Apex Legends - Catch All

I'm also not entirely sure if I like this game or not... or at least like it enough to progress and have it occupy more of my mindspace and gaming time. What it has done is rekindle my interest in FPSs in general, which is fantastic as it's always been one of my favourite genres. Only recently I've been undergoing a phase of "I'm gettin' too old for this sh*t" and maybe not giving very many shooters the time of day out of hand. It turns out all I needed was a game to come out of nowhere to spark my interest again.

That’s good news. Mine haven’t turned up yet.

Had my best game last night. I messaged someone to play a different game and got no immediate response so I though I’d launch another game and get myself killed in the meantime. Of course it then turned out to be my best match to date with my mate getting back to me in the middle of it. None of us were experienced but we killed three squads and I felt like I was gathering and utilising loot a lot more intelligently.

I got two wins last night on Xbox, equaling my previous best evening. Of course, I played for about four hours straight.

If you read the news post that accompanies that strip, there's a like to their Twitch, where you can find a past video of them playing Apex together. It has some entertainment value.

The first game I played last night they highlighted me as the champion of the previous game, with zero kills and actually I didn’t come close to winning anything. I don’t understand but I got a chuckle out of it.

If one of your teammates had one it will do that.

Very interesting but I can see practicing these techniques will be fraught with danger to say the least.

Not really. it's on a super short cool down.

Makes pathfinder a lot more appealing. Think he might become my second choice after lifeline.

I primarily use Pathfinder and I've made some wild grapples. They don't always work out, if you use it to flank a team and they communicate well they can just turn around a blast you to bits. But I've had some pretty good escapes with it, like going from the bottom of a ravine to on top of the sheltered bridge above it. I've been trying to learn Caustic more because the smoke is a great area denial...but for some reason I'm just awful with him.

I leveled up enough to unlock a character, so I picked Caustic...not very good with him yet. When's the best time to unleash his big stink bomb? I don't want to give the enemy cover...

I'm still obsessed, though I have limited play time most days. If you see me playing on Xbox, for the love of all that is GJWer, come help me.

I sort of know how to do the jump thing now, at least the part where you speed up to 145, glide forward, then speed up again. I also ran my group into a cliff and dropped them into an empty area with...nothing. That was not a popular move.

What's been great is various GWJ people telling me that adventures like that are half the fun, and not to be afraid to practice, even if the team doesn't love it...

Hopefully I can find IDg4f and his buddy again. Very fun and very funny.

I've won two or three games with a Caustic in the group and in the two that I remember clearly, Caustic's gas played a big role in winning. His ability is mainly good in confined spaces.

In one game, we got into a room in the final circle and barricaded ourselves in with his barrels. When the final squad rushed us, Caustic may have also used his Ult - in any case, there was a ton of gas, they could barely see us, and we generally shotgunned them to death.

In a game where it was just me and one random (had a quitter), we ended up in a very narrow little canyon pathway and he started throwing down barrels; there, too, the gas was very helpful in positioning the other team and limiting their movements.

If anyone hasn't gotten their Twitch loot boxes I tried again to link my accounts (even thought it previously told me I'd successfully done it ) and this time they turned up no problem.

Yeah, as long as your Twitch account is linked to the EA account that you are connected to on the platform you're playing on, the Twitch Prime rewards will go to whichever platform you login to first after claiming the rewards. I got mine on Xbox as I wanted.

I won my first match over the weekend! My teammates combined for 14 kills, but I got 1 too, and survived all the way until the end! The next day I scored 3 kills in around before dying quite early on, but my highest one round kill total yet. Maybe I'm actually learning!

Apparently there is some kind of problem with oversized hit boxes on some characters. They're looking to fix it.

I've gotten a lot better after turning my DPI down and my mouse sensitivity. I'm still not good, but my hit % is a lot better than before. I had one game with 5 kills and another with over 1000 damage yesterday.

I was just about to post this video about hitboxes.

This certainly explains why I tend to do so much better whenever I play Wraith or Bloodhound despite 80% of my playtime being with Pathfinder. Pathfinder's hitbox is almost 2x the size of Wraith's. And it is even worse for Caustic and Gibraltar. They should really scale up the hitpoints for the larger players or something.

So that's why I get straight murdered all the time? It's not because I suck, just maining Caustic means that I'm a sitting duck!

Spoiler:

No, it's because I suck.

Now I have no excuse as Wraith and Lifeline, dammit!

