Also, where is the money going to come from? It's not like they are gonna raise taxes. So out of the funding for kids, or pay for other teachers.

Sounds like we could have a little Battle Royale between teachers. A survival of the fittest to ensure only the best and strongest teachers can teach. Only way to weed out those teachers that make that old proverb of "Those that cannot do, teach" be false. Am I right?

The hungry teacher games

Obviously, we divert money from the military, because all teachers will be part of the Army Reserves.

At least the Army has already prepared for this wide-scale diversion to teaching and are obviously ready to certify a massive number of troops into the profession.

How Does Losing Medicaid Help You Get a Job?

Arkansas is the first state in the nation to impose a work requirement on people receiving Medicaid. The results have been disastrous.

Ugg. And in that article, I learned that my state got approved for a similar work requirement (though it requires 100 hours/month of work or community engagement) back in December. And once again, I'm reminded that I really need to make more of an effort to stay up on more local politics. It's just frustrating because local news sources are just badly put together, and with a really high signal to noise ratio.

Bet no one saw THAT coming.

The state defends the requirement by saying that with unemployment so low—3.7 percent in Arkansas as of December 2018—people who can work should have to in order to receive benefits. Those who don’t comply “don’t value the insurance,” Cindy Gillespie, director of the Arkansas Department of Human Services, suggested.

I want to punch Cindy Gillespie right in her smug face.

How do I know she's smug? It's the only way to say that people "don't value the insurance."

That article was thoroughly depressing. Whatever happened to basic compassion for fellow human beings?

What's the going market value for compassion? Is it publicly traded?

I make $7,000 a month selling compassion on the Internet right from my home! If you follow the link below, you can as well! And the more people you bring in under you to sell compassion, the more you make!

Glad to know I'm not the only one who clicked it.

On a good note, it *is* available for any lucky entrepreneur who would like to make that easy $7000!

We've come so far. A few years ago, this would have definitely been a Rick Astley link...

Obama could have prevented most of this if he had bailed out local journalism instead of banks and cars. Not that anyone could foresee what would happen outside of some historians. But, during the height of the real estate crash somwthing like 40 journalists a day were being laid off, and most never came back. That also happened in Russia.

I'm not sure you can make that argument, there were/are a lot of other factors at play that have impacted journalism (digital movement, consolidation of news sources, FOX news creep, etc). I don't think the real estate crash itself was responsible for the issues your implying.

North Carolina lawmakers are once again pushing to arm teachers with guns, and they're trying to make it worth teachers' while.
Filed on Wednesday, the School Security Act of 2019 would give a 5% salary boost to teachers who undergo basic police training.
These "teacher resource officers" could carry guns in an open or concealed manner, and they would have the same arrest powers as police officers, the bill says.

Outside of this being a terrible idea, and being ripe for abuse, 5% seems like a sh*t raise for doing at least 25% of another job.

What, you thought we'd actually pay reasonable amounts to the people who are doing vital work with the literal children of our country? Surely 5% is enough to compensate for the additional dangerous para-police role that requires a skillset that has little overlap with the training they have? After all, if we actually cared about keeping the children alive we'd be working to, say, actually enforce our gun laws.

Also something worth pointing out: The training we give actual full time police officers in this country barely qualifies as half-assed, I cannnot imagine the half-assed version of THAT could possibly make for a safe environment to have children in.

You are making a pretty strong argument for arming the children. How else can they protect themselves from inadequately trained teachers? I mean, isn't it true that the best defense is a great offense? Why are we giving bullet-proof backpacks when we could give holsters and revolvers?

Welcome to the Libertarian party, where everything's the gov's fault and the facts don't matter.

Welcome to the Libertarian Party, here’s your gun, your bag of uppers, and your map of age of consent laws by state. Now get off my property.

Don't be redic, they'll have abolished age of consent by that point in the dystopian libertarian paradise.

When I taught, one of my peers sent a student to the hospital by whipping them with an extension cord. This is what I think of when I see plans to arm teachers.

I envision students overpowering the teacher at an unguarded moment and grabbing the weapon for themselves.

Ooh, good point -- I'll just add that to the list of why arming teachers is a horrific idea.

Let's see here.. 342, 343.. there we go: Reason #344.

I envision the kid taking the gun out of a drawer. A lot of those gun lockers are pretty terrible quality, those are the ones the schools will buy, you can pick them pretty easily. A lot of those guns won't be in the gun lockers anyways.
