Dark Souls Catch-All

Also, I'd say in general if you're finding it to be a long run to a boss then you've missed a bonfire somewhere. They're usually pretty good at that.

Killing all those enemies early on is how you learn the game and become comfortable with the combat. If you can't make it to the Taurus Demon without using several Estus Flasks, you need to keep practicing fighting normal enemies.

Yeah that's my take. Hell, even with 100s of hours sunk in to these games I still clear out areas.

That's not my take though. If you're making a boss run, make a boss run. If you're exploring and battling, then explore and battle. Change things up between those goals when the frustration mounts. Making the same run through the same enemies again and again, burning resources along the way, is counterproductive.

Dark Souls has a funny way of, by way of our own frustration and impatience, forcing us into gameplay ruts we don't even recognize until we take a step back and consciously change our approach. Perhaps there's a life lesson in there

I made it to Blighttown...seems like a nice neighbourhood...

The boss at the end of the Depths was brilliant. The reveal was so effective - I honestly had a moment where I though "this doesnt look so bad" - and seeing it up close was genuinely intimidating. As in, there was a lot of just staying as far away as possible till I adjusted to my new reality. It actually spooked me.

It also seems like the normal enemies have gotten a lot tougher now that I'm in Blighttown. There were these three big things right at the entrance that just didn't feel like going down, followed by an infinite number of normal sized things that used what looked like dead versions of themselves as weapons... And I don't wanna think about the giant plant/squid thing that I think I saw below me earlier...

Things are getting weird.

But my Gargoyle Helm still looks awesome, and reminds me that I can handle these A-holes.

Blighttown is relentlessly bleak, but you've got the right attitude. At least nowadays one doesn't need to contend with 10 frames per second along with all the intentional nastiness.

Gargoyle Helm is my jam!

Also, yes, Blighttown on Remastered is crazy. Crazy that you aren't fighting the framerate as well as the environment and enemies.

Since many of us are waxing nostalgic here about Dark Souls, may I suggest more people try a Onebro run? It totally refreshes the Dark Souls experience! Honestly, making Dark Souls hard once more makes you fall in love with it all over again.

Let me be clear. I have no problem with people telling me they think I am doing it wrong. The Taurus demon runs I cleared it out because I found myself dying when trying to rush past the move to get up the stairs to the fog gate.

I am getting better at realizing what mobs I can walk by and ignore and what ones I need to deal with.

I'd never want my comments to be construed as anything other than good natured ribbing with maybe a bit of constructive suggestion built in. I'm quite enjoying the run so far. It's like watching a suspense movie, and yelling "Don't answer the door! No don't split up!" That's part of the fun as a spectator.

Pfft. The real Dark Souls starts in Yharnam.

And then asking if there is a pause button..

I do have to agree that playing Bloodborne after Dark Souls was painful.

Oh god... I hate Blighttown... Constantly poisoned, constant mosquitoes, leech things who's movements I can't seem to predict, it's awful.

Oh yeah, I got a thing to upgrade my estus. Turns out the woman who does that is dead now. Oh, and Firelink Shrine doesn't work anymore.

Yay.

I miss the Bell Gargoyles.

This makes me so happy! Sorry Stevintendo!

Oh no! This was the one event that Mr. Dragon warned me about after I found an orange message suggesting I do something to prevent it (I asked since those can be trolly). He usually lets me discover things organically but knew that series of events would upset me. But you're getting the authentic experience!

it can at least be fixed

I actually did find that a bit upsetting... Firelink was my home base for so long and now it's gone, it feels strange. I found a new item in my inventory that explains a little more about what happened the Bonfire and the woman, but that doesn't help much...

Ha ha, I can't blame you!

At least I'm getting the hang of the leeches. And the constant cycle of die, retrieve, kill some leeches, the, etc. means I have lots of Large Titanite now.

I like this. Will I naturally figure out how to fix it?

Mmmmm, sort of. Not really. If you want to be really sure, ask a walkthrough.

I agree with this, but I'd say "Probably, but not for a while, and you won't realize you're doing it at the time."

I had somewhat forgotten how annoying the Depths (wohoo cursed! Time for a "quick" departure back to Bell Tower. I wish DS1 had quick travel from the start) and early Blighttown can be. And to top it off, that PTDA mod changes the location of the first Blighttown bonfire. So lost. So poisoned.

Or just ask one of us. Pm me if you want a no spoiler version of what to do

Thank you, everyone. After watching Sands play, I was starting to think that maybe I would give the game a try. I'd played Demon Souls when it came out, but bounced off of it after a while. But, reading the discussions here about difficult boss fights, etc. I remembered that I've broken a few controllers in my time and know that this game will only fill me with rage and make me break things. I will not buy the game.

I pass the test. I will diminish and go back to Rocket League and remain happy.

I don’t know. My kill count on controllers is way higher in Rocket League than Dark Souls! No team members to get angry at here.
Also bounced off Demons souls the first time around, but that second try changed everything

Hey folks, if I have the PTDE of DS1 plus the über-mod that supposedly made it tolerable to play on PCs a few years back*, is there any point to buying the remastered version? Is it just shinier graphics or what?

*can't remember the name but it was the one all the guides recommended.

Also, gameplay question: what is the right timing on the parry? I can't seem to get it at all.

Depending on the mob it’s roughly a split second before or after you pressed the button for parry.

Edit...must have replied to old post apologies.

I'm having trouble posting from my phone keep losing my post.

I think the mod you are talking about is DSfix. It cleaned the original game up alot and you were able to run it at 60fps the game was locked at 30.

The remaster runs at 60 natively which is a big improvement. Even with the patch alot of animation was tied to the frame rate and certain actions would cause you to clip through the world (like sliding down ladders).

I don't think the game has a big content change like DS2 did when Scholar of the first sin came out.

I think online is likely better in the new version From was pretty active before launch saying they were going to crack down on modding and cheating in multiplayer.

The PC version of the original is still very good and playable with DSfix at 30. If you don't have that version or want to get more involved online I'd likely just go with the remaster at this point.

I'm sure someone else here knows what's changed better then me, as I've yet to play the remaster. If I'm wrong though I'm sure I'll be corrected.

The right timing for parry is once you've beaten the game for the first time.

OMG, watching Sean vs the Boar has to be the single funniest thing I have ever seen on YouTube. I think I was still laughing for 2 or 3 minutes after the video ended.
