2018 Community Game of the Year

These games were added to the wishlist:

Red Strings Club

Song of the Deep
Far: Lone Sails

Yay!

Does House Flipper count? Because that game's legit great.

Annnd another game on my wishlist. It looks like all the house stuff I like about The Sims, without the annoying sims.

Speaking of sims... can anyone enable on Farming Simulator 17? It's the one available on PS4, and the Platinum version is only $12.50 for PS+ members until the 15th. 75% off seems like a pretty good deal!

Do you (or anyone) know when it's expected to hit 1.0, or if anything is slated to change between then and now? I saw EriktheRed's comment but if nothing's slated to change, then shouldn't it be 1.0 and out of EA right now?

Well they just added in Steam Workshop support in the last patch. They've also been doing some minor bugfixes and made some small art updates. The last content patch was put out in late November with no more content changes planned until after launch.

Games that the community have delightfully put on my radar, or returned to my radar:

Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden
Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun
Frostpunk
Return of the Obra Dinn
Iconoclasts
Batman: The Telltale Series/The Enemy Within
What Remains of Edith Finch
SOMA
Battletech
Oxenfree
Marvel's Spiderman
State of Decay 2
Everybody's Gone to the Rapture
Seven: The Days Long Gone
Gravel
To The Moon

There's a slight interest in trying one of the newer Assassin's Creed releases. Origins or Odyssey. I think.

Liara - XI: There's a lot of lore and, like, 4 precursor races mucking about, she'll have plenty to sink her teeth into.

Wrex - VIII: I feel like the SeeD kids would really benefit from a wise, murderous turtle uncle to hang out with.

Kaidan - XIII: Lightning's going through a lot, she could use a rock, both spiritually and pectorally.

Garrus - T: Much as he might protest otherwise, a murky, morally compromised grey world suits him.

Ashley - II: She sucks, she can go to the game no one plays.

Tali - XII: Seems like she'd love airships.

Brilliant.

Between this and Steam winter sale, my wish list trippled in size.

I don't know. I tend to enjoy supporting small indie developers instead of waiting for an arbitrary "1.0" label.

I dislike early access too but agree there is no reason to wait on Slay the Spire. It has been super stable for a while and there is plenty of content. Jump in now if it interests you at all.

I also dislike rogue-likes and die-repeat-die-repeat games but it doesn't bother me on this game. It is less like you have to play through the easy parts to get to the hard parts over and over. It is more like the game starts easy because your powers are limited and as you get more powers the variety and difficulty ramp up with them (or not if you have bad luck or poor strategy).

I'll try Slay the Spire when it hits Switch next year.

Why not both! Bought Slay the Spire 7 months ago :S /sales-aholic.

Don't think "1.0" is that arbitrary - though much more so than it has been depending on how GaaS-y the game is. Still tends to be some kind of indication that major changes are slowing down.

I don't think it's arbitrary either. And I have no problem supporting small indie developers; I'd rather pay full price for Slay the Spire than buy it before it's finished. Personally, I don't like playing something that's unfinished, and I don't like playing a game where the developers make a lot of changes after release (looking at you, Civ VI). I prefer learning a game system without a feeling that the goal posts may be moved on me. StS might not suffer from these issues, but I also don't feel like I'm missing out on much by waiting a few months to play it now.

It's also made me even more conflicted in my resolve to save Subnautica until I've got a PC VR solution. Seriously, I'm extremely torn -- I already own it, and it sounds so much like my jam, but I'm totally sold on the idea of it being an amazing VR experience and so I'd love to experience it fresh in that context. Argh!

You should just start playing it, bud.

It's been on my VR wishlist for a while, so when I got it for free off the Epic Games store, I fired it up.

Long story short, the VR implementation is sub-optimal, and I'm going to be playing it pancake instead. Maybe that'll get improved by the time you get your cyber goggles, but for now, don't let that drive you to buy a headset/stop you from playing it.

In world where Fallout games, Assassin's Creed Unity, and many other AAA games with a "1.0" label on them that are buggy messes...it's kinda arbitrary. It's certainly arbitrary to the devs/pubs making these decisions.

I don't buy Early Access games that have a cohesive narrative because I'm likely to only finish that narrative once and I want it to be the best.

But with StS and other run-based games, you're only missing future cards/relics/enemies, which you're going to enjoy when they come out anyway. And many of these devs don't have deep pockets to make the game better, they need EA money to make the game better.

I agree that EA contains potential for regret, but so do 1.0 games these days. Mega Crit Games (devs/pubs of StS) got my money early and used it to make an even better game. Bethesda used to get my money and laugh at me while I played their garbage releases.

Thanks! That's incredibly helpful, actually.

I was primarily going off of Jeff Cannata's impressions, and while I love that he loves loving stuff, and I love that he loves VR, sometimes I have trouble parsing how much of his love will translate into my love, you know?

Bought due to this thread (but haven't played):
Return of the Obra Dinn
Gris

Bought due to another site's GOTY list:
My child, Lebensborn (unplayed by me, but my wife liked it)
Florence (made my honorable mentions, but my wife was unimpressed)
Yakuza Kiwami (pushed me over the edge when I saw the steelbook edition for cheap, still unplayed)

As good as purchased due to this thread:
Dusk (I had removed it from my Steam wishlist in early December. Put it back on a week ago)
Overcooked 2 (ps4 - in Amazon shopping cart)
Moss (ps4 - in Amazon shopping cart - the psvr thread got me to plan to buy it. This thread got me to go look for it in 2 stores....sold out in both)

I'm not the only VR-equipped Goodjer who found that to be the case.

I also had a touch of nausea with VR Subnautica and I've got pretty good VR legs at this point.

From now on I shall think of playing on a screen as ‘playing it pancake.’

Also, yeah, Slay the Spire has been on my radar for a bit, but seeing the love for it here will probably make me get it this year.

It's on my definite buy list. But since it's officially coming to Switch in 2019 I decided to wait for that version.

I didn't even know it was coming to Switch, so thanks for that. That's the one I'll be waiting for as well then!

Agree wholeheartedly. Meteorfall is superb!

No micro transactions.

Well Gris is on my wish list but I feel we all are missing the biggest news from 2018.

Spoiler:

Bowsette

Not the issue. Games with card mechanics just make me irrationally furious. No idea why. For my sanity I have to avoid them.

This thread hasn't had me wishlist or buy anything new as I only do that for the games that win. I play winners, not losers, folks. Get with the times, folks.

Off topic: Kind of want to do this with XCOM2 classes now.
Back on topic: XCOM2 is game of the year every year.

This is indeed true. Looking for that XCOM3 announcement this year.

Take a bit longer! He's almost dead!

I'm working on it. Promise.

Fund the Kaidan statue, or there will be no GotY list.

Working on what? Finishing the list, or waiting for Jonman to die?
