Marvel Media (Spoiler Thread)

In lead up to Captain Marvel, and End Game, we decided to catch up on the few Marvel films we missed the boat for. And we just rolled the credits on... Aquaman.

It was a ways into the movie before we realised we were in the DC universe and not Marvel! Ops. Still, it was awesome.

Venom. Ant-Man & Wasp. They're up next. Before a second viewing of Infinity War. We also thoroughly enjoyed both Guardians of the Galaxy flicks once more. So good!

Captain Marvel is pretty good.

I enjoyed it overall, but the theater experience with other audience members is wearing thin.

I plan on taking the kids next Tuesday when it is $5 night at the theater. I expect it to be good but not great.

Turns out I'm not going to get to see Captain Marvel this weekend for various medical reasons. Oh well.

Here's Mark Kermode, demonstrating once again why he is my favorite movie critic. His reviews feel like reviews.

Captain Marvel - Movie Review Jeremy Jahns

Why is that guy yelling?

I didn't feel like any part of Captain Marvel was a drag, which I note only to say YMMV. There are so many great touches, but most of all I feel like Brie Larson just fills her role so so well. She has a capability to be deadly serious, then light, then humorous, and never does she DiCaprio it up for the camera. It was just fluid and natural.

So good.

Agree on Larson, she's a treasure. Parts of the movie were outstanding and I like a lot of the choices they made. I don't think it's an amazing movie but I'm glad it exists and I hope it makes all the money. Good Princess Sparkle Fists introduction and leads right into the next thing (thankfully).

I loved it.

I also really enjoyed it and liked the actual character . She did a great job of showing the range of the character. Can't wait to see her interact more with the other heroes.

Seeing it at 245 today in 3d. Looking forward to it!

My whole family was pretty "Meh" on Captain Marvel. Kind of mid-tier for me and my wife, and the daughter wasn't a fan at all. Said it seemed like DC quality. Which seemed like a low blow to me.

Marvel movies are kind of like pizza though. Even average pizza is still pizza, and I'm happy to eat it occasionally.

I really enjoyed it, more for the characters than anything else. Like Black Panther, it also seemed like everyone was really enjoying themselves when they made it.

I would put it at a 6 or a 7. I enjoyed it, but that is mostly because I buy in to what Marvel is selling. If this weren't part of the larger MCU I would probably have been disappointed.

This is pretty much where I landed, though I don’t think I would have been disappointed. Really, it felt very samey in terms of plot and characters. It’s a very trite storyline. It really didn’t get much of a personality outside of hey, I’m the next MCU movie. But that was enough flavor for me to pull it from mediocre to decently good.

I also couldn’t help but think that it what made it special wasn’t actually meant for me. And I’m okay with that.

I was trying to remember the history of the Tesseract. This covers it.

I haven't had a chance to watch that, but does it get into the part of Agents of Shield that touches on the tesseract?

I think CM also suffers from the typical prequel problem. We all know the outcome from the moment we go into it, so the steaks are undermined from the get go. I think this one handled itself better than other prequels (Solo, for instance), but it certainly didn’t avoid the prequel pitfalls entirely.

That's why I prefer mine Medium Well.

Not really. Hits the high points of how it moves around, starting with the first Captain America.

Personally, I think Mark Kermode's reviews are professional and well done enough that it wasn't necessary to boost it by comparing it to an asshat with volume control issues.

I've been thinking about this. I don't think you need to be a woman to like Captain Marvel, and not all women will like it, but it's the first super hero movie that's felt like it was made start to finish for a female audience.

There have been others that have nodded toward women, of course. Wonder Woman had a powerful female lead but saddled her with an unconvincing male romantic relationship and a leather schoolgirl outfit. The first two Thor movies tried to appeal to women in different ways: the first was very aware of Chris Hemsworth as eye candy for straight women; the second aimed to be a transformative female fantasy in the vein of Labyrinth or Jupiter Ascending. (The third Thor movie gave up on that in favor of a male buddy comedy, and it was a huge hit with traditional super hero audiences. Go figure.)

But Captain Marvel doesn't really make any concessions to male audiences, similarly to how Black Panther didn't spare a lot of attention for white audiences. Nick Fury is kept firmly in a comic relief role; Danvers isn't ever held up to be looked at; the gender roles of the film and how they affect her get dramatized but not explained; and the closest thing to a romantic relationship she has is with another woman (but this possible queer subtext is handled very differently from the sapphic suggestions in Wonder Woman).

Captain Marvel isn't a perfect film, but it's also aimed at a pretty different audience from your usual super hero flick.

Farley posted the loud man. I was just observing that he was loud. That review seemed better than average for a loud YouTube review, but I only made it about halfway through, because loud.

Angry man is one of the three acceptable voices for YouTube criticism. The other two are fast-talking man and British man. If you get all three at once, it's called a Yahtzee.

Don’t forget Australian man (I love Mr Sunday Movies)

Probably with ketchup.

Voltaire said "Hell is other people." Granted, everyone he knew was French, but still.

I enjoyed the movie but there were definitely a few "prequel" moments that made me cringe.

Spoiler:

Specifically, the stuff with Fury's eye. It was teased throughout the movie and then the cat did it. That was a very "I'll just put you down as Solo" moment for me, where we don't need to see that and it doesn't really add anything overall, but its there because I guess some people get their kicks seeing pointless stuff explained?
