The thread for movies that aren't going to get their own thread but are still in theaters

Saw Mary, Queen of Scots last night and really enjoyed it. Really don’t know my British and and Scottish history well enough to verify accuracy, but it was a interesting story of two powerful women constantly being usurped by men.

I’d say it is worth watching just for Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie‘s performances.

I find it amusing that there's an Irish actor playing the Scot and an Australian playing the Briton.

Both of them have proven in previous movies that they are outstanding with accents!

Saw Bumblebee last night and it was...ok. I mean it certainly wasn't bad, and it is head and shoulders above the Michael Bay movies but it was just a "b" action movie to me. It lacked that excitement that makes me want to watch a movie again. I wish I didn't feel that way because I like the transformers and really wanted to love the movie.

One thing that really feel weird to me was the scene where the boy side kick took off his shirt so she could wrap it around her eyes. It was just...out of place and dumb. It struck me as something that should have been on the cutting room floor that in the final cut.

My wife got upset at me because I called it a robot romantic comedy. It's basically that format with some fighting mixed in. Which is weird. Not saying it's a bad movie, it sure couldn't get much worse than the last couple they pumped out, but it just feels off. Unfortunately I think it's just really insanely hard to write any kind of meaningful story based on a set of characters that were designed almost solely to be impulse buys for children.

maybe a bit late, but re Spiderverse, I really like Common Sense Media's criteria for age appropriateness in general. It's been a good barometer for my 4yo.

We saw Wall-e and Frozen with her. CSM recommends 5+ years and I could tell my daughter struggled with some concepts even after repeated viewing.

Saw Mary Poppins Returns today. It was utterly charming, well-written and acted, but with sadly forgettable songs. Like, how do you have Lin-Manuel Miranda in your movie and not have him write the songs?!

Also, one of the actors voiced Paddington in the two recent movies and that's all I heard whenever he spoke. Not a bad thing though.

I thought the same thing! It may be a bit of rose colored glasses thing but I thought the songs were probably the worst part of it. Great acting though etc etc

Well hey, they'll likely get another chance to please you all because Disney. I can't wait for the spin off solo movies and streaming shows on Disney Plus. The MPCU is going to be tight!

I may end up taking the kids to see this

The Kid Who Would Be King Is a Solid, Feel-Good Adventure Film

If I were 10 years old, The Kid Who Would Be King would be my favorite movie. I’d watch it every day, twice on Sunday, run wild with a fake sword, and pretend to save the world with my friends. As an adult, the film didn’t have quite that impact on me but it’s easy to recognize its earnest joyfulness that taps into those childlike feelings. For better or worse, it feels like a movie from another time.

It totally feels like 3 Ninjas, Kid in King Author's Court, and other similar kid movies of my youth.
I guarantee my son will love this.

I'm not sure when exactly it stopped, but I remember I loved 3 Ninjas. Now I can't even get through the trailer.

Saw Glass today and really liked it. I loved the wrap it did on Unbreakable/Split. It just released so I won’t even mention anything spoilery, but I thought it was a perfect Shyamalan trilogy-capstone.

Just seen bumblebee which was horrible. Not one of the robots was a racist representation of anything. Why wasn't Bassett's character played like a sassy black woman. Then we have a girl in this movie and vehicles but she never leans on vehicles in a sexual manner. What the hell is this not a transformer movies? That girl need to bent over a bike. Hey she's 18 so it is ok. I can't believe we get a transformers movie that hates women so much that it doesn't show how sexy they can be.

Where was the damn product placement? I need to know what type of beer to buy while american flags are waving in the background. What do they want me to drink water?

Then there was the action. I could actually see what was going on and make out which transformer was which. That isn't how transformers work.. They are robots in disguise so I shouldn't be able to tell what from the other.

Who ever made this trash obviously spent to much time watching the original cartoon. We moved on from G1. The Bay set us down a better path that poops on G1. Can you believe that had classic G1 versions of transformers and one of them was a girl with speaking lines. Transformers are dudes unless they can transform into sexy women. This is another reason Basset was all wrong for this movie.

Joking of coarse. I really hope they do a movie with less humans or even all transformers. I'm glad to get a good transformers movie after how horrible the last few were.

