Kotaku posted a story about the crappy relationship decisions in the new DLC. The director offered an apology, and a trophy will be renamed.

While this hasn't soured me on the game as a whole, it definitely will keep me from going back to play the DLC anytime soon.

Yeah, the apology was not well received on the official forums.

"Queer people don't exist to be your damn learning experience."

And that person is right. After all the pre-release inclusivity talk it is just galling that they just didn't bother to follow through in the DLC. Several messages from players have described several different ways they could have told the same story and maintained player choice.

Of course there are plenty of nincompoops wondering what the big deal is. I'm actually surprised at the number of patient replies to them from queer folks and allies. Usually these things just turn into shouting matches as the bigots double down on their rabble rousing.

Oh, I completely agree. I had zero issues running the game, it was super convenient. The only thing I didn't like was that it didn't support 21:9. Because of that, I didn't play as much as I wanted as I wanted to wait for the full experience in glorious ultra widescreen.

In a recent interview with Eurogamer Spain, the narrative director of Assassin's Creed mentioned that while they have their own internal roadmap, they often consult the fan-created Assassin's Creed Wiki for story details. The series writers are also beholden to the Ubisoft corporate brand management for how to flesh out the modern day elements of the story, since the series spans mulitple media.

The second part makes sense, because obviously Ubisoft wants some level consistency across games, comics, movies, and books. I'm a bit surprised that the company doesn't have an individual or team of experts to track the now twelve year old story. They sometimes meet with a group of fans called the "Mentor's Guild" for fact-checking. The head editor of the AC wiki is part of the Mentor's Guild. Unfortunately Ubisoft often ignores Mentor's Guild input.

The Eurogamer article (en español).

Several years ago there was an article about a group within Ubisoft to help coordinate narrative and storytelling techniques across multiple media. It was explained as also being somewhat optional for studios within the company to take advantage of it. Perhaps that's leading to these issues, though it sounds like an interesting idea. Certainly Far Cry 5 has had its own series of narrative controversies in the last year, and now this thing with AC: Odyssey.

Having finished the game, I'm continually surprised Ubisoft hasn't ditched the overarching modern day mythology yet. They've cut down on it, but the narrative stuff in Odyssey would have been vastly improved without the intrusions from the frankly incomprehensible modern day stuff, and just been a romp through mythological Greece.

This DLC brouhaha could've been completely avoided if they hadn't felt the need to tick some daft meta-narrative box about *sigh* magic bloodlines. (They should also be taken aside for a strongly worded conversation about going to that particular well.)

Just do what Far Cry does and have the gameplay be the unifying thing.

Ahh, I see. So anyone who doesn’t fall in line with your thinking and are not “outraged” by this are “nincompoops” and “bigots”. Great job stereotyping there, bucko! I can tell you one thing after having a gay best friend for over 30 years, they don’t need or want people like you to fight their battles for them. In fact, to hear my friend put it, he finds people like you more annoying than the “nincompoops” and “bigots”, go figure eh?

well...your one (presumably white? presumably cis? ...just taking a stab in the dark) gay friend must be very special indeed if he can speak for the entire broad range of LGBTQ folks that are out there.

Personally, I and many more lgbtq people I know, would be quite happy for the het/cis folks to do some of the heavy f*cking lifting in sorting out their own bigoted sh*t for once. Because it's incredibly f*cking tiring trying to do it on our own.

Just want to point out that it appears you seem to be fighting a battle here for someone not yourself. Not sure if that was your intention, but I found this interesting.

First, I like that you added bigots to this, because that's not what Badken said and it makes it more clear that your subconscious recognized that it's wrong. Second, this is what you want to defend, of all the things in this world you want to tell people who are upset that ONCE AGAIN they're being underrepresented and told that their preferences are not the correct 'heroic story' that getting upset is no big deal and the gay friend that YOU ARE SPEAKING FOR thinks it's no big deal. Hey man, he doesn't need or want people like you fighting his battles.

If someone says "I'm offended" and your reaction is to dismiss that, maybe you're the problem.

So with project Stream ended, I am really hoping the saved game files transfer right. If it doesn't I will not want to pour into it another 20 hours to get where I am currently. Also depending on how long it takes for them to send out the emails with the game that may take me off of wanting to play with it, my attention span is a fickle thing. Really none of that is important because I am complaining about a free game.

I apparently bypassed part of the main quest in Chapter 3 by stumbling across Elpenor in some ruins while doing side quests and exploring the map. I thought it was cool they let you do that. I'm very much a fan of this less directed form of Assassin's Creed game that started with Origins, even if I still feel a pang of nostalgia for the previous style of game.

I now have a giant wall of cultists to hunt down. This game is so big.

Did you really pull the equivalent to the "I have a black friend who says the real problem is not white people being racist but that black people wont let Slavery go"??

