Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries Catch-All

Pages

Hey look, a new single player Mechwarrior game. I can get down to this. Mechwarrior 2 was the first game I ever bought with my own money.

Things I noticed so far:

Very poor placement of exhaust vents, why would you place them in the front. First, you'd be walking right into the exhaust in a machine known to have problems with overheating. Second, you're painting yourself as a huge target for heat seeking missiles.

The Don't Tread on Me snake on the left arm.

All the dangerous stuff is pointing forwards.

Thank goodness, I got a lot of mileage out of the SP MW games back in the day and had missed them (I don't actively any more, it had been dead to me). MWO just does not fill the same role.

I'm curbing my enthusiasm until I hear how Piranha plans to monetize this. Will it be subscription, play to play, or something else?

It's singleplayer only? So one time purchase plus DLC I would guess.

But a subscription model could also work. I'm thinking of a "monthly DLC" scenario. If it's modeled anything like MWO, buying additional mechs will have to factor into their plans. I can't imagine they'll be happy releasing 1 or 2 traditional pieces of DLC a year.

Yeah, I'm in. I love the Mech thing but not a fan of multiplayer Mech thing. So single player Mech thing is totally my, er, thing.

I loved stomping around in a big slow mech way back in Mechwarrior 2 so I got kinda excited about MWO... but man did that game put me off pretty quickly. It seemed cool initially but just wore me down and turned into complete frustration after maybe only 6 to 8 hours or so worth of playing.

If they can execute well on a singleplayer game I'd be super into it though.

Oh man! My dream of having my very own Mechwarrior pod may actually come true!

I've tried several Mechwarrior games over the years. MW2 was my favorite. MW3 was alright. MW4 didn't really do much for me. MWO was way too much of a grind to have any fun with. So here's hoping. I wish it was more Clan centered, honestly. My first experience with MW was with the Wolf and Jade Falcon clans in MW2, so the whole Inner Sphere stuff doesn't do much for me. But on the other hand, I'd love more MW in single player.

It would be cool if it had co-op PvE too. But, I'm still very interested. I put a ton of time into MW2.

The actual combat in MW is actually a bit silly when you think about it (slow moving behemoths with weapons of very limited range). That's why I think a story is required to leverage the deep universe and make it feel alive. MWO gave me some enjoyment but nothing like MW2 or MW: Mercs.

Considering that MWO isn't subscription based, I don't really see them going down that road. Still, we'll have to wait and see. I'm excited regardless.

I haven't been into Mechwarrior since MW2: Mercenaries, but I was really into Mercenaries.

Hopefully this is so successful that it sparks a mech renaissance and we get Chromehounds 2.

I've been so excited for this, I can hardly contain it! I spent HOURS upon HOURS playing MW2, Ghost Bear's Legacy, MW3, MW4 and Mercs, and the thought of having a SP campaign in MW again just makes my heart sing!

I think I'm going to try and get my old enhanced copies of MW2 to work on my current machine, or at least get MW3 to work. I gotta get that fix, and no, MWO doesn't do it for me.

I'm somewhat confused. What happened to Mechwarrior 5? Doing youtube and google searches comes up with weird things. Youtube gives me hits on what may be MWO. And there's no MW5 entry anywhere. Is that what happened? MW5 turned into MWO and MW5:M is now ... the single player MW5?

A now-dead developer called Smith and Tinker had tried to create MW5 with Piranha Games, but it fell-through, and they closed-up shop in 2012. MW5 is completely separate from MWO, thankfully. MWO uses the CryTek engine, while MW5 uses Unreal4 and is being handled by a completely separate team. Below is the teaser video that Smith and Tinker put out for their version of MW5:

That's what I ran across and got very confused.

Piranha has been speaking publically about moving MWO to Unreal 4 for month. I assume it will migrate along with this new game, it will just take quite awhile to port. Plus, it's probably providing the cash that supports the SP MW5, so they'll take their time with it.

They've never been very happy with a lot of the limitations of CryTek when it comes to their needs. They've never been able to get collisions of mechs working properly for instance, and they've had issues with netcode on very fast mechs to the point where they've not brought any into the game.

I personally have had hours and hours of fun with MWO. It's very niche, but I think they've done pretty well to support as many mechs as they have added over the years.

Just got an email from Piranha Games that MechWarrior 5 is up for pre-order.

Release Date is 9/10/19

Damn, I was hoping for a spring release.

I'm fine with them taking their time, the devs don't exactly have the world's greatest track history.

MechWarrior 5 Mercenaries - Gameplay Trailer

*looks pretty good to me.

I won't trust that a new MechWarrior game is good until it's out and everyone says it's good, and even then I will only 10% believe it until I play it myself.

But does it support the SideWinder joystick I used for MW2 and 3??

I think the gameplay and graphics in MWO are good. Sure there is room for improvement but it is satisfying mech-on-mech combat. What was missing was a good story. I'm hoping that MW5 brings us that missing component.

I was HYPED to click that video link but man... it hurts me to say that I came away pretty bummed. I know it's still early but it looks really rough. It almost looked just like that Crysis mod Mech Living Legend and that was released in 2013.

COME ON GUYS!

MW: Living Legend is still pretty great.

I'm stoked about MW5, but cautiously so.

What I really want is another Missionforce: Cyberstorm, dammit.

I actually played MW3 for the first time a little while back with that stick. Wonderful stuff. I need to finish that campaign.

I am somewhat surprised at all the hesitation for MW5.
The franchise is batting 1000, no?
MWO would most likely be the only one with issues but that is due to monetization not gameplay.
MW1
MW2 + Ghost Bear
MW2 Mercs
MW3 + the 2(?) expansions
MW4 + expansion
MW4 Mercs

That is some rock solid gaming right there.
Throw in the Mechassaults for more flavor. (I loved them)
The Mechcommanders were fantastic too.

All games made by someone else.

Well, it's being made by the MWO folks who....dooooon't have the best rep.

A thousand times this.

I adore the MechWarrior/BattleTech franchise, and I put a lot of hours into MWO... until I realized that I was only playing it because I adored the franchise and not because it was a good game that was actually worthy of my time.

Like the developers of a lot of broadly similar F2P games, Piranha weren't really good at anything except churning out a steady stream of shiny new 'mechs (in other games it would be tanks or ships or planes) to maintain their revenue stream from the "whales."

Quality assurance was sketchy at best. Map and game mode development pace was glacial. 'Mech and weapon balance was a rolling disaster. And everything about the gameplay design seemed intended to reward a tedious, passive playstyle where "teamwork" amounted to everybody huddled in a blob waiting to punish some ill-advised attempt at initiative, aggressiveness, or actual strategy by the opposition. The comment above that MWO's issues were all about monetization and not gameplay couldn't be further off-base, IMO.

Now a lot of this is stuff that won't necessarily be an issue in a single-player focused game. On the other hand, we have no reason to believe Piranha would be any better at developing the engaging single-player campaign experience a game like MW5 will need, because their track record in this area is limited to such classics as... *squints at Wikipedia* ...Medal of Honor Heroes 2 for the PSP and Die Hard: Nakatomi Plaza.
