Fallout: 76 Catch-All

Yup, I shelved F76 for the forseable future and am playing Fallout 4 instead. Granted, I bounced off F4 hard when it was launched, but it doesn't have the sync issues F76 was giving me.

Aye - I'm playing Enderal instead, which is a giant Skyrim total conversion for that sweet, sweet Bethesda RPG style openworld!

eh, I play Fallout with my little sister. Otherwise, not so much.

Last night I had a heap of fun running through a "Launch a Nuke" scenario at launch site Alpha. It took over an good hour or so solo, and I burned through a heap of ammo for my different weapons. I had to switch up to lesser used weapons towards the end. I got to the end of the quest where I could choose a target before I realised that I no longer had a launch code. Doh, I never bothered checking my inventory for the launch code before I started. Oh well, it was a heap of fun, and I got a heap of good junk and weapons, including a few legendaries out of it.

Fallout 76 is still my go to timewaster game that I keep playing. I'm enjoying it a lot.

All you really need is a launch keycard. While the code pieces expire each week, you don't need to actually have any to launch the nuke. This site has each silo's code once they've been figured out (and can help you figure them out yourself if you do have a bunch of code pieces). They're usually somewhere on the FO76 reddit too (though most people will just point you to the NukaCrypt site. Once you use a keycard it's gone even if you mess up entering the code, but fortunately you can hold more than one at a time, so you can hunt down several cargobots to stock up before making a silo run.
Last time I launched a nuke I entered the code for a different silo, using up my only keycard. I was able to go to Whitesprings to initiate the quest that tracks a cargobot, get a new keycard, and quickly run through the silo (the bots had all respawned but the quest didn't start over and the rooms were all still unlocked) which was still waiting for me to take the next step. So I've taken to keeping more than one on me at a time.

Honestly, from the examples they gave, it sounds like a waste of time.

Yeah, there's not much about it that really appeals to me but people have been asking repeatedly to be able to be moonshiners for awhile, so it's at least responding to an actual player request.

So what do I have to remove from my base to make room for a still? I've really enjoyed the game except for the base building. I want to build fantastic "home away from home" structures (like in Conan Exiles) but the build limit is so small I have a shack (with defenses, granted).

Do you just have like two dozen turrets or something? I was able to build a pretty roomy 5x5, 2 story house with all crafting stations, a lot of decorative items, and 5 level 2 turrets without hitting the cap (though admittedly coming fairly close).

yeah the build budget is utter garbage.

Actually I have a one-room shack with 4-6 turrets. But I also have a cement wall and a junk harvester so I'm not sure how much that contributes to the build budget.

I'm not sure what Bethesda envisioned, but if you're going to give us a big sandbox to play, let us play how we want. Though I do understand if there are server limitations to people building castles and mansions.

Even the build budget for places like Thunder Mountain are low. Base building is something I really enjoyed about Fallout 4, and Fallout 76 is not scratching that itch very well.

I have two water purifiers, five turrets, some fencing, an adhesive farm (four each of Mutfruit, corn and Tato plants), a steel harvester and one of each kind of workbench in a small, two story wood shack featuring two beds and two stash boxes (so my wife and I can both rest and access our stashed without getting in each other’s ways) and that’s about all my base can hold.

I’d love to be able to put in some decorations, but I’m not sacrificing my turrets because I’m surrounded by spawn points for supermutants and scorched.

I understand the reasons why the bases have to be small, but I’d like to be able to do more customization than I’ve been able to.

Honestly, I ditched all mine but one in favor of decorations. If I ever move and build a new camp I doubt I'll have more than the basic turret, and even then just for the audible cue that something's attacking. Turrets do such a terrible job of actually defending that they're not really worth it for your camp. I can't count the number of times mole rats and rad rats were allowed to wander freely and destroy my stuff in full view of my turrets. They are useful for workshops, particularly the ones that have scorchbeasts attacks, but that's about it.

This is some Rust level stuff here:

I'm surprised there's that much buildable space in that area.

On the one hand, it's kind of a jerk move doing that to newbies. On the other hand, where else is going to get enough foot traffic that someone will see it?

