Hori D-pad Joycon

Is that the one that drains batteries, and/or causes the Switch to over-heat, warp and/or brick?

(It sounds like I'm making a joke, but honestly I just haven't looked into this in a while so I might be thinking of a different one.)

Yep.

Think the better option were the custom joycon shells that had D-Pads in place of the buttons. I think someone here even used one and reviewed it back in the fall.

Also on Amazon, and I think with the tools to unscrew the old covers. EDIT: It looks like they have a whole selection of just the left ones with d-pad now for half price, so you can do that if you don't mind mismatched colors.

The custom joycon shells look nice, that's a mod I might want to do.

Anyone use a shell that keeps the console and Joycons held together? I hate how flimsy they feel. Mega bonus points if the console can still be put in the dock with the shell on.

I use the Satisfy grip and I really like it. Can’t dock with the grip, but super easy to slide on and off.

I just got all the Star Coins in Soda Jungle...that was tough! I think a couple of those Coins were signalling that this game's about to get a lot harder.

On the plus side, Painted Swampland is my favourite level so far. It's gorgeous! Very creative aesthetic.

You're giving up on those mega bonus points pretty quickly there Antichulius...

(I have a problem.)

I’m also not getting all the NSMBU star coins.

You're effectively playing on hard already. The coins are a gameplay-driven way for players to tailor the game's difficulty to their particular level of interest. If difficulty in games is like spice in food, the star coins are the bottle of Sriracha on the table. Add as much or as little as you'd like.

Is the game understood to be harder than other entries in the series?

As far as strategy goes in NSMB2 I personally would double back and get harder coins when I had lives to spare or better power ups. I got all the star coins and did every flag as Mario in NSMB2. I just did it over time.

I'm not familiar with this "Sriracha" that you speak of, but the way you're using the word suggests to me that it's a tasty beverage which you have no option but to drink with every meal.

Sriracha is a hot sauce made with Thai chilies. Some restaurants in the States have a bottle of it (or Tabasco sauce, which is similar) on the table so that you can add more spiciness to your meal if you'd like.

Has anyone else played This Is The Police? I rather like it. Works great as a portable game. A light sim with mechanics I can't say I have seen in another game. Good voice acting. Interesting adult story that evokes something like True Detective.

I have to say, though, that the controls are so bizarre. It's like the designer hated the face buttons or something. Everything is shoulder buttons and stick clicks. I should check if there is a remap.

It's a good pick-up for 30$ (although I think it was just 2$ on steam!)

I have seen the promised land and its name is Celeste and Cuphead.
New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe falls short.
The levels are inventive and well done, truly Nintendo at its best. The bosses are creative, again Nintendo giving great care to create quality. The controls and physics are sh*t.
Sometimes this is relatively speaking. Combining running and jumping is fine, when maneuvering within tight constraints, it is not relatively speaking.

I've come here to publicly bear my shame. I believe that I have failed to get every Star Coin in every level... I managed to get them all up to, and including, beating Bowser, (So my save file has three Stars), and I even got them all in the first level after that, but I think this is as far as I can go... These last few levels are tough!

I've had a great time though, NSMBUD was a really good first big buy of 2019!

I played it on PC and enjoyed it for pretty much the same reasons. I didnt get all the way through though. There's a sequel on PC (that I haven't tried). I imagine if the Switch version of the first one does well it will come too.

On PC you have to play through the whole game to unlock a sort of 'endless' management only mode. Is that still true on Switch?

I have it, but for PS4. I haven't managed to dip in yet, but it must have done well enough to warrant a sequel, as I saw that on the store the other day. Glad to hear it works well in a portable environment, because if I like it I will definitely go the Switch route.

This Is The Police II is already out on switch.

I've been playing through Fairune 2 the last few days. I'm playing on 3DS, but the game is available on the Switch and runs identically.

There was recently a "best game no one's ever heard of" thread, and I feel like Fairune and its sequel would be my contenders in that discussion. The best elevator pitch I can make for them is that they're like A Link to the Past if you kept all the same environmental puzzles, interlinking world, and dungeon overworld/underworld dichotomy, but stripped most of the combat out.

In Fairune, combat is incredibly simplistic: you run into enemies to kill them, and you only take damage from enemies that are higher level than you. Enemies end up being used a lot like they are in Zelda: as gateways and indicators that you might be looking in the wrong place. And by removing so much of the combat focus, the puzzles are deeper and the environment more interesting to navigate.

They're cheap (both games are included in a bundle on Switch for $10, plus one other game that I haven't played) and short (3 hours each?) If that elevator pitch sounds at all appealing, take one for a spin.

Also, Super Mario Party is legit pretty fun. My wife and I have been playing it in two-player mode and really enjoying it.

It also has the most clever use of HD rumble that I've seen so far: when it's your turn, the HD rumble in the Joycon plays a little tune to alert you. I'm not sure I would ever have thought to try to use the HD rumble to make music.

I'd like to echo Clockwork on this. I have the Switch Collection and I really enjoyed playing it. In addition to the two games Clockwork described, the Collection also includes Fairune Origin, which is essentially a prototype for the first Fairune. I thought it was pretty cool to look at Origin, Fairune, and Fairune 2 and see how the ideas grew and evolves over time. Plus, if you finish all three of those, you unlock a fun vertical shooter called Fairune Blast. I can't speak to the quality of that cause I don't know much about the genre, but I though it was a fun bonus.

Fun Fairune Fact #1: It's from the same dev as Kamiko, so there are some similarities.

Fun Fairune Fact #2: Last I heard the Switch Collection is getting a physical release from either Super Rare or Limited Run Games.

Wondering if anyone has struggled with or bounced off NSMBU Deluxe. There's an imprecision to the game that I find frustrating. It's a harder game than the other NSMB game I played seriously, NSMB2. The hit boxes don't seem to be very precise. Between that and the controls I feel like I die way more often than I should be.

I can't say that experienced any of those issues. Something I really enjoyed about it was that every death either felt like it was my fault or I just hadn't learned the level yet. In either case I always felt like I could overcome whatever was blocking me.

I haven't done all the Star Road levels (World 9), but my understanding is that they're super hard bonus levels so I'm letting myself off the hook.

I should also say that so far I've only played NSMBU, not New Super Luigi U, so I can't comment on that.

It has the usual slippery physics of a Mario game, but I haven't noticed anything unusual about it.

How many times, in a single week, can it cross my mind that I should buy Celeste, before I'm legally required to do so?

What controller are you using to play?

I haven't played NSMBU on Switch, but my experience to play some other "8-way move" games on the Switch, e.g. Celeste, is that the games were nigh-unplayable with the Joy-Cons, but excellent once I switched to a controller with a real D-pad.

Speaking of Celeste:

8. (Twice on Sunday.)

I haven't quite bounced off, but the controls do seem slippier than other Mario games. The difficulty also seems ramped way up. In other Mario games the controls actually feel good...not this one. I am playing on a Pro controller and was very excited to see that I have a final world to complete, just because I am very ready to be done. Not exactly a ringing endorsement.

Have you calibrated your controller sticks lately? I was having a problem with imprecise control in a game and after I went through calibration the difference was immediately noticeable.

I bounced off the game because it's boring, but the controls are fine. The physics are very slippery and floaty, but Mario controls well enough once you get used to the wonky physics. Maybe you just need more time with the game to get used to how it controls?

I haven't played it, but I've heard this complaint a lot. Doubt it's just you.

Anyone pick up Wargroove? What do you think so far? For $20 I am sorely tempted.

Wargroove - REVIEW (Nintendo Switch)

I will eventually be picking it up. Looks fun.
