Civilization VI

I’m quite liking the look of all the new changes to be honest. Anything that makes maps and topography important is good in my book (eve if it can led to unbalanced starts at times) and the new resource mechanics also look like a positive improvement. I will look forward to picking it up.

And they just revealed the next leader is Eleanor of Aquitaine, who can used as a leader for both France and England. Should be interesting to see her in play.

Eleanor of Aquitaine first look

Eleanor of Aquitaine first look

that's really interesting

counting down the days!

Just watched the Dido Livestream yesterday and during it they do mention of a "play by cloud" multiplayer option. Sounds like a play by email system but where everything is hosted on their servers so there is no save passing going on.

Is it just me or is it weird they are hiding all these little goodies inside the Livestreams?

First Gathering Storm review I've seen

Kotaku's is pretty positive.

You spend most of a Gathering Storm game as the victim, helplessly watching on as the planet lashes out at your cities but towards the end of a game, as you reach the industrial era and beyond, the tables have turned and it’s you who is hurting the planet.

I'm not sure that exactly sounds like fun.

The beatings will continue until morale improves.

My thoughts exactly. It's going to take some convincing to make me buy this one.

A little too real, if you ask me...

I'm pretty sure that all those elements will be easy to toggle off in the game creation menu

Yeah, but there are other problems, too. The diplomacy stuff sounds great, but it requires an AI that is not dain bramaged. Maybe a mod will fix that someday.

The mod who achieves intelligent Civ AI will have doomed us all by triggering the robot apocalypse.

personally im excited about the disaster element of the new expansion, there's an interesting give and take element where the floods and volcanoes destroy whats in the tile, but leave an improved tile behind them

We've got a lot of tech folks in GWJ. Can't we get Google and Deep Mind to work on this? That seems like a good use of the time for one of the world's most elite AI teams.

Just let Deep Mind train on Gandhi games.
It will figure out the solution to climate change in no time.

Still excited to try the expansion. Got days off and everything, not specifically because of Civ, but it just made it even better.
There is really no way it wont disappoint though. Second expansions for Civ are supposed to fix everything.
Sadly sounds like what could be feared; adding new stuff without fixing the old.

Feeling a little hot under the collar? Try new Indian Nuclear Winter*tm*

I read through the review and came away feeling like the reviewer was more mixed on things. Pretty positive about the climate mechanic, wasn’t a fan of the political execution, didn’t feel the AI drawbacks of the existing game were addressed, and the game was starting to get overly complex.

I’m very interested to hear what everyone here will think about it. I’ll likely wait until I finish some other things before picking it up, but I’m excited about the expansion on the whole and hope it’s enjoyable.

I really think enjoying this game at this point comes down to expectations of what Civ does and doesn't do. The AI has never been all that good at playing its own game, and the changes that came about in Civ5 (one unit per tile, for example) I think kind of exposed that in a way Firaxis either can't address (too tough a nut to crack) or lacks the resources to. I doubt they're unaware of or ignoring it. I think they're just taking the most viable path they have by trying to make the act of playing it more fun and interesting in spite of the AI's failings.

Given that, you either enjoy it for what it does really well (increasingly the player vs. environment stuff) or it's probably not going to provide you with much value for your time. I've pretty much given up on the AI ever getting significantly better, and I love the way Civ6 uses things like districts to increase the focus on playing the board (map). To me, the addition of climate obstacles and making individual resources more important is a logical next step, and it gives me more to focus on than just what the AI is or isn't doing. I totally get if that's not a great sell for a lot of players, but I expect it'll work out just fine for me.

Weird to have a Civ expansion come out and not get it. I’m not sure what my price point will be.

I'm on the same boat, I found the current price of the expansion too high...waiting for some discounts

GreenManGaming has it for $32 which is closer to reasonable. If I loved Civ VI I would probably get it but under $30 is more tempting for me. This gets close.

I picked it up, but my wife will be playing it. She's been on a big Civ 6 kick the last several weeks, so this came out at the perfect time for her.

I always buy Firaxis games/expansions on release. They are probably my favorite developer. Most of the time, I don't get to play them on release, but just want to support them. I went to Firaxicon several years ago and the people just seemed happy and nice to be working there. Got to meet Sid and Jake Solomon too which was awesome.

I would be buying it right away, except that I literally don't have enough money at the moment. Bein' a gamer between jobs sucks.

Excited to try it out when I finally do have some spare cash though... or I could probably mooch it off a friend/family member for my upcoming birthday.

Base game patch notes are out. Looks like a good mix of AI improvements, UX improvements, and balance changes. I'll be curious to see if I notice the graphical tweaks. And improved turn times! All looks good at first glance.

I'm with Balthezor. I just wish they'd do another Firaxicon. Those were fun.

Yes. I would totally go again. My wife who is not a gamer at all, had a blast.

So awesome for Firaxis!

I picked it up from GMG but haven't had a chance to play it yet. Naturally there was a huge spike of work at my job that came out of nowhere to fill up the allotted Civ VI space.

I too do this and also was at Firaxicon back in 2014--I'm all about doing anything to let them continue to make new games and agree it would be awesome to go to another Firaxicon.

Played a little this AM--I am very intrigued about the Inca and plan to lean into their bonuses centered around settling near mountains. Though I personally think all of the new Civs have some interesting ideas and I'd like to give each a try.
