Rocket League Catch All

Yeah I thought about it afterward and I've probably only put in 50 hours or so to get to 65 or whatever I'm at. I thought I remembered reading somewhere when the first rocketpass came out that they anticipated 100 hours to finish it but maybe I misremembered that.

Yeah I think you're right. Predicted 100 hours for the first 70 levels. You need to get to level 110 to get all 10 keys back. Add some double XP weekends and the increasing XP bonus over time and it likely takes a lot less than 150 hours to get all 10 keys back. If you play that much it's just gravy but if you are playing more than usual just to get your keys back it's likely not worth it.

I like the progression and getting items from rocket pass but I'm not interested in most of the items. Each pass has had 2 or 3 items I actually like but not enough to really justify the pass itself and most of the items eventually become worth few keys so it would be easy to trade for the few I want. I play so much anyways I always get my keys back so the items are basically just free.

Every time there is a seasonal event with golden crate items (eggs, pumpkins, gifts) I just end up trading those golden items for keys so I always have a key surplus anyways.

New Ferocity crate drops next week.

New car is a dominus hitbox.

Nice.

Every season I forget how much I hate grinding ranked wins until the next season starts. When I’m winning in my rank and it counts as bronze wins it is depressing. I miss the old ranked stystem where you just had to get to a rank and it was done.

Also, it’s amazing how many people are playing the alternative sports modes like dropshot very badly because they don’t understand them and then call out their team and say things like “well I’m champ in standard so you guys must suck and that’s why we are losing”. As someone who solo queues to champ in doubles and standard I can say from personal experience that champ in other modes is not assumed. The only other mode I’ve had champ in is hockey and that’s because I played it a ton and learned from dedicated hockey players.

Heck I know a lot of champ players in standard who can’t even get high diamond in doubles because those two game types are different enough. I know mid champ players in doubles who suck at standard because they play it like doubles and completely ruin the rotation. Doubles players who play standard like it’s doubles are my personal bane when solo queueing because they tend to be completely oblivious to what they are doing and tilt badly about it. Doubles players seem to not get that high level standard is a far more complex game type than high level doubles.

Good games last night, Norfair and Carl.

At least got my doubles rank locked in to diamond. Still working on standard.

Guess I'll do bottle rockets tonight but if anyone wants to do some ranked before/after I'd be down.

Yeah I try to avoid playing ranked doubles and standard on the same day. Gotta get my head right, bad things can happen otherwise.

I prefer standard but doubles is a good way to get practice in on shots and ball handling since there are more opportunities for it there. I just started playing doubles again today as I was getting frustrated with my play lately and I'm hoping switching it up might help me.

Bottle Rockets started out as a pub match today but we rapidly had too many players for that so we split into 3 ranked groups. Good to see so many people on again.

Man, I finished my tenth placement match last night and only got platinum 1.

Hey, whats wrong with platinum 1?

I haven't done my placements yet, but I feel like I've been playing lousy lately so I'm hoping to get at least Plat 1 which is where I was for most of the last season.

I'm right there with you, lets get that up. Obligatory that's what she said.

We had a pretty good hockey game last night.

GGs Norfair and Disco!

Some clips from other Snow Day games the same night

Catching some shade.

I placed in plat for the 2nd straight season, I guess this is just where I'm meant to be. I should probably spend more time in training but don't really like it or find it super helpful for the most part.

How do you guys train? Are there certain custom trainings that have really helped you? Are there videos that have helped? Mods?

IMHO the fastest way to rank up is to play with and against slightly higher ranked players and pay careful attention to what works for them and what isn’t working for you then focus on those things.

Definitely focus on making your movement mechanics more efficient and work on your reads. People often don’t notice but if you compare different ranks and carefully watch how they play you’ll notice higher ranks are far far more efficient at moving their car where they need to be fast. Best training in the game for that is still free play.

If you want to actually focus on getting good, opposed to just playing and having fun, hours and hours in free play is probably the best way. Panda has posted multiple videos to this forum on different topics. Use game time to figure out what you’re lacking, or just decide on something you want to get better at, and work it. Example, when I decided that I needed to learn wave dashing, I sat in free play for hours, lined up in one goal, and just wave dashed over and over, no gas no boost, from one end to the other. Now I can mechanically do them, but am still working on the thought process of actively incorporating them. Baby steps.

Look back through the forum, as a I said, Panda posted a lot of good stuff that has helped me a ton.

