The GWJ JRPG Club Version 2.5 HD Remaster: Announcing our Q2 2024 Game!

Also, Last Surprise, level me up! I finished DQ7.

You got it!

I'm making a last ditch effort to finally get through Kingdom Hearts for the club, since I'm bedridden for a few days. That way I can level up and focus on Persona 5.

The new thread is up! And you know what that means ...

Please post in the new thread if you're in!

I finished something! And it was DQ VII! Yay! And I also level up! Thanks for updating the list, LastSurprise!

You’re welcome!

Tangential to the current game (Persona 5) but I thought I'd post here anyway. I finally finished up Xenoblade Chronicles, over 100 hours spent (the wonders of portable gaming). Fine game but clearly constrained by the hardware. Anyway, you won't see me voting for it anymore, a little sad about that.

The end of an era! Congrats, though. I've yet to get past that wonderful hurdle of a game.

It would be perfect for a Switch remaster. The 3D character models aren't terrible but they fall apart close up. Most of the cutscenes are in engine but there are a handful of prerendered ones that give you a taste of what they could look like. Plus the 3DS screen is so small! The voice work is pretty good also. Recommended.

I believe the best way to play this game is using Dolphin. The textures look kinda crap in HD, but otherwise the game really shines.

There's no way I would have sunk however many hours into I did without it being handheld. The New 3DS version is ugly, but it's way easier to play.

It was my commute game for the last 2 months :).

Had a DISNEYWORLD tip in JAN BUT WILL catch up this weekend!

I keep forgetting that, unlike me, some people actually have lives, and do not have unlimited access to a TV

I'm literally giving up an hour of sleep a night just to join the P5 thread :).

Hope you had fun!

Nomination announcement - March 2019

All righty, folks, even though we're all still busy focusing Persona 5 and steal the heart of every evil person in Tokyo (I certainly am!), it is now time for the best part of any Game Club: Figuring out what to play next!

Here are the rules:

  • Any GWJ'er can participate
  • Each participant is allowed to nominate one game.
  • For the game to be included in the final voting, it has to be seconded by at least one other participant.

Nominations are now open, and will be until March 16th at 10PM (UTC-4)! Voting will begin immediately after, and will be open until March 23rd at 10PM (also UTC-4)!

Leftovers from the previous round (no need to nominate):
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel
Available on: PS3, PSVita/PSTV, PC, PS4 available at the end of the month
Estimated length: 82 hours
Odin Sphere Leifthrasir
Available on: PS3, PSVita/PSTV, PS4 (non-Leifthrasir version available on PS2, with horrible slowdowns)
Estimated length: 35 hours
The Last Remnant
Available on: Xbox 360, PC (no longer for sale on Steam), PS4 (Remaster)
Estimated length: 81 hours
Xenoblade Chronicles
Available on: Wii, New 3DS (does not work on regular 3DS)
Estimated length: 91 hours
Breath of Fire IV
Available on: PS1, PS3, PSP, PSVita/PSTV
Estimated length: 41 hours

(Note: The times I used are the 'All Styles' times from HowLongToBeat, rounded to the higher integer).

I will do my best to update the nomination list as the week goes along.

I am always excited to figure out what's next! I've been getting a little bit of that "I want a new game" itch, so hopefully, between this and the CRPG Club, I'll be able to scratch it.

I'm going to nominate Valkyrie Profile (PS1, PSP, iOS / Android). It's one I've never played, but always been interested in. This would be great for my commute

Also, in case anyone wants to nominate them, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana and Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom both will be more than 1 year old on April 1, so they're eligible!

I'd like to nominate Nier Automata.

And I'm sorry for dropping out of Persona 5 after nominating it. I just couldn't play any more after all the garbage with Catherine Full Body.

I will second both Valkyrie Profile and Nier: Automata. Both of those are in the backlog. I've played about 2 hours of Nier and like what I've played. I've attempted Valkyrie Profile at least three times, but never finished it for some reason I can't remember.

As for me, I will nominate Final Fantasy VIII. I've been looking for a reason to replay it.

Ooh, seconded! I think I played the first 30 minutes, years ago. But I love the series, and I'd love a chance to work through some of the games that I never tackled.

Spoiler:

Completed: 1, 3-7, 10, 12 (8 of 15)
I doubt I'll ever tackle 11. I'd try 14 if I could get a few people to play with, and if it wouldn't be interminable.

No apology necessary! I'd have loved to read your take on Persona 5, but after reading what you wrote about Catherine Full Body and Atlus (haven't played Catherine, and was unaware of these issues before) I get it.

I'll third Nier Automata. Really enjoyed the first game a year ago so I've been meaning to check out the sequel. I'll also nominate .hack//G.U. Vol. 1: Rebirth.

If we choose Nier, I might pass. My wife just finished it, I've watched a ton of the game, and I don't have a whole lot of drive to revisit it right now.

As always, my preference is anything playable on Vita/3DS. However, I'm out on Xenoblade Chronicles, finished that off recently!

I nominate Monster Hunter Stories.

Oh! That's a fun one.

All righty, here's a quick summary of what's been nominated so far:

From the previous round (no seconding needed:)

  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel
  • Odin Sphere Leifthrasir
  • The Last Remnant
  • Xenoblade Chronicles
  • Breath of Fire IV

Newly added:

  • Valkyrie Profile (LastSurprise, seconded by bobbywatson)
  • NieR: Automata (ClockworkHouse, seconded by bobbywatson and Forlorn Hope)
  • hack//G.U. Vol. 1: Rebirth (nominated by Forlorn Hope)
  • Monster Hunter Stories (nominated by Ted)

I like the picks so far. Some there mean I will bow out of the next cycle, while others mean I need to really focus on P5 so I can join up. All seem like good choices one way or another.

Nice! What are you particularly excited for?

I wish Breath of Fire IV were available on the PS4, I'd love to try it. But I have none of the right systems to play it, other than a PS2 that I could use to play PS1 disks.

I already own BoFIV, FF8, Odin Sphere and Trails so I'd be very happy if one of them was chosen.
