New player here. I’ve beaten the first boss a couple of times but can’t seem to get much further than that.

At what point do they let you pick your weapons at the start? So far I start with a bad sword and my choice of a wooden shield (what is the point of that? It doesn’t seem to do anything) and a random bow.

I keep finding blueprints, but after I buy them I get one of the weapons from them and never see them again. Is that how it’s supposed to work?

I keep hearing people talk about effective builds. Do you ever get control over your build, or is it always random? I would have thought there’d be a shop to spend gold in with blueprints you’ve unlocked, but I haven’t found it. All I’ve seen is a smithy that will “upgrade” your current weapons by removing all of the good buffs and replacing them with useless ones. (They say it’s “random” but I’m not sure I believe it.)

Short answer DT - just keep playing. All will become clear in time.

Plus time is relative so technically you have loads of it.....I saw that space movie with Murph so I think I know it all pretty well....

After unlocking 2 items from blueprints, you can start paying towards random starting bows or shields. After 12, melee.

Anyone playing on switch and keen for the DLC release tomorrow? I know I am!

Got back into this on PC after the Switch release, since a couple friends at work were playing. Really like some of the updates, like having the timed doors in between levels, etc.

Still haven't got back to the final boss again though.

This was really cool for me to presence; I had seen games in early development fine tune certain mechanics and weapons; but I had never seen a design process, implementation, testing and redesign with so much clarity.

I really enjoyed the times door within the levels, but I agree it makes for a cleaner experience for players to focus on consecutive kills or speed, and not both.

I love how well this game has evolved without losing its essence.

Got Dead Cells a couple of days ago & oh my why have I waited so long to play this. The combat is pure brilliance, the weapons feel varied & impactful, fleshed out with some delightful mods like toxic cloud, ice attacks, corpse explosions etc.

I love the electric whip & anything that freezes enemies to then crack them over the head with that big hammer weapon, or clatter them with the frying pan. The weapon combos are some of the best I've seen in a long time, you can even take two different bows instead of having to have
one melee weapon. Dead Cells really lets you customize your play style. Throw in grenades & traps that can be modified just as much as your main weapons & the choice in moment to moment combat is plentiful.

A shoutout to the way the game handles progression. I love that you get to permanently keep the general improvements (keep upto 3000 gold when you die, recycle items for money etc). The purchasing of weapon blueprints - that then drop randomly out in the world - also carrying over to each new playthrough is a very cool touch. On the other hand, weapons/equipment, gold, mutagens, mods & enemies are all reset. It feels a good compromise.

I'm addicted! This has torpedoed into my GOTY list with only 2 days play.

It's a really fun game! I originally pushed my partner to it and never expected to get sucked in myself. We actually double bought it on PC and Switch.

They've done a lot of tweaking to the balance, and I really like how they've rethought the brutality / tactics / survival build concepts. They've now made things like a glass cannon assassin's blade build more viable, and have really shaken up the mutations to match. Plus adding more enemies and even a few new biomes. So if anybody hasn't played in a while and bounced off some things, give it another shot! Still a lot of fun.

I think I just won.

Spoiler:

I just beat the king.

Is it worth continuing? I know there are some areas I never got to as I just got the ram rune on my last run so I never used it in the earlier areas to get to places I maybe couldn’t reach.

I really enjoyed it. I got some crazy weapons and skills that would just make enemies melt in my last run.

As long as you're having fun, absolutely. Now you can

Spoiler:

activate the boss cell you picked up to make the game more challenging. The homunculus ability also opens up a couple new things.

I bumped up the difficulty and it's definitely harder. I think I'll leave it at normal until I explore the rest of the areas I didn't get to before I won. I've now fought the Conjunctivitis twice and barely lost both times.

It took me so long to actually beat the last boss on 0BC that I actually rolled right through 1BC the first time through, haha... Going through Conjunctivius is a good plan. Pump cells into the Legendary Forge so you get better quality weapons. I sometimes do easier runs and stock cells for after bosses. That makes a big difference on the higher difficulties.

