacity to use anyways. Most people are paying for PS+ for online play, the games are a bonus. Same with Xbox Live. You can still play games without PS+. Your analogy would be better suited for the change in PS+ from last gen to this one. Also, I would switch ISPs, or in this case move to Gamepass on Xbox.

Never had a Vita and now that my daughter has upgraded to Xbone and I've been running PS4 for several years, I'm not real worried about the loss of PS3 and Vita. I was just quietly hoping we would start to see a surge in PSVR games.

On the rare occasions they include a game I actually care about and/or enjoy, the freebies helped to take a little of the sting out of paying an additional service fee for games I already paid full price for i.e., Destiny 1/2, Division 1/2, and possibly Anthem, if BioWare/EA ever decide to get their sh*t together.

I mean, you yourself said you weren't getting any value out of it for the most part, so it's not like you lost anything valuable anyways.

A loss of $40 in "value" (and lets be honest, the value is calculated using the full price at release, not current price of the games, which can often be found for much cheaper elsewhere) is still going to be relative. $40 for me might be pocket change, but could be a week's worth of lunch to someone else.

I have more games in my library that I'm interested in from PS+ than I have time to play, so the loss of some shovel ware cross play Vita games is almost a blessing in disguise for me.

Rhetorically: Again, what is value?

Speaking of value, the following were added to PlayStation Now for April:

  • Bang Bang Racing (PS3)
  • Clouds & Sheep 2 (PS4)
  • DiRT 4 (PS4)
  • Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (PS4)
  • Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (PS4)
  • Shadow Complex Remastered (PS4)
  • Star Wars: Bounty Hunter (PS2)
  • Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter (PS2)
  • Star Wars: Racer Revenge (PS2)

What's it going to take to make this argument about value go on for 15 pages, Certis locked the Epic game store thread and I am bored.

We could start sniping each other's mothers instead of using math and logic.

Ha! My mom's a mathematician! Tremble before my i-frames!

It was a rhetorical question that didn't really need an answer in the first place. These arguments against it come up every month for the past several years and they always come across as very tone deaf to the subjectivity of the value worth of the service.

Anyways, sorry for the derail, please resume your regularly scheduled discussion of good headphone recommendations.

I get where you're coming from. "Value" really comes down to what's interesting to you personally. I've been pretty happy with the last couple months of PS+ games and feel like there's been an uptick in the quality of the freebies.

Meanwhile, they could add every PS VR game for free tomorrow, including both of the good ones*, and it wouldn't add value for me. At least the Vita games were usually cross-buy.

* Calm down! This is an exaggeration for comedic purposes. There probably aren't even two good PS VR games.

You better hope Rabbit doesn't check this thread.

Oh, lamb, I doubt Rabbit remembers this place even exists.

Rabbit... Rabbit. Is that the convention guy?

You remember those guys you used to hang out with in high school, and you had a bunch of fun with them, but once you went to college they became non-reciprocal follows on social media who popped up every now and again to ask you to bankroll their private D&D nights? That's the podcast crew.

Ah, right, that. I was definitely thinking about something else.

This might be a general AV question but I'll start here as it's specific to Spiderman on the PS4. Basically, only when playing Spiderman, my audio will cut out for a second and the screen will flash white. I only have this problem with Spiderman. Faulty HDMI cable?
