2019 NFL Offseason Extravaganza

Welp, it looks like someone has solved the mystery of Todd Gurley's knee: arthritis

On an unrelated note, Todd Gurley is available for trade in Dynasty league.

Kellen "Chosen One" Winslow Jr had his bail revoked after, you guessed it, making repeated unwanted sexual advances on another senior citizen.

When I think of this clearly unhinged behavior, I can't help but remember that the beginning of this downward spiral included getting in trouble for using synthetic weed, aka "spice". Over the past decade, we've seen horror stories about even brief use triggering long-term and even permanent chemical imbalances.

Winslow was already off to begin with, then you add in NFL head trauma plus synthetic weed, well... I just think that piece of the puzzle helps make the progression from "top draft pick" to "granny rapist" make more sense.

Ravens cut Eric Weddle.

He'll be 34 this year but he's still playing at a high level. Could be a good free agent signing for a team looking for a stopgap at that position. That's assuming he doesn't retire.

I don't get why people smoke that crap. Might as well take up huffing or bath salts.

Browns release our favorite try-not-hard linebacker, Jamie Collins.

EDIT: Had to drop these numbers on some 49er fans that said they wanted the team to sign Collins:

3rd in NFL among all linebackers last year in missed tackles (20)

7th in NFL among linebackers in opposing passer completion percentage when targeted in coverage (87.9%)

8th worst pass rush productivity (pressures per pass rush attempt) among non-edge linebackers.

Can't tackle. Can't cover. Can't rush the passer either, which they had him doing on over 20% of his snaps, one of the highest rates among non-edge linebackers.

First Witten leaves, and now the BoogerMobile is no more.

Maybe Monday Night Football won't be insufferable this season.

Yeah, absolute liability while collecting a paycheck, but those numbers are worse than I thought. Smart on the Browns.

Case Keenum is now a Washington Slur.

First thought: Eeesh that's going to be rough on Washington's cap. I mean not as bad as if they went and got Nick Foles, but trading for someone on a rookie contract would have helped them a lot here.

Second thought: This does not say good things about the actual availability of Josh Rosen on the trade market. Lends more credence to the notion that the Murray-to-AZ hype is smokescreening (though still far from definitive, could be Washington just did not like Rosen and his F*ck Trump hat)

Third thought: I hope Nick Foles likes Florida, because outside of Jacksonville and Miami, the list of realistic destinations for Foles has gotten thinner. Cincinnati could potentially jump in if they decide to move on from Dalton, and the Giants could be in the picture if they wanted to (but seem content to let one of the other teams take him and remove themselves from the QB draft picture). But Washington was probably the strongest non-Florida option for Foles.

Keenum got a reworked contract, with the Broncos paying him a $500,000 restructure bonus as well as $3.5 million of his $7 million guaranteed salary, according to Klis. Keenum is scheduled to make $18 million in base salary this season.

Glad I don't watch football anymore...

So basically Denver retains $3.5m of his salary, and of course his prorated bonus money is staying in Denver. His cap figure for 2019 was $21m, minus $3m prorated bonus and $3.5m of salary, brings us to a $14.5m cap figure for Washington, gobbling up the lion's share of their approximately $17m of free cap space.

Welp, that pretty much punts away any chance the team has of improving themselves at any other position, outside of the draft.

Makes sense. Team with the 4th most cap space, and possibly the most barren wide receiver depth chart in the league. Their top WR is Milkman's ex-punching bag Zay Jones, and their other starter is undrafted free agent Robert Foster.

Now, all that said, Brown is calling this report "fake news". Not sure he's liking the idea of being shipped to Buffalo.

Does Washington have any cap casualties or restructuring they can do? I know so little about their roster outside of their D is pretty good.

This makes me quite happy - not that Keenum got stuck in a bad place but that the bad place will most likely be disappointing again. Redskin fantears - so delicious!

Dallas loses both Randy Gregory and David Irving to violations of the substance abuse policy. Irving promptly releases a video on Instagram saying he is retiring and blasting the NFL's policy. (Irving apparently tested positive for marijuana.) I can't say that I disagree. It's ridiculous that the NFL is fining/suspending players for doing something that is legal in several states, including states with NFL franchises.

Including states with more than one NFL franchise!
Marijuana suspensions are dumb...

So the Steelers and Bills did indeed have a trade deal brewing, but Antonio Brown killed it by refusing to commit to playing in Buffalo.

At this point, I think the Steelers should just sit on him. Fine him for conduct detrimental to the team, take away those four weeks of salary, and then just deactivate him for the rest of the season.

Brandon Scherff is in his option year, they could sign him to an extension and bring his 2019 number down a little.

For cap casualties, there's a couple options, mostly smaller potatoes though. Zach Brown is the best one, he got benched last year, and he'll save them $5.75m. Stacy McGee would save $2.275m, he's a backup at their deep defensive end position, and they've got much cheaper guys in that rotation.

After that it gets tougher. You've got Jordan Reed and Vernon Davis, guys who each gave you a solid half-season as your starting TE, neither of who will likely do it for a full season, and both are overpaid, but removing either one takes production off the board that needs replacing. Reed would save $6m, Vernon about $5m. I could see replacing Davis with a draft pick.

Josh Norman. Obviously, overpaid. But getting rid of him creates a big void at CB.

They can make some breathing room, but they likely won't make the kind of space to be very competitive in the free agent market. And it depends on how short or long term they're thinking, because they feel like they're in compete-now mode (why spend millions on Case Keenum otherwise), which would make them less likely to cut productive guys loose to play cheaper rookies.

Great move by the Giants! Vernon for Zeitler and picks involved.

Dammit, don't downgrade your OL, Cleveland.

I'll be honest, it's a head scratching move by Cleveland given their already talented D.

It's no big deal, Zeitler was only the #1 graded pass blocking guard in all of football by PFF last year.

Yeah, Emmanuel Ogbah dropped off hard as the pass rusher opposite Myles Garrett, but damn.

Well, Myles Garrett played almost every snap last season and it wore on him. He's an uber athlete but if they want him in prime form he needs some snaps off.

So, upgrading the pass rush was going to happen this off-season to maximize their best player.

But to trade a piece of your OL that was instrumental in helping Baker Mayfield succeed is beyond me. The Giants had to be happy to get out of that sh*t contract. That's salary dump level sh*t contract.

Yes and Yes it is

Hey, my Browns are Browning again!

Jags cut Carlos Hyde and Malik Jackson (no surprise) and Tashaun Gipson (much bigger surprise)

Packers and Niners both interested in Dee Ford.

Funny, because the Niners run a 4-3 base defense, while the narrative with KC trading Ford is that he couldn't possibly fit into Spags' 4-3 defense.

Rams sign Eric Weddle, to replace Lamarcus Joyner who will be commanding serious money in free agency (possibly from the Niners)

Antonio Brown traded to the Raiders for 3rd and 5th round picks. Also the Raiders are giving him an extra $11 million added onto his contact. Not an extension, no extra years, just a pay increase. I'm assuming that pay increase is guaranteed money.

EDIT: Wow, even more than that. They didn't just guarantee the $11 million of new money, they turned existing money into guaranteed.

He went from $39 mil with no guaranteed to $50 million with $30 million of that guaranteed.