I thought it was parody...

Wow, came into this thread expecting talk of new DLC, or folks getting their game via the Project Steam thing.

Boy was I wrong.

Just for reference, here is a message I posted on the official forum (I know, never visit the official forum). It's a reply to a stream of vitriolic posts from... well, I'll avoid calling them what I think they are... on the subject of how people who spent 100 hours having fun with a gay character shouldn't care about the Gay Conversion Therapy DLC.

So many people in this thread are full of it. Your sexuality doesn't affect gameplay?

I guarandamntee you that if the game required the character to have a homosexual romance that the torches and pitchforks would be flying.

More importantly, statements like "your sexuality doesn't affect gameplay" betray a complete lack of empathy towards non-heterosexual players. It is nothing short of amazing when a game appears that allows someone who is not a heterosexual white male to be a hero. A game is so much more satifying when you can identify with the protagonist. And before anyone says "it wouldn't bother me if I had to play a gay black woman in a video game," that is not the point. If 99% of games featured gay black women as protagonists, it would affect you.

Try to take a nanosecond to appreciate what it means to someone who almost never sees someone they can identify with in a video game suddenly find a video game with a hero they can identify with, that the creators specifically stated was a goal of their design, and then to have that yanked out from under them.

You'd be frustrated too.

Yeah, I probably should have left out that first sentence, but it emphasizes my frustration. BTW, this message got a number of thumbs ups, an encouraging reply from a gay guy, and I got a couple of PMs thanking me. I'm not bringing that up to pat myself on the back, just pointing out that there were some queer folks on that board who were happy to read my POV.

I don't know if this is your intent, but this comes across as dismissive of the issues. I'm glad the discussion is taking place.

Welcome to 2019. I'm taking any attack on marginalized groups at face value.

Just trying to add a bit of levity and sadly failing, sorry. Not trying to be dismissive.

It is a bit frustrating to come into the game thread and see a bunch of name calling and individually directed anger when yes people are coming to discuss the game and dlc. It might be best if it was continued over in a D&D thread.

Have the discussion here or there, but name calling and lashing out should not be the norm for us.

Bolded for the hypocritical portion.

Don't worry it will be moved to D&D by moderation eventually. GWJ is a safe place. If you're CIS Het White Male Christian that is.

Just because the topic isn't relevant to you, doesn't mean that it needs to go somewhere else. IT IS a discussion about the DLC and the ramifications of the decision that the developers made to exclude non-straight people. At this point there's nothing to debate, they took away players identity and that's a sh*tty thing to do. To dismiss it or try to redirect the conversation elsewhere is a waste of everyone's time but yet that keeps happening on this forum.

Wow, sorry I caused a ruckus you guys.

I'm about 25 hours in now and am loving this game so much.

I think this is an extremely unpopular opinion, but I kind of love the out-of-world stuff that I've seen so far. I just had my second contact with the outside world, the first true opportunity to learn about the metastory, and I thought it was interesting. I like Layla as a character, and unlike in Origins, the amount of emails, voice recordings, and other notes on her computer was perfect. It looked a little overwhelming, but when I decided to sit down and read it, it flowed really well and made me interested in the cast of characters on the team. I guess I'll see where it goes from here, but so far I'm excited to see more of it.

The structure of this game is also working great for me right now. I've had several recent sequences where the next general story objective has three sub-tiers of quests associated with it, and after completing each of those, you can then advance the larger story beat. As I most often find myself with ~1.5 - 2 hours of gaming time at a chunk, it just works perfectly for me, and gives me a really nice balance between gameplay and story. I keep planning to spend time with other games on my to-play list, but then I just end up playing Odyssey.

I've definitely found Odyssey to be good when I'm in the mood for a relatively frictionless experience. I know I can do a quest, or hunt a target, or just clear out a map icon, depending on how much time I have and what I'm in the mood for. Of the various open world games I'm juggling at the moment, it's the easiest to sink into.

About the out-of-world stuff

Spoiler:

There is a small payoff for the inworld/outofworld stuff that happens if you finish the Atlantis quest line. It seems to indicate that there will be more to come in a follow up game. I don't know how much it ties into the other games in the series though

They have stated that the save game will transfer over.

Well. "Payoff". It just made me more annoyed with the meta story.

This was actually my very first AC game. I'd heard about the meta-story, though I've never known anything about it. I didn't like it at all, honestly. Not sure why it's necessary, beyond something to tie all the games together. Every time I was drawn out into it, I just wanted to get it over with as quickly as possible.

As a follow up to the recent issues with the DLC, they've announced that they're making changes to a cutscene and some dialogue to reflect better the relationships.

It's not my place to say whether all is forgiven, but I personally am glad to see they took the criticism and did something about it instead of just shrugging it off.
