PlayStation VR Catch-All

Same situation with a toddler. I only hook it up when he's asleep.

Got PSVR a week ago myself. Been playing some Tetris Effect and Wipeout Omega Collection. It's my first taste of VR and I'm just blown away!

Started Resident EVIIL today, but only got about 5 minutes in before my toddler woke up. Not sure how I feel about the "turn in 30°" increments, but it probably really does reduce the motion sickness.

I turned that off in RE7. You can switch to smooth turning.

I got about two hours with the headset after my wife went to bed. I started with VR Worlds, and did the luge thing and the London Heist. Luge was pretty meh, but the Heist one was very cool. I'm gonna show that one to my wife tomorrow. I tried the demo of Here They Lie, and I dunno what I think about that. They seemed to want some controls both on the controller and on the headset, and it seemed like they were fighting each other.

Then I switched over to Playroom. I didn't realize those games could be played with other people, so I'll also be trying those with the wife. I did the Robot Rescue one, and it was great. I'm super excited to play the full game now. Did the first level of Thumper, and hoo boy is that more intense in the headset than it is on the screen. Finally, I tried watching a movie in Netflix and playing a non-VR game. The low resolution is definitely noticeable with a movie, but less so with a game. Playing on a giant screen is pretty cool, and I might actually use that mode.

I'll need to mess about with my camera placement, I think. I've got it up on top of the TV, which is good for standing games because I've got an open area in front of the TV, but I have to bring a chair over for seated stuff. I'll have to see if I can move it somewhere closer so I can sit on the couch sometimes. Really wish it was USB so I could just use a regular extension cable.

Everyone should buy Astrobot right now. Holy. Crap. That is all.

Finished Moss last night. It was super adorable.

I need to figure out a better headphone setup. I've got two pairs of nice closed can headphones, but both have really long cords, and the nicer pair actually has a long, heavy, spiral cord. Not super ideal to have a heavy cord hanging off the back of your head. I'm going to try the included ear buds, but I doubt they're very good.

Anyone have a recommended headphones that go over the headset band and have a short cable? Ideally not earbuds, because those are slightly gross to share between people. Hopefully under fifty bucks. I'm keeping an eye on the Mantis PSVR-only ones and the Turtle Beach Stealth 350vrs, but other options are good.

I got the Stealth 350vrs for Christmas. They're very nice for the price. The cable that comes with is a couple feet long, but it's also detachable, so I ordered a shorter one to use with the PSVR. Looks like they're $60 on Amazon, so not too far above your price range.

I have this headset and it fits over the PSVR no problem.

Similarly, I own this one as it was the first headset released that was designed with PSVR in mind. You can probably find it cheaper than MSRP since it released a while ago. I haven't VR-ed in a while, but I use the headset quite a bit normally, over my other PlayStation headset, because of how comfortable it is.

This looks like a cool VR puzzler. Out now on PSVR $14.99. Probably grab this for the weekend.

What I've read of this sounds very promising, but it's worth noting that it's supposed to be very short. Like maybe an hour or two to complete.

I'll probably wait for a sale, since I still have quite a few PSVR games on my drive that I haven't had time to try.

Anyone played Dino Frontier? It looks very good, but I'm not sure how it plays or how long it is.

There's a demo for Dino Frontier. It's gorgeous, charming, and possibly the best use of the Moves hands-down (is that a pun?). I've only played the demo, but I'm sure I'll buy it when I've whittled down my PSVR backlog. What I've heard is that the full game is very good while it lasts, which is not very long. Which seems great to me - I think the "leave them wanting more" approach is always better than the "leave them wishing it had ended hours ago" one.

Tagging the thread. I'm would like to get PSVR in the next month or so but I realize I just missed out on some really good bundle deals.

I'm not sure about the next month or so, but I'm sure those deals will be back before too long. They seem to have helped them move quite a few units.

I can probably keep an eye out for deals until April. I have some vacation time then.

About how often does the bundle cycle turn over? It seems like there's a package of hardware (including move controllers,) one AAA game, and one indie every so often. I'm interested in picking up the set but don't want to do it when Borderlands is in the bundle. Gearbox have worn out their welcome.

