Happy Hump Day Survey!

What is the thing you are most looking forward to in 2019?

Having the house in NC, our truck, and our rig sold - then having a place where we can take care of my father-in-law and from which Keaton can go to college. We're not going permanently off the road, but just over a month ago a lot of things changed. Now we're faced with doing what we've gotta do, and it's so damn much to tackle. Eating this whale one bite at a time and looking forward to having it all over with.

Seeing the less challenging answers to this question is nice. Reminders that things will get simple again eventually.

Work is sending me on several trips to the UK and Okinawa this year. My experience with Europe is limited to a handful of airports in the UK, Germany, Crete, and Portugal while traveling to/from my deployments to the Middle East.

During my last three years on active duty, in the mid-to-late 2000s, I was stationed in Okinawa and am also looking forward to going back and hopping into some scuba gear; I was certified as a Divemaster during my time there, but haven't been back in the water since I left.

Impeachment and jail time

Tanglebones, you scamp, what have you done now?

Captain Marvel, End Game, and a college friends wedding in Japan (combination excited and terrified, I've never travels anywhere that wasn't either English speaking or Spanish speaking)

Getting married to the love of my life!

Congratulations!

I’m looking forward to less drama and toxicity in 2019 (sadly, the second half of 2018 was marred by a relationship with one of my best friends turning toxic).

This makes Britney sad.

Sorry to hear about your relationship going south. It sucks when friends go through personality changes for the worse.

I appreciate it!

Hopeful for you having a much less toxic 2019!

Happy hump day!

You encounter a Djinn (Genie). She gives you three wishes. But, you are familiar with popular cultural references about how wishing for things can go horribly wrong (i.e. you wish to be a millionaire, your spouse dies in a horrific car accident and you get a million dollar insurance payout).

So you decide to try a test-wish to see if the Djinn is on the up-and-up. Something small, so if the magic is not good it will be both obvious but also not life changing (i.e. I wished for pizza, it had anchovies, the Djinn can go eff off).

What do you wish for? How do you know if it worked? What happened if it went horribly wrong?

I immediately wish to be cured of allergies and never have them again. It's worth the risk.

I feel like all my wishes are way to prone to monkey paw effects, and involve other people making decisions they didn't. So i'm tempted to just go with this:

You now have no nose.

The Genie decapitates you.

***

I would wish for someone I despise, but can observe closely, to be cured of their allergies.

I wish for the genie to have a happy and fulfilling day, with no negative repercussions to me and the people I care about.

I've read enough Monkey's Paw type tales to know that there is no wish that can't be twisted in some way to make the wisher wish they'd never wished it. With my luck, I'd think of Ghostbusters and the Sta-Puft Marshmallow Man would come and crush me.

I'd wish for a one-day Freaky Friday situation involving Mitch McConnell and some junior Democratic member of Congress. Best-case scenario: the US government gets reopened. Worst case: we can't get more shut down.

Worth it

This is so hard because I can always think of ways these can go wrong! I'm going for it, though.

I wish that I could have 100 books free, $0.00, in any format I want, to keep and not return. (I was going to say any book I wanted, but FEWER LOOPHOLES).

You're about to get a shedload of copies of Mein Kampf

I'd wish that my following wishes were granted with exactly what I have in mind without any ill effects.

Just don;t let your mind wander for even a moment.

Just remember that the third wish is traditionally reserved for wishing the djinn back into the bottle so it doesn't escape and eat everyone around you.

HAPPY HUMP DAY!

What is something that you thought you wouldn't like, but loved after you tried it? (Keep it clean? I guess?)

Haggas!

They Might Be Giants. Animal Collective. Radiohead. Metallica. Black Flag. Operation Ivy. The Flaming Lips. NOFX. Beastie Boys. Kendrick Lamar.

I don’t listen to the radio any more. But back when radio was king I would get annoyed when a song was grossly overplayed. I would instinctually hate the song and the band for subjecting me to so much monotony.

But sometimes that song would be Brass Money by the Beastie Boys. I lived in a slummy apartment on the corner of a busy intersection. I would hear that sweet 808 hit as the Gs would cruise past my block. But I was forced to hear it against my will. It was a hot summer and we didn’t have AC. Closing the windows was unthinkable.

Around that time I was at a friend’s house and he joyfully held up a cassette tape of Beastie Boys first album, Licensed to Ill. I protested but buddy put the cassette in the hi-fi and pressed play. We got to the end of side 2, flipped it over and pressed play again. We listened to that album 5 or 6 times in a row. Skipping Brass Monkey of course.

Edit

Spoiler:

I mean seriously! I’ve always been a fan of of rock, rap, punk, and metal. When side 1 track 1 came on with a merry-go-round loop of the drum intro to When the Levee Breaks by Led Zeppelin I just about lost my ish.
