[News] Satirical News Show Clips

I decided to just put a John Oliver clip in this thread and change the name and scope rather than start a separate thread for Oliver's stuff.

So just put any video stuff in here; Samantha Bee, John Oliver, Seth Green, etc.

Automation: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

He's in Love

I think much of the satire is galvanizing the very people it mocks, and the people that see the president as some sort of savior or legitimate politician are becoming more supportive of him. Not so much the satire, but the amount of it and the unsubtle anger connected to it.

I think it also galvanizes the people on the correct side of history, too, and reminds them they are not alone. And are, in fact, the actual majority of the country.

Conservatives don't have a right to not have their fee-fees gently mocked, and would do well to remember that the next time they are screaming about liberal snowflakes and content warnings.

I am not going to be quite or non-sarcastic or whatever to people who support trump.

20+ years of conservative talk radio, Fox News, and, most recently, sites like The Drudge Report, Breitbart, The Daily Caller, etc. galvanized these people. Those media prepped predominantly rural and overtly religious conservatives to believe that a crooked businessman and unfaithful husband who literally lives in a golden tower in Sodom itself, New York City, was (evangelical) Christianity's best chance to save America and themselves.

As we're finding out, the answer to the unspoken MAGA question of "save American and themselves from what?" turns out to be everyone who isn't rich, straight, white, and an evangelical Christian.

And the left's satire of the right really didn't take off until the right lost its goddamn mind after 9/11 and decided to take up permanent residence in the alternative reality conservative media had spent years creating. And even then, the bulk of that satire was literally Jon Stewart talking about how a (conservative) politician said something and then rolling a montage video clip of them saying the exact opposite.

Regarding right wing media I wonder how much is what amounts to an arms race between the various personalities.

As in they all are competing to be top dog (in terms of followers) in a finite market of consumers. So when say Limbaugh says something ridiculous does that spur Hannity to be more outrageous to pull back viewers, which in turn causes Limbaugh to double down.

Limbaugh and Hannity probably aren't the best examples because they're both hosted on Premiere Networks. Limbaugh's radio show runs from 12-3 PM EST and Hannity's runs 3-6 PM EST.

I'm also not sure how much of an arms races happens between the various conservative media personalities. My take is that they're all simply gunning for the highest ratings and will focus on whatever topic at the time will generate the most clicks, views, eyeballs, listens, etc.

And that's the problem.

The Republican Party is now almost entirely driven by these conservative media personalities. Claiming that all immigrants are murderers, rapists, and drug dealers is a smash hit topic for the couple million overwhelmingly older white men who listen to Limbaugh or Hannity or watch Fox News. It'll get viewers and angry callers galore. But the policy fantasies generated in that alternative world can't survive in real America and are actually exceptionally harmful to the country.

There was a great piece published in The New Yorker a few days ago about the incestous relationship between Fox News and the Trump Administration that summed up this dynamic well:

The New Yorker wrote:

Gertz, of Media Matters, argues, “The President’s world view is being specifically shaped by what he sees on Fox News, but Fox’s goals are ratings and money, which they get by maximizing rage. It’s not a message that is going to serve the rest of the country.” Blair Levin, the former F.C.C. official, says that Trump and Fox are employing the same risky model: inflaming the base and intensifying its support, rather than building a broader coalition. Narrowcasting may generate billions of dollars for a cable channel, but as a governing strategy it inevitably alienates the majority."

This is what infuriates me most about conservative media outlets.

I legitimately get the sense that they don't care one whiff about the hate & divisions they sow, but rather the drama only serves to boost ratings.

I bet you a million bucks Limbaugh, Hannity & co. don't personally believe a word of what they say. And I'd venture further that they secretly think their audience are just mindless, reactionary dullards. Perhaps the same way Jerry Springer & Maury Povich exploited their guests & audiences.

So in short, they're just fine with destabilizing & fracturing the country if it means better ratings.

Some might say they're self-serving. I think they're treasonous.