Yeap. Also liked it.
I thought it was a prequel, but the ending made it feel like it's a reboot. I like the first one, but I don't mind this at all.

Yeah it was odd. They made references to the other movies but it can't take place in the same time line. I guess it doesn't matter since I doubt anyone cares. I think what they were doing is leaving the door open for Bay to come back if bumblebee doesn't do as well and it looks like it wont make as much as bay movies. Looks like this is going to be another Dredd situation.

I love Baron of Hell's movie reviews. You should totally do some YouTube videos. Just super short reviews like that one.

Just caught Spider-Verse, finally. Holy crap, that movie is awesome. Strongest possible recommendation. I think I liked it better than the first Avengers.

Above and beyond the plotline, the animation is ridiculously good. I've never seen anything like it. It's this weird mix of cel shading and exaggerated anatomy, yet with such amazingly realistic movement that you forget it's not real. But then sometimes they fall into 'comic book mode' with floating dialog boxes and actual frames on the screen and everything. It's paced at a mile a minute, flipping around between modes and takes and shots, but it's never confusing. It's always slow enough that you can keep up, but it switches styles effortlessly. This is grandmaster-level animation, and I think people will be studying it for years and years.

When I first heard about the movie, I remember thinking that it was really odd to have a Hispanic Spider-Man, but then shrugged and figured, "well, why the hell not? It's a fictional character. Why can't they play, too?" And did they ever deliver.

In three words: Wow. Go see.

I don't know why but this one line is stuck in my head:
"My enemies call me that"
Well and of course: "Harsh origin story"

One part I missed from the origin story montage was that Spider-Ham is a spider bitten by a radioactive pig. That completely made my day when I learned that.

I went to see They Shall Not Grow Old over the weekend, in 3D, and it was god damn amazing.

You have never seen anything like 100-year-old footage from World War I cleaned up, colorized, and turned three dimensional in a theater before. They did an unbelievably good job with all of it. And it's not just the visual quality - the sound is amazing, the stories they told are memorable, and the history is incredible. In some parts you feel like you are right there in the trenches with the soldiers. The narration is 100% voices from actual veterans of the war, from interviews they did in the 60s and 70s. My wife and I are considering going back and seeing it a second time.

If you stay after the credits they show a 20-30 minute short with Peter Jackson talking about the background of the documentary and some details on how they made it. All of it is well worth your time.

YES! I saw it in 2D, but otherwise, the same experience - it had a deeply humanist message that had me reflecting on the sanitized ultraviolence in media today.

Really was awesome how they used the 3D. It's worth checking out if you have the chance. I only saw the 3D version because it was all our theater offered when we saw it a few months ago. It was totally worth it.

I read that he is going to do a Beatles documentary next, with old film footage, and found footage, I assume. After this, I can't wait to see it.

Another impressive thing is that they didn't just do this for the footage they used in the film. They cleaned up (and I think also colorized) all 100 hours of footage they were given from the Imperial War Museum's archive.

Funny enough I did too. That is great.

Seen The Hate U Give and If Beale Street Could Talk. Not back to back I got these two movie confused and seen the first a long time ago and Beale just now. Both great movies. Beale Street is black love story which you don't see much of. Also it isn't geared only for women. Didn't end like I thought it would. The high praise the actors are getting is on point.

This I didn't know! I really hope they release more docs with it, maybe telling some of the other stories, like the air battles or especially the what the medical teams dealt with. If they do a similar thing with the Beatles footage I'll definitely be there to see that one too. It's such a great way to see and learn about these historical events.

I remember a series (6 episodes I think) where they also colourised black and white film. Can't remember if it was about WW1 or WW2. The colourisation effect definitely wasn't as good.

Regarding Spider verse, how much does one need to care about Spiderman? To be honest I do not like superhero movies, but this one looks like they animated key color frames and I kind of want to see the visuals.

Don't really need to know more than base Spiderman stuff. Not even. Just go enjoy it.

I'm not into Spiderman AT ALL and I loved it.

I know very little about Spiderman beyond radioactive spider/uncle ben and enjoyed it a ton.

Good to know, thank you
