Apex Legends - Catch All

I am home and downloading!

This is probably the first time that I started a download, then paused and canceled it after seeing more about the game.

Stuck at 38% downloading with 0h 0m remaining. Anyone else?

My download flew - unlike Anthem on Saturday. I was even able to play at 70% before the hd textures finished.

Played two (very) quick rounds. It’s Battle Royale alright. Gonna take a while to learn the map, weapons, etc but at first blush it’s pretty fun.

Runs buttery smooth and very pretty too.

I’m paladintom on Origin if anyone wants to give it a go together later.

Seems to be squad only right now.

Hopefully they only did this for a short time to push folks into one queue and make sure they fire quickly.

Speaking of which, it's ridiculous that some games (Overwatch) only let you queue for one game type. I much prefer the Rocket League model of queueing for more than one and letting the computers work it out. Doing it the Overwatch way means queues have smaller populations and fire more slowly.

So, uh, apparently there's no wallrunning, I hear? Slide/mantel but no real parkour like in the main series TF games?

To me there are three hallmarks that make Titanfall gameplay what it is, distinct from other shooters:

1. Titans
2. Parkour
3. Mobs of MOBA-esque AI cannon fodder roaming the map

So this game is 0 for 3?

Like, they had a chance here to really set themselves apart from other BR games by incorporating the stuff that made Titanfall... Titanfall... and then they didn't use ANY of it?

To be fair, they didn't call it Titanfall.

And it's definitely different enough to the other BRs out there.

I am EdgarNewt in Origin and will be on tonight after 9:15 pm PT or so. Friend me up!

Maverickzy on origin. Just got my first death.

Got a few kills, then I went solo and tried avoiding everyone. Lasted 18 minutes. That was pretty tense.

I’ve not really payed any BR before, but this is really fun so far.

So my only experience so far with Battle Royale has been Geneshift and Super Animal Royale, which were really fast and fun.

I just did one Apex match and it just went on and on FOREVER. Is this typical of more traditional Battle Royale games?

Can you define "forever"?

Well, for Geneshift a match is maybe three minutes, and for Super Animal Royale it's maybe five.

This one was well, well over that. It just felt like such a slog.

From what I’ve seen this seems quick for battle royal games.

I’ll be on the discord tonight if anybody wants to group up.

Yeah, if five minutes feels good, most of the Battle Royale games won't be great I think. A PUBG match (if you survive) can be over half an hour. Fornite is a bit quicker? But not five minutes by a long shot.

I've been wondering if Apex lasts longer with a bit of a respawn possibility built in there.

Most BR games are either 30 seconds to 30 minutes.

Lasted 18 minutes... again. Got killed. Again.

I'm having a blast with this game so far!

I don't think battle royale games are for me. Twenty minutes of sneaking around and then killed in five seconds. I don't have time for this kind of fun.

Character design is weak. None of these characters are visually appealing even looking at legendary skins. The gunplay however is very satisfying and I feel right back at home after many hours of TF2. The forced teamplay actually works well since I always have played solo BR games in the past, but theres much more opportunity to stick around with revives. Only played two rounds, but won the second one, this is more fun than I anticipated, almost didnt even bother to check it out.

Try Super Animal Royale or Geneshift. Far quicker, and to me and maybe you, more fun.

This one feels so like a slog.

Neither of those are what would be considered traditional BR game. So not ones to measure other BR games too.

Played with my usual Fortnite/Overwatch crew and made #1 in the first evening of trying the game. I'm thinking GOTY already.

More seriously, the game just feels good, thanks to that Respawn pedigree. Moreover, I think there are a lot of elements to encourage team play (e.g. having one person decide where everyone lands; allowing revives in a limited way), so playing with randos isn't nearly as bad as other games. Personally, I'm pretty impressed...

Caustic is a fun class, the gas doesn't do a ton of damage but its great for ringing a defensive area and warning of a sneak attack. Was hoping for more of the Respawn parkour magic, but its engaging. Having a lot more fun than I have in PUBG or Forknife. Was carried to a win by a couple of folks in my first ever round in under 10 minutes, on the opposite end of the scale had a long defensive run with one of the Waypoint producers that lasted 28 minutes or so to place second, with the last 8 being an endless chain of reviving and dropping gas canisters around our one building fort

Okay, never played plunkbat, tried Fortnite but it wasn't for me. The class based aspect of this is quite appealing, movement looks awesome, although being built around squads is a bit intimidating, competitive FPS has never been my bag. I'll give it a bash.

Thanks Edgar and Ranalin for squading up for a few rounds. I'm out for a conference until Sunday night so will not be back until probably Monday at the earliest. I enjoyed the experience. See you in a week.

Do you not start out with a weapon?
Sorry I am a total BR newb. I lasted 1 minute 18 seconds and tried to punch someone when I realized I had no weapon!

First 5 minutes is a mad dash for the best (or any in the case of a contested landing) weapon, armor etc you can find, then incrementally improve as you find stuff.

I think I'd rather just play Titanfall 2. That game is fast.

I played through the tutorial this morning. I love the idea of this game, but I am not super excited. I would be more into it if it had more modes, because I just do not have the time to get good in a battle royale type game. Maybe if there are always people on Discord playing it will be fun whether I suck or not.