I have a big YouTube playlist of RL videos I often share:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...

There is a lot there for various ranks so if there is some specific thing you are looking for lemme know and I can recommend specific ones.

One that people often overlook an I keep sharing is this advanced goalkeeping drill by Kevpert that is also the best way I know to get good at fast aerials:
https://youtu.be/Omk31pxWP-E

The GWJers I know who focused on that drill have seen large improvements in their fast aerials.

Kevperts car control drills are still some of my favorites:
https://youtu.be/ed8owajA0Lc

If you aren’t familiar with why everyone keeps saying just “smack the ball around in freeplay” here Is a basic video on that:
https://youtu.be/yFrt6pIX1J0

Musty’s video is good as well:
https://youtu.be/IUvJvlv9r4o

None of these cover exactly how I use freeplay these days so I’m tempted to make a short video on that at some point. I have some really good free play drills that have helped me improve a lot. I’ve shared them with a few people and I’m waiting to hear back if they were useful to those people.

Cool, I'll check those out when I can. I like that they show you what to do, as opposed to downloading a custom training where it puts you in scenarios but doesn't explain how to do them, or the best way to do them.

I guess no more complaining about east coast servers. Ya right.

Disco I'm really curious what you see in the IBuf graphs in game around when you have server issues.

Seems like the opposite reason to why I play games. I have many hours playing this game (not as many as most of you with whom I play), but quite simply if its not fun, I'll go find something else to do. On a good day I'll get up to Diamond 2, on a bad day I'll drop back down to Plat 3, which is definitely better than where I was months ago, and I've probably spent no more than 3 hours total in free play since I downloaded it for free on PS4. If getting to Diamond 3 or higher means I need to spend 100 hours hitting a ball by myself, I think I'm happy where I am.

Of course, to each their own, and play games to have fun. If practicing in free play is fun to you, by all means go for it.

Still don't know what a wave dash or half flip is.

Oh, if that is what a half flip is then I guess I can do that in Rocket League already.

I’ve heard people try to split gamers and esports players into distinct groups because while both play for fun the esport players find competition fun and not necessarily the game itself. In reality everyone is a combination of both in some measure I’m sure. To each their own.

Personally I’m very much into Rocket League for the competition. I practice because it helps me get better which I enjoy and it helps me constantly compete against better players which I enjoy a lot. That competitive feeling is something I absolutely love and always have loved in physical sports throughout my life. I’m not into casual sports just to play.

Winning itself is not interesting to me otherwise I would just always smurf and win 100% of my games but that would just be boring as hell. I only care about winning when it’s hard and feels like an achievement. I would rather lose a tough game than win an easy one.

When I’m playing casual matches I am using that as practice time where I specifically focus on something I’m trying to improve. If I was just there to “play the game” I’d be bored.

I’m NOT criticising people who are there for the fun of the game and not the competition. That’s great. It’s just not me.

Dicko was an accident, my compliment on the bumps was genuine. Good times.

Carl, get Half flips in your arsenal. It's a backward flip that you cancel while you're parallel with the ground, then air roll to get your tires down. Super handy for reversing direction at speed. I set X to air roll right to make it easier. You can get it with not much practice and totally will up your game.

i'm not advocating not practicing or learning... i just don't think "Have fun" and "get guud" are mutually exclusive. Like you said, you are improving things when you play with our ragtag GWJ group, but I hope you're having fun doing it, if not I assume you wouldn't join the group for bottle rockets or whatever.

I have managed to get better and have fun doing it playing comp, non-comp, with-GWJ without GWJ for the last few years. I want to get better too.. but not at the expense of actually enjoying my time with the game.

Maybe I just misread the original post, but to me it sounded like you can either have fun or actually improve your play... I think you can do both simultaneously.

Can definitely do both simultaneously but there are some things that take a lot longer to learn in game and you won’t learn if you don’t consciously focus on them (half flips are a good example actually). Also, there are some things you can really only learn in games (and not practice).

I don’t want to put words in Disco’s mouth but I’m pretty sure he was just saying that focusing on free play is valuable if getting good fast is the goal instead of getting good along the way. That’s how I look at it.

I join the GWJ and Noobs casual games for the social relaxed gameplay where I can essentially practice in a game like environment and not have toxic kids yelling in chat. I practice passing or small mechanics or whatever. I specifically joined GWJ because I was looking for a Rocket League group of adults.