I love the game- whether I'm dedicated to playing it just fiddling through a life or two while something else is going on. It's a phenomenal game. I chose to uninstall last night, though, after I loaded it got an message about my previous game before starting in a new, wiped world (with nothing unlocked). The only thing I was actually unlocking was health and gold.

It's the second time my saved data has been wiped. It's pretty frustrating and not sure if it's due to their updates, or what. Felt the need to delete and come back to the game again on a future date.

I just saw a paid DLC + Base Game bundle appear on the eshop.

Dead Cells is on my list of games to get to (just got the switch last fall) but I haven't yet. Anyone know anything about this latest DLC?

Nope. Just saw it on eShop and been meaning to double dip, so might be the time.

If it's paid dlc on PC too, I might as well make the switch to Switch version.

I'm pretty sure the next DLC is going to be paid.

Finally picked this up on Switch, as I mentioned.

2nd run made the king.

Still couldn't beat him. But at least my skills haven't totally rusted since I last played 9 or 10 months ago on PC.

Also when I died on the first run I only lost 1 orb. So my stats look amazing right now, like 269 of 270 orbs spent. I've been quite efficient.

Loading screen for levels seems a bit longer than my PC, otherwise it plays great. Feel like I'll finally beat it this way.

I recently got this on Switch too, along with Bad Seed DLC. It's really great. Had my first clear this past weekend. It really scratches that Metroidvania itch for me, until Bloodstained is fixed. I really love the world they created.

Holy sh*t I did it. Run 3 on Switch. King defeated. First time ever.

Got a ridiculous hammer in the castle that did 8k damage and finally replaced my kick weapon that I'd been using to stun everything. Kick + lightning carried me up to that point. I had freeze plus lightning the first run and that wasn't enough to stop the king. Figured I could use the heavy hitter. Also attack couldn't be interrupted.

I did use both of my potions (only 2 unlocked so far, hah), but amazingly enough I never used the revive once power, so I got the achievement for that too!

So fun.

Not really sure what to do now. I guess keep unlocking some stuff. I don't even have all (any beside vine) of the runes. A bunch of levels I haven't even touched in this version. Not sure I care about multiple king runs and harder bosses or whatever end game there is. I just wanted to beat the damn thing once. Woohoo!

I am deep into Children of Morta right now but I feel Dead Cells calling too. I don't know how it is for people who have had a switch for a few years but I'm overwhelmed with good options (and not a lot of playtime.)

I started playing the (first paid) DLC last night.
loving both new levels. They each have their own feel in terms of level distribution, type of enemies, etc.

I'm starting to think I might never get over Dead Cells.

Maxed out the ++ chance at 50, so finally tried BSC 1 last night to unlock that.

Got all the way to the king on first run but had some hairy moments. Invisible enemies on first area were a crazy surprise. I had a rough time in the castle and ended up with 0 vials for the king.

Not sure it would have mattered as my build wasn't great and I only got him to 2/3 health or so. 1 more heal for me probably wouldn't have mattered.

I was prepared for not being able to refill vials between every level, but the fact that they changed my count from 5 to 3 was a surprise too. That alone might have been enough to win. But I guess I'll just have to play a little more conservative next run.

The game is definitely hard again. Hah.

I finished the game on normal, beat the kings hand, my grenades were devastating so they done most of the heavy lifting. I had the vortex one that does serious damage, plus a sinew slicer that was almost overpowered.

I've been addicted to Dead Cells these past few weeks, the combat system really is one of the best there is. The weapon combos you can get, like twin blades + electric whip or Broadsword + Ice Shard really make delightful pairings. The havoc you can reign when your fully geared up, ground slams, quick rolling out of the way of attacks, wall running like a ninja....I love it!

This prob would have been no.3 or no.4 on my GOTY list had I played it more. Its got that immediacy to its gameplay, that just feels satisfying to have 'one more run' when you die.