Gibraltar has abilities that are suppose to compensate. Now, I don't think his shield has enough HP to be worth it. HP is not a good way to balance the hitboxes in a game like this. The hitboxes should be balanced based on abilities/strengths/weaknesses of the character. If you balanced by HP would make early game fights where you are normally close range is hit boxes normally are not a big issue and HP would be huge advantage. Also makes snipers late game a lot less effective when they are not even super strong at the moment. Balancing based on HP is an old school method of thinking that in my opinion does not work well on BR game modes.

I've said for a while I think Gibraltar is weak currently because of his hitbox. His low HP aiming shield is not enough to make up for it. His dome however is really strong with a team that uses shotguns. The issue with pathfinder is the hitbox is different than what the model looks. You can see from Caustic/Gibraltar they have bigger hitboxes. Pathfinder though looks pretty small but then has some large area's where you can get hit you should not.

Pathfinder/Gib need some help (mostly pathfinder i think just needs his hitbox fix to fit his model). Honestly I think caustic's abilities make up for his large hitbox. I don't enjoy playing him much but do think he is pretty strong. Wraith probably needs nerfs whether it be bigger model size or lowering her main ability time. Her Ulti is very situation which helps but she is still pretty strong currently. Lifeline should have a very little hitbox because she has mostly no active abilities that are a big help in battle (her healing drone can be used in some situations but is too slow for most fights). I really think bloodhound/mirage/bangalore/caustic/lifeline are all in good places.

I'm maining Mirage since I unlocked him but yesterday I did get a win as Gibraltar when I couldn't get Mirage.

I don't know if I've said this before, but I find Respawn's shooting to be very difficult to adapt to. It was true in TF2 and it's true now. In, say, Destiny 1 I usually did pretty well in PVP - not great, but definitely pulling my weight. In Overwatch (which is a poor comparison in many regards) I would almost always be in the top half of 8-player FFA PVP (gotta get those free loot crates for playing Arcade).

I'm definitely improving at Apex but I still feel like something about the shooting isn't natural for me.

Had my most enjoyable gaming session thus far finally playing with some fellow GWJers. Even though we were all fairly inexperienced, by our second game we managed to make it to a hard fought final shootout for 1st place against a much more skilled squad. It really highlighted for me how much of a difference good communication, patience, and cooperation can make even in the absence of twitch skills. The cheerful grownup banter was also a vastly more enjoyable experience than having some trigger happy teen saying over and over “YEAH, LETS F***ING DO THIS MFers” before ultimately going off on a tirade of verbal abuse against us teammates (which describes about 30-40% of my games with randos).

Looking forward to playing with more GWJers!

(Btw, is there a way to actually mute chat on the PS4 version? I can’t seem to find anything in the options except for convert chat to text which so far seems to do nothing)

I've yet to have a negative encounter with another player. Everyone is all business in my experience.

I run into an ass hat about every dozen games or so.

My only truly negative experience was one guy saying "you guys suck" when we wiped, even though he was the first to die - so it didn't affect me too much. I've had a couple people play music or dialogue during the drop, though, and one who was rapping along with it for the first two minutes and then just quit out.

In general, everyone seems okay and trying to play as a team. I actually have zero wins that don't involve at least one rando, unless you count the second win with a rando that we intentionally stayed together with for the rest of the night.

I had one game where a kid said "I'm solo jumping. Don't follow me". I had a game where I was called lady parts for dropping hot. One game I was told to stop stealing stuff from the ground in a very colorful way. It's been exciting.

Wait a minute, you're lady parts FOR dropping hot? I'm imagining a complicated scenario where, in these enlightened times, with people not using that expletive anymore, young assholes don't even know what it was intended to mean back in the day - because this guy is clearly getting it backwards!

The more I play the more I feel (and hear/read from better players) that you 100% want to drop somewhere that has a better chance of high tier loot. You might have to fight sooner, but that's okay. This is a game about fighting, at least in large part.

I've generally had good experiences with pubbies in this game, even some good voice coordination. I can only recall one, sorta bad experience (a pubbie who was salty about my choice of drop location). I'm sure there are lots of awful people playing as well. It is worth noting that the game has speech to text comms if you do want to turn off voice chat.

My main problem with playing with pubbies is the frequency by which people drop the game after dying, even if I make an attempt to rez them.

It was enormous fun Otaku_Ossan. Hopefully we can play more soon.
