NCAA Basketball 18-19 Catch-All

FL couldn't do their ONE job and close out a win over LSU to give TN the ability to play Auburn for one seed for the SECT, and sole ownership of the SEC title. Assuming Vandy doesn't do something crazy and beat LSU, and TN wins at Auburn (which isn't assured), they'll tie for SEC Champs, and LSU will get the 1 seed. TN will have to play KY again on Saturday. If they can beat them again, they'll then play probably play LSU.

Of course, LSU might be in NCAA trouble depending on what comes out of this FBI wire tap stuff. So who knows, their season might even not count if they're shown to have illegally paid off a player/family.

They came close, took it to OT!

The FBI stuff is no bueno for LSU. I don't think there are many ways to view that reporting in a light favorable to LSU's coach. It's likely going to be a serious problem for that program (which kind of sucks for the kids on the team that didn't participate in whatever scheme it turns out to be, should it be real).

The NCAA committee doesn't usually act in-season, though. It might not be until next year before we find out that they had to vacate this season.

Right, didn't mean to imply it would be something immediate. Just implying if they did, TN might have sole ownership of the SEC champ for the second year in a row for the first time in forever. Eventually.

I'm not hoping LSU gets that kind of penalty, but if it is what it looks like, it could happen.

Cal wins 3 in a row?

What's happening Carl?

Looks like LSU suspended coach Wade today. Not looking good for that program.

Welp, you called it, MB. Tennessee falls to Auburn. UK at Florida now, NCSU and BC battling. Clemson picks up a needed win against Syracuse. ND falls to Pitt...

So much bball today.

Murray St vs Belmont tonight for the first ticket to the dance.

And Ja Morant, future lottery pick

Last I heard, Belmont is in regardless. Murray St needs the win to punch a ticket. Should be an entertaining game, Ja Morant has serious vision.

[Edit]
Ah, but first guaranteed ticket, of course. Sorry, didn't mean to be obtuse!

UNC gets the season sweep over Duke, which is always sweet. Yes they were without Zion again. They also lost Marques Bolden in the first half (and it looked bad). Hard fought game, and the prize is likely that we'll have to face them for a 3rd time in the ACC tourney, provided we get past the quarterfinals match (which may be Louisville?)

March madness... is upon us!!!

Murray St succeeds in defeating Belmont, to become the first team officially in!

9 more and we're National Champions.

First of the madness upsets (pre NCAAT); St. Mary's over Gonzaga in the WCC finals, 60-47!

Unexpected, for sure.

Shouldn't change Gonzaga getting a 1 seed, but they likely won't be the overall top seed anymore. UVA has a better shot at it, particularly if they win the ACCT. Might help the case for 3 #1 seeds from the ACC, though I suspect a lot rides on the SEC and Big10 tournaments too.

Louisville vs UNC rubber match tonight.

Should be a good game. UNC has to win if they want to keep that projected #1 seed (which I'm not sure they keep if they win then lose to Duke anyhow).

Win over UNC helps Louisville raise their projected seed a bit as well (maybe to 6?)

Yeah the metrics have us 22-23 right now. 6 seed. But the bracket predictions all have us as a 7. Even though the preview bracket a month ago had us right in line with NET ranking.

Win definitely gets us 6. 2 wins could be a 5, depending on who gets through. If we beat UNC, Duke, UVA we'd have to jump up, maybe back to 4 seed where we were a month ago.

But first, tonight. Rebound and watch the turnovers and we can win

I really don't understand the brackets vs metrics. No one seems to really know how the NET ratings will be applied. I think Louisville is definitely a 5, but I agree they probably have to beat us and whoever comes next to get it. Winning out should push back to a 4 (that's likely a victory over #3, #5, and #2 in the country in the span of 3 days? Seems like a 4 seed would be warranted).

I of course, hope for the alternate outcome, but I imagine it's going to be a hard fought game no matter who wins!

And so much for that. How Wyking Jones still has a job (now 24 hours after the season has ended) is a mystery to all of Cal basketball socialmediaverse.

Well that sucked.

Announcers drooling over another Duke-UNC game before the thing even started didn't help either.

Yeah, they just want to see UNC get blown out by a Duke with Zion.

As for the game, it was oddly officiated. There were a lot of fouls called, and ones not called. Still, at least Louisville isn't likely to be left out. Better to be a 7 than an 8 or 9!

And down goes UVA! Strong game from the FSU crew. I think UVA keeps their 1 seed, but this might bump FSU a bit.

Next up, UNC/Duke. Sadly, I expect a defeat in this one. I suspect Zion will be too much on top of an already hot RJ Barrett, and the supporting team.

Hope springs eternal, but reality is a harsh mistress.

Argh. Squandered a 13 point lead in the first half. Came back in the second, but just didn't have enough to get the win despite 2 opportunities to in the final seconds.

Sigh.

Poor final possessions for UNC. Two step back jumpers?

Duke definitely 1 seed now, probably the overall #1 after UVA and Gonzaga lost. Committee won't count the losses to UNC without Zion against them now that he's back.

Yeah, I really didn't understand the 2 errant 3 point attempts. Roy not calling a time out with 10 seconds left? Ok, that's Roy. But Coby not driving on that last possession? Poor decision. Particularly since he'd been cold all game.

Missed free throws were apparently in style as well, since both teams were leaving points there. Oh well. I expected to lose, though I hoped to win. It was about as close as it could get, though. Even with Zion on the floor, we fought them to a standstill.

Duke might move to the top of the 1 line, I don't think UNC keeps a 1 seed though. Probably top of the 2 line. God forbid it be in the same region as Duke.

Insane no call at the end of Florida-Auburn today. A 3 defenders may have fouled, but the one on the left had two hands grabbing the shooter's off arm. Pathetic.

Hope Florida still makes it in after that

Yeah, that was typical bad SEC ref-dom.

I saw it on replay. Absolutely insane. The officiating in the Tennessee/UK game seems equally ludicrous.

Tennessee pulls out the victory! If they win the SEC, I've seen some commentary putting them back on the 1 line.

It always come down to eye-test vs paper resume, I suppose.

Yeah and UK probably drops to 2. But if they still get sent to Louisville region they'll be happy and have home games practically for S16-E8.

Louisville sitting probably on 7 line is interesting... we've already played all of the top 7 teams except Gonzaga: UVA (x2), Duke, UK, Tenn, UNC (x3), and MSU. Not sure where they will put us, or if they go with our NET ranking (21) and bump us to 6 to avoid all those rematches.

If Mich beats MSU tomorrow do they jump up to a 1? Are both still a 2 either way? We might end up in Mich's region by default.

Houston held on to win today, and is a 1 by the NET rankings from this morning, but bracket people (see bracket matrix) have them down as a 3-seed.

So much to wonder about for tomorrow's brackets.

I actually think this is part and parcel of the intent behind NET and related mystery. Last year's bracket reveal was... lack-luster. I wonder if they're going to do the instant reveal like again, or revert to the "one region at a time" classic style?

They're much more likely to get people tuning in for the whole show if they go back to the old style.

Well, that sucked
