Yes bonfire placement in Dark Souls 1 actually meant something.

Yeah before FROM sold out to a major record label. It used to be about the music....

This actually made me laugh a bit :D

HAH! Didn't see Hobear's remark incoming. Too funny. Some Dan Bull seems appropriate -- and I didn't realize that Sekiro was sooooo close. Looking forward to that immensely!

Continued working my way through Sens Fortress. Got to (almost) the final fog gate, but got slammed by the golem that was throwing the giant boulders at the top.

I JUST BEAT THE FINAL BOSS!!!

YESSSSSSSSS!

What a great game, I can't believe I was able to beat it. Wow! That last fight was tough! I'm feeling good!

Congrats! That joy and jubilee are well deserved!

Few games are as rewarding and feel as much of an accomplishment as a soulsborne game.

I remember my first time through the game, the final boss gave me some trouble where other bosses didn't. Others find him far easier than I. Glad to see you stuck with it and made it through... now, to NG+ and the other ending!

Grats. Did you beat the DLC too?

The real Dark Souls starts here.

Congrats Stevintendo!

How do you feel about cliff side bonfires with a great view of the ocean and some of the best environmental music in video games?

Spoiler:

There may also be bald, homicidal guinea pigs

I'm going to begin this later. Sword and board is my preferred style (it got me through Dark Souls III). Is it a good style for the original game? I'm terrified of backing myself into a corner.

I'd say sword and board is perfect for the original Dark Souls (although I may be over ruled.)

Dark Souls is very much geared towards sword and board. I'm surprised that worked well for you in Dark Souls III, but if it works there, it will work anywhere (except Bloodborne, which I am not qualified to say much more about).

Definitely no sword and board in Bloodborne. There is a joke shield just to rub your nose in the fact that shield's ain't gonna work. I was super worried when I first started playing because I was completely a sword and board player but the dodge in Bloodborne more than makes up for the lack of comfort provided by a large, trusty shield.

Sorry for being a broken record at this point, but I'm going to refer to a comment I made a few weeks ago one more time. In short, sword and board is more powerful in DS1 than any other game in the series because endurance is over budgeted as a stat. If that's your preferred style, you're going to feel very powerful with the right build and item choices.

Use a fire or lightning enchantment on your weapon of choice, and you won't need to invest any points into damage stats beyond the weapon prerequisites.

Would a raw weapon work for that, too, until you can get fire or lightning enhanced ones? Seems like if you're not putting a lot of points into damage stats then the loss of scaling wouldn't be that big of a deal.

If I recall Raw was a trap stat? Never really worked as intended.

Yeah, Raw is basically a trap. A Raw +5 weapon requires the same upgrade materials as a Regular +10. So looking at the basic Spear:

Regular +10: 160 physical damage - D/C Str/Agi scaling
Raw +5: 184 physical damage - D/D Str/Agi scaling

Raw is higher damage, but lower scaling. They both have D Str scaling, but the letters have gradients too. The D on the Raw upgrade is less than the D on Regular. Even your prerequisite stats add to scaling, so that 24 extra damage is probably closer to 5-10 extra damage. It could even be less damage than Regular on weapons with higher prereqs.

On top of that, consider that ascending to a lightning weapon requires a +10 regular weapon, so you'd have to break down the raw enchantment or have a secondary weapon that's upgraded to +10 anyways. If you're swimming in souls and shards, you could do it. For most people, it's better to eat the slight damage loss and save a ton on upgrade materials.

Oh, and Lightning +5 is 200 physical damage and 200 lightning damage. Raw falls off after the mid-game either way.

Thanks for the detailed answer.

I'm still enjoying basking in the glory of having beaten Dark Souls, honestly didn't see that coming when I bought it!

Yeah I did, I particularly liked the fight against Artorias. The DLC in general was good though, really cool approach to adding new content.

Uh-oh, does that mean I should learn to Parry now?

Stevintendo wrote:

Artorias alone is worth the price of admission (the bastard.)

Watching Sean fight the Gargoyles reminded me off a phenomenon I experienced in the early days of Dark Souls. I’d go into boss fights and lose repeatedly and then on one run the Gargoyles, or whatever, would seem to be on exceptionally poor form and I’d beat them thinking, “Wow they fought really poorly that run!”

I loved how much dodging and learning Manus there was in the dlc. All the bosses in the DLC needed that approach. Learn to fight them or they'd wipe you.

That being said I also learned to hate Manus

I liked how his movements had a fluid feel, and also how he'd get lazy and just throw goop at you. I thought the boss fights the DLC were all quite unique though. At the time they felt like much faster-moving bosses than I was used to, which probably helped prepare me for the final boss.

First you bask in the glory of beating Dark Souls. Next you bask in the glory of platinuming Dark Souls. Then you bask in the glory of completing a Onebro run.

Finally, you ascend to the highest level of human attainment by beating O&S using the drums from Rock Band.

Moonlit butterfly down and so are two Forrest trespassers. Methinks I'll go take down quelaag soon.

The Onebro Run sounds terrifying... That being said, I'm pretty sure that Dark Souls isn't done with me yet. Once I've had a bit of a break I might ask for ideas for a different class/build to try out.

You're using the Zweihander right? Does that mean no shield?

Not to mention all the other Souls games.

Shadout wrote:

Or the 'B' word.

OneBros runs are pretty fun btw. Still need to sit down and do DS3. DS onebro was fun throughout, DS2 onebro was annoying to begin with but fine once you're finally properly equipped.

Bosses in Dark Souls scale with your level, right? So at level 1, they have a lot less health. Once you get some decent equipment, you can easily out class any boss.

My one issue with lvl 1 runs is that building a character is half the fun. And then you take that part out.

I had the claymore first so that is up and running. Of course as I am about to get the zweihander going I got the black knights halberd which is a super good drop weapon. Struggle is real lol.

I have a shield equipped but I switch to two hands for attacking.