Unfortunately, I don't know if there's much of a predictable cycle right now. There were $200 bundles with Astro Bot and Moss and $250 bundles with Superhot, Creed, and Move controllers on and off between mid-November and Christmas. I wouldn't be surprised to see something similar return in the first half of 2019, but that's pure speculation on my part.

Thumper in VR is really something. That is all.

Last night I started Moss. My 15 minute peek turned into a 100 minute "oh crud, I'm gonna be so tired again at work, why do I do this to myself??" dabble.

That game is gorgeous!

RE7 is tempting at half price but I’m such a chicken, don’t know if I could handle it!

It's really good. It's a tough one, but boy is it good.

To probably-unnecessarily clarify: it's not tough in terms of difficulty (it's actually easier to aim in VR, and there's an Easy mode), but it's 10x scarier in VR than the flat-screen version. Even that wears off over time, though; by the end you're pretty calm about dispatching monsters that would have left you a gibbering wreck early on.

It's definitely one of the standout PSVR experiences, though - I'm astonished that Capcom hasn't released a PC VR version.

Huh, this was unexpected...

Movies remade as video games? I can get on board with this.

It's actually meant to be a sequel. On the scale of video-game-movie-sequels, I doubt it will hit the scale near Alien: Isolation, but I can at least hope for Ghostbusters: The Video Game, maybe? I honestly expect it to hit the level of Back to the Future: The Game... so if it's anything better than that I'll be pleased.

I didn't consider myself much of chicken prior to RE7 VR but I couldn't enter the house, no matter how hard I tried, just couldn't enter the deep black behind the door, from the sunshine on the porch.

Yeah if that is too much for you then you really shouldn't play it.

Wife surprised me last night with a belated Valentine's Day gift; she got me a pair of Move controllers. After giving them a little while to charge, I hooked everything up and bought Beat Saber from the PS Store. I got through the tutorial and the first 30 seconds of the first song before the charge ran out, but I'm excited to do some more tonight.

My 6 yr old son is an insane Star Wars fan; his room is practically a shrine to all things Star Wars. I haven't let him try my PSVR headset - in fact, the kids are always in bed when I pull it out for safety and parental supervision reasons - but I'm thinking about giving him a short introduction this evening.

Try Dino Rancher. It's on one of the demo disc's, and the controls feel amazing. I feel you on the kids thing. VR is super incompatible with kids unless you have someone to watch them while you're in there.

I just finished off Torn the other day. It was pretty good, though I had two or three crashes, and the "grab and turn door knob" gesture was way too hard to pull off. I think Xing might be up next.

As a former Rock Band Drummer, Beat Saber was an absolute blast last night. My wife took video to nerd-shame me to her friends.

BACKFIRE.

They all said I looked like a dork (it's true, I did - she showed me the video and I looked like a 5-year old special needs kid throwing a temper tantrum), but they all said it also looked awesome. My sister-in-law is a huge Star Wars/comic book geek and I'm pretty sure she's out buying stock in PSVR and Beat Saber as I type.

I wasn't able to start it up until well after the kids bedtime. So, my son didn't get an intro yet and since I have to work late today, probably won't tonight either. I'm looking forward to this weekend - I'm sure he's going to love it. I'll have to check into Dino Rancher too.

Side note: it was decent exercise. I played through the first 15 songs or so and was sweating my happy ass off.

Weekend update: My nerd-shaming wife is now hooked and asked me to show her how to set it all up when I'm not home. Who's the nerd now?!

Monday update: I went home after work last night, ate some dinner, and jumped into the "Commercial Pumping" song - my personal favorite - on Expert+ at 50% speed training mode. Built up to where I was fairly comfortable and able to pass at 70%.

At 80%, the combination of speed and slices alternating between combos of 1, 2, or 4 per arm/color starts getting into realm of insane, silly fun. After an hour and a half, I was sweating and breathing like I just finished a world record marathon. This morning, my back, shoulders, and neck are a bit angry.

...so, I'm stopping at the sporting goods store on my way home to get a pair of weighted gloves and possibly some ankle weights before I run home and do it again. The goal tonight is to get to where I can reliably pass 80% and hopefully start working on 90%. Here's hoping I'm able to get out of bed without divine intervention tomorrow morning.
