Let's talk about naps

Dude, I can't even explain how much I dig naps now at this stage of my life - and I'm not even a parent yet, so in before "you don't even KNOW" commenters.

My favorite is the extended lunch break nap. I have the fortune of working next to my home, so I can pop on the couch for about 45 mins on days it's not hectic. I like to put Seagull playing Apex Legends on the TV real low, gets my eyes shut quick. That, or 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, a wonderful British panel show.

I also adore my post-gym naps. We head to the gym at the light-breaking hours, so sometimes I can get a quick extra few winks in before I even need to go to work.

Super naps are vacation naps. Those I appreciate most usually involve a hammock, a book, shade, and a gentle breeze.

What's your nap situation lookin' like yo?

I hate every adult capable of napping with every ounce of fiery jealousy available to me.

Extreme exhaustion aside, I just can't do it. I can go lie down in a dark room and close my eyes for an hour. But I will not fall asleep.

The most irresistible time for me to take a nap is right after dinner just as a streaming movie rental begins. Something about feeling obligated to watch a movie I just paid for puts me right to sleep.

Post lunch nap is my best and only nap. An essential part of any day off. Pick up a book after eating a bit too much and it's curtains for me!

I could probably fall asleep anywhere. Regular as clock work I fall asleep on the coach on the way home from our club rambles with my head lolling forward or on my arm with my elbow precariously perched on the coach's narrow windowsill.

When camping with the cubs we spend one night in a dormitory and I was told they had a pillow fight that I slept through it. One lad told me he hit me in the face with a pillow then went back to fighting others when I didn't wake up. Not sure I believe that last bit but it is safe to say I'm a heavy sleeper.

I've just had my lunch. I could go for a nap now...

I gotta say, naps are aided so much by a blanket. Simply lying down on the couch is good, but some low background noise and a cover gets the nap POPPIN OFF

I am sooooo jealous.

I can say that my insomnia problem has been somewhat helped by putting Bob Ross on in the background. I may not actually sleep, but it's restful.

Post-exercise naps is my jam. Get out 50 miles on the bike, eat a very modest protein-heavy lunch, then off to snoozeville for 30 minutes. It's very nice. Nicer with a shot of espresso right before the nap. That just makes the wake up so fresh.

This was me until 3.5 months ago when we had a child. Now I can nap anytime anywhere. And if I don't get a nap one day I'm ok but if I don't nap back to back days you don't want to know me.

They have become required and from a study I saw recently, probably will be until she's 6 or so

I don't nap much but I've found with a 30 minute power nap I feel great. Anything longer than that and when I wake up I feel really bad, almost physically sick, for a good while afterwards. I'm chronically sleep deprived, which may or may not have something to do with this.

Put me down for the jealous group. Takes me far too long to fall asleep anytime Inksy down, let alone when i know I’ll have to wake up in a short while.

Course as messed up as my sleep schedule is, you could argue I only take extended naps in place of sleep.

Supes jealous, but I'm here for the 8 out of 10 cats does Countdown mention. That show is delightfully soothing and bizarre.

Weightless by Marconi Union is supposedly one of the best sleep inducing songs, maybe give it a try if you have trouble drifting off. I only have the 8 minute version, but here's a 10 hour session.

I don't really sleep. I take 3, 2 1/2 hour naps.

not a massive nap fan. I feel like it's mostly time wasted which i could be doing other stuff. That said, i can generally fall asleep anywhere - particularly while travelling. Any train/car journey of any length is guaranteed naptime for me, much to my annoyance.

Your passengers are sure to be annoyed too!

well i don't even drive, so they'd be EXTRA surprised!

Even when I cannot nap, sometimes I feel like I get a similar benefit from meditation. I put on some white noise, darken the room, and start the process. Praying rote prayers is a good aid. It's kind of like "Ohm," except with more variation. You could probably substitute a good poem with nice thoughts, especially if it's not too amusing and it has good "thought cadence."

I should get into meditation. I feel like it'd be my kind of thing. The problem would be avoiding nodding off in the middle of it.

This is research I can get behind.

Had a high quality nap this lunch time. Bargain Hunt strikes again ('Pointless' a quiz show often has the same effect.) I suspect familiar shows like that area known quantity and the brain feels it can safely shut you down without missing anything.

Perhaps familiar voices provide a sense of stability as it tricks your brain into thinking that there's people around that will take care of you?

What's your favorite nap spot that isn't bed?

Spoiler:

Cross-legged in a papasan wrapped in a blanket in the corner!

Hmmmm. Sat in the settee, legs out on the floor, slid down a bit so my head can rest on the back cushions, supposedly watching TV but actually drifting off into sweet oblivion.

Minotaar's future tag shall be "Office Napper."

On that note, I cannot nap. Not even a wink. It is just not possible for me to do it. I used to be able to do it, but not anymore.

Nice! Though it should be noted that my office is directly below my apartment - so technically I nap at home.

My gigantic couch, with aforementioned accessories.

Usually the car with someone else driving. Especially after a nice afternoon at a winery. Mmmmm.

Also the giant basement couch isn't bad.

About the only thing I miss now that I've been biking to work the past two years, is the nap on the subway ride home.

On my couch watching shows I want to like more than I actually do. Also, at my desk at work after meals thanks to some blood pressure meds I've been taking (not a fan of this).
