Hidden Gems of Netflix's Watch Instantly

Titans is a little uneven and having gone the Daredevil route doesn’t pull its punches. Given it’s subject matter and characters though I guess it shouldnt be.

There was enough in the first episode to keep me interested, I just hope it settles down a little and grows into its skin.

I finally finished Castlevania Season Two today. It may have been a little slow for a bit, but those last few episodes with well worth the wait. I thought the action was amazing, I think Sypha's a great character, and there were some gorgeous shots in there as well. I enjoyed season one, buy I'm a much bigger fan at the end of season two.

My wife and I also watch Fyre this evening. Wow! That was some compelling viewing! We weren't familiar with the story (I guess it didn't get much coverage in Ireland) so we were shocked by how things played out. Really sad seeing how people were effected at the end too.

Note that there’s a separate documentary or such about the Fyre Festival on Hulu. I have watched neither but I take that one to be a little more focused on the clistershank of an event it was. Just impressions from cultural diffusion.

There was a NPR report about both of these. It seems from a journalistic standpoint both are compromised. Netflix's producers are tied to the festival somehow and the Hulu one paid for their big interview.

If there's a bias in the Netflix one then I'd have to assume it's against the whole thing. I can't imagine the documentary I saw was biased in favour of Fyre or its organisers.

I watched the Netflix one and it sure felt like everyone was saying boy we sure were manipulated too. I believe some of the ground level people but higher ups sounded like they were trying to clear their names.

Some of the video is still pretty damning for more people than just Billy. Those conference calls made my skin crawl.

Even though I think they were holding back info to protect themselves I feel this is worth the watch to see how social media and influencers are being used to manipulate people.

Never heard of this Fyre. I guess, like Stevintendo, it's from being based in Ireland. This shall sort my viewing out for tonight.

We watched the Hulu one last night, and it was pretty good. And while they paid Billy McFarland for the interview, it played really well. He did not want to be there answering their questions, and the doc cutting back to this interview throuout played more like watching this asshole get abused. He does not come off well, at all.

Will probably watch the Netflix one soon. We watched trailer for each and went with the Hulu one, which we found to be pretty interesting, as it focused on the con man way more than the Schadenfreude of watching rich 20 somethings suffer.

There was also quite a bit about this influencer culture that social media has created. That might have been the most interesting part, to me.

Watched the Netflix version of the Fyre doc tonight, and though it was a nice companion to the Hulu one. Watching both fills in the holes. Basically, each of them expanded on different aspects of the story.

We found both of them done well enough to enjoy watching the dumpster fyre. And in the end, I think the real take away is just how shallow and awful social media really is. So many people were duped because influencers are conditioned to only show how awesome something they are involved in really is. It just fed on itself.

Aye. Fyre showed social media in its truest form. People choosing to show cropped shots and cherry picked moments with captions generated from a place of personal gain. Can I monetize this? Bolster my image? Generate fame? Honesty need not come into it. Deception is fine.

The organizers, each of them, with their blinkers on to continually look away from the truth and soldier on with the pipe dream. They each played their part as an enabler by keeping a lid on the truth.

The influencers in ways were almost as disgusting with their disregard for what they were attaching their name to, suggesting others should become a part of this or that on their say so. Again. Money. Fame. Image. Too focused on these hollow aspirations before sounding out if it has a solid foundation, and whom is behind it.

I mean, I get the Netflix version had them saying occasionally that the FCC should force people to put #Advertisement next to their paid-for posts and certainly the whole Fyre thing was pushed via social media, but scams like that have been going on since time immemorial. Fyre exemplified a new vector for that chicanery but it's hardly the first time a bunch of people got duped out of their money by some slick marketing and well-placed lies.

Season 2 of star trek: discovery is up on Netflix in the UK now. I will report back when I’ve got around to watching it.

My daughter loved Carmen Sandiego - not something I was previously aware of and had to look up on Wikipedia - I’m far too old.

First episode was pretty good. Certainly looking forward to second episode which is out tomorrow.

I liked the netflix version, but honestly the whole thing kind of pales to The Smartest Guys in the Room which IMO is the essential scam doc.

The interesting thing is not that that people got scammed, but the culture that allowed so many people to help make it happen, and how social media not only manipulated the scammees, but how social media blinded the scammers to what was really going on.

It’s an interesting story.

I feel like the scammers knew exactly what was going on... Unless you're not referring to McFarland?

Really talking about the staff.

I only have time for one doc about it; which should I watch? I have both Netflix and Hulu.

Smartest Guys in the Room

The Wolf of Wall Street

RBG on Hulu.

Really enjoyed the first episode of season 2 of Discovery. Sonequa Martin Green is fantastic as Michael Burnham, but the auppprting cast is equally excellent and, although season 2 has made this show properly ‘Star Trek’, it still has enough edge from the previous series to hold it all together. Looking forward to the next episode!

Titans is also much more enjoyable than I was expecting. It’s certainly tough in places but each character - with the possible exception of Ryan Potter’s beast boy so far - has a recognisable character arc and it all moves along at a fair pace.

There is however one issue I have with it - and maybe more generally - is that sexual violence against Women and children needs to stop being a prime motivator for Major protagonists in shows. It’s getting out of control I feel where everything you watch has to invole rape or sexual assault, or childhood abuse as the motive. It’s just getting out of hand, shows a complete lack of imagination from screen writers and starts to lessen the devastating impact those events have on people in real life a none of whom are going to develop superhuman abilities with which to take vengeance.

Maybe I’m over reacting but Titans is really overdoing it, especially for relatively minor side characters.

For a number of boring reasons I ended up essentially skipping two nights' sleep this week, which meant that I binged Haunting of Hill House and She-Ra back to back. I really enjoyed both shows. I think that binging Hill House on my own, in the dark, using headphones, through the early hours of the morning was either a genius or a terrible idea, and I also think that watching the two shows in that order was a good call.

I was really impressed with how much heart there is in Hill House. For a haunted house show it has a lot of depth. I really enjoyed getting to know all the characters, and I found their stories to be surprisingly real and quite sad, in spite of all the haunted house stuff.

She-Ra is an incredibly positive show, and I loved it. I never paid much attention to the character before, in spite of being a fan of He-Man as a kid. This version is badass though. I don't know what it is about the animation, but even though I thought it looked awful in stills, I actually really liked it in motion. And I don't think I've ever thought this before, but I wish they'd shown the full "transformation animation" every time, cause it's really cool. Also, I need to get myself a friend like Bow. I think everyone should have a friend like Bow...and Scorpia.

The just announced today that She-Ra is getting a second season on April 26.

Woohoo!

Just watched the Netflix Fyre doc and wasn't a fan of how it seemed to basically pin all responsibility on Billy. Not saying he's a great guy or anything, but the fact is that if so many other people weren't complacent with what was going on, he wouldn't have gotten nearly as far as he did. It seemed to me that there were a LOT of lousy people involved that should be sitting in a jail cell.

Clearly Netflix doesn't know me as it has not recommended me a nice hot cup of Black Dynamite! You're on my sh*tlist now, Netflix.