I put it on hard mode myself Stele after beating the game & its a noticeable jump up in difficulty. Those invisible enemies make it much harder to go for the 'kill 30 enemies without getting hit' bonus.

I also bought the Bad Seed DLC, the new areas are great. The mostly randomized level design works a treat in Dead Cells, you never feel like your just going through like for like, identical structured rooms, corridors etc

I take it you come across the monster in the sewers (behind the bars) after beating the game x amount of times?

Spikeout wrote:

If we're thinking of the same thing, that monster should be there from your first run through the sewers...

Spoiler:

They ask you to return their item, which is the teleport rune. Afterwards it can spawn and reach for you to get the rune back, while you just flip it off again.

I've enjoyed watching Mr. Dragon play through the new content but haven't touched it myself in a while. The tick claws look super fun. Might get back into it after motivating myself to mop up the rest of Hollow Knight.

I bought this back in late 2017, and played it off and on for about a year (including one restart, after a particularly big update). During that time I never beat the game - I never even beat the first boss (mayyyybe once). I reinstalled and started playing again this week (brand new save file), and fell back in love. Also, I got to the king on my first try, and beat him on my second run. Did they tweak the difficulty somewhere along the way? I tried playing with BSC 1 and it was hard as nails again - went back to BSC 0 to farm more cells.

Yeah sorry first run through the sewers it's there, my question is do you ever fight it as a boss? I can't remember giving it the

I just constantly flip it off. I actually thought that

after beating the game the first time & coming back to 'base' that the claws through the wall, busted down door etc was the monster from the sewers on the rampage

I looked up my old PC save files. 62 runs on the first and 6 more on a 2nd save where I thought I would try to limit the weapon pool. 68 runs and I never once beat the king.

Run 1 on Switch got to him and run 2 beat him.

Maybe they evened out the difficultly? Maybe tweaked the king. I don't know. But there's BSC 1-5 beyond the original game now. So there's plenty of difficulty if you want it.

There was a coffee grinder in the "finished any games lately?" thread who said they beat it first run a few weeks ago.

Yeah, that post was actually a large part of why I reinstalled and tried it again. I was questioning whether I needed to turn in my gamer card for never having beaten it before.

Mind you, I'm not complaining, nor am I saying that it's too easy now; I think this is actually a great approach. And the higher difficulties are not just "the enemies hit harder" - there are new types of enemies in each area that don't exist in the base difficulty. Plus, sometimes after a long day of work I just want to fire up a game and feel like a total badass.

P.S.: 46 runs in my first save and 11 in my second; now I'm up to 16 in my current one, and have beaten the king in most of those.

Ah! That's actually related to the Rise of the Giant DLC.

I started a new 1BC run this morning and tried out the new areas from the Bad Seed DLC. The Arboretum was harder than I was ready for and I made a lot of rookie mistakes but the run has survived all the way to the Cavern... It does help that I have watched my partner play a lot so I've already got the idea of each area.

Spoiler:

I did do a much better job dodging Mama Tick's attacks and he's gonna steal my strats now. :-P

Still no 1 BSC king win. Died on spikes of all things, haven't done that before in 40 runs on Switch. I guess they hurt more each BSC but it was still embarrassing.

Up to 70% on the ++ bar though.

Had another run end with one of those cluster bomb guys. I guess that 20% shield only works for the first hit. I dodged down to a narrow hole and boom. I shouldn't have been running such low health but I was trying to conserve vials too much for possible win. Think that was in castle.

I also unlocked the owl finally and love that little guy. Synergizes with my heavy purple runs anyway.

Now I need a skill that gives DPS when pets are out. Is there one?

BSC 1 down last night!

Same double turret build I got through a couple of my no damage vs boss achievements before. Sinew, Heavy, and hakutos bow. Doesn't even matter after that but I had electric whip.

Only 1200/1500 on ++ forge. So I'll probably farm BSC 1 more until that is maxed. Then I hear the real fun begins on BSC 2.