(Note- I had to watch with the sound off, so If the creator explained this I didn’t hear it) How did they get enough base-budget to make that? That thing is huge!

It’s mostly just wall and floor pieces though, which are relatively inexpensive as far as the build budget is concerned. He probably has plenty left over.

Hopped in last night. I’m not a great team member candidate because I don’t play the game, I play the world. Maybe that’s why it’s so rewarding for me: the mechanics are fine if you’re playing for the solitude and specter of danger. I guess I impart some sense of dread on things which are not necessarily mechanically challenging because I want them to be dreadful.

Anyway, had fun doing not very much for an hour or two (can’t recall how long I played). I’m level 11 as of last night and there’s so much of the world I haven’t even seen, that I’ll get all kinds of time out of this game even without any expansions.

My 14 yo son is dipping his toe in. I’m not sure if he’ll get into it. He seems underwhelmed.

I'm not going to get into it too much, but I'm really not enjoying this anymore. I'm level 42, I think, trying to do a quest where I keep getting swarmed by multiple scorched, deathclaws, scorchbeasts.. its just not fun. Can I do it? Yes. Losing progress anytime I switch servers isn't helping any.

At what point do scorch beasts become something worth fighting? Are they ever worth fighting? (I hope so, because hiding doesn’t work and running is just a waste of stimpacks and armor repair materials. You’re better off stripping all your armor and just waiting for death)

I’m almost level 40, and my wife is above it, and the only time I’ve tangled with one my wife wasted a couple of mini-nukes that didn’t even scratch the thing.

Like everything else, they scale to match the level of the people in the area. If you're running with your wife at a higher level, they will be tough. The key is to get them when they are on the ground. I like using the .50 cal.

The Queen is really the only one ever worth fighting, though sometimes the level 80 ones can drop plans as well.
Fighting scorchbeasts really requires the right perks and power armor (unless you have an amazing legendary weapon and armor pieces). Ideally, you'd get into your power armor as soon as you see them heading towards your area. I think you can add a power armor chassis to the quick wheel so you can delpoy it without having to go through the pipboy menu. The easiest way to fight them is to use a rifle (preferably semi-automatic and non-scoped) with the perks Tormentor (so rifle hits have a chance to cripple) and Concentrated Fire (to let you pick which part you're hitting in VATS). Use VATS to cripple their wings as they're much more likely to land once they're crippled, and once they're on the ground you can use whatever your most damaging weapon is to finish them off.
Remember that these are supposed to be tough to fight. Don't be afraid to use chems to increase your damage output and resistance.

If it's the mission where you go into the Glassed Caverns, you don't have to start over and re-find the beacons if you crash or change servers. Just go straight into the Glassed Caverns and find Taggerdy.

I'll consider this.. thanks for the tip. I did wonder about that.

Are the servers still kinda flaky or is it just my internet pipeline? I'm on a fiber plan from a local Bell company and Speedtest gave me good results (ace down and up speeds, great ping), but I see stuff hitching oddly since switching from Spectrum/Time Warner. I got booted two or three times last night because I lost connection to the server.

I know network stuff is tough, and I'm not really complaining as much as triaging my particular issues.

I started playing this again, being home from work sick these past few days.
muraii - I got booted from the game once as well, after a long bout "bad connection to the host" messages.

Its funny - I'm level 25, but everyone else is level 100+!

I ran into something called a Rift? With an angry demon attacking me.
Anyways - having fun in this, actually!

I'm the wrong time zone for most of you, but I'm Level 72 (ish), have played since beta and still enjoying myself enough to keep playing. I play on XBox (gamertag is Grofazau), and always looking for people to explore with!

A co-worker of mine was traveling through West Virginia this weekend and found this at a rest stop there...

He said he actually drove through Grafton and thought about finding the train station to see if he could use their armor workbench...

Ha.

Seeing real-world tie-ins to FO76 just makes me cranky that they didn’t actually include the New River Gorge. The bridge is there and is pretty cool, but what it’s over sure ain’t the Gorge...
