NFL 2018: Wild Card Weekend

Take that “Americas” Team.

Really? That's surprising. Do 4 pm games generally draw more viewers?

Yes I think 4pm games usually do better, and also that was the only good match-up from the weekend that people wanted to see. All of the other games were kind of meh with the teams in them so there was pent up demand from people that wanted to watch the playoffs but didn't really care about the other games.

Omg, Foles salary balloons to $20 mil next year?

Sort of. The reality is that it was a one-year deal with some contract f*ckery to push a little bit of bonus money out of 2018 so that the Eagles could defer some cap hit.

Technically the contract runs through 2021, but 2019 is a mutual option year that was never ever going to be played out, and 2020 and 2021 are automatically voiding years.

I get that, just can't believe it. Really sh*t themselves in the foot. Good on Foles, though we'll see how quickly the topic is dropped after this weekend or the following.

2011 a #6 seed NY Jets led by the immortal MR Butt fumble himself traveled to Foxboro to face the #1 seed Patriots who weeks before humiliated them 45-3. Well we all know what happened next.

Anybody can be beat!

I almost hope the Eagles win the Super Bowl just so this drama can play out properly.

Moving to a related topic, what is the trade value of Nick Foles? I think I may end up surprised with what it turns out to be. Not because of Foles himself per se, but because of the fact that a team will be trading for a guy that they have to apply the franchise tag to, and either play him under the tag or offer him a deal rich enough for him to not just play out the tag and go into free agency the next year.

It'd be a bit like the Garoppolo trade except without the half-season of contracted games with which to evaluate before making the offer. Foles will also be 3 years older than Garoppolo was when that trade was made.

Reportedly they turned down a 2nd round pick offer last offseason. Trading for him now versus last offseason means trading for 0 contracted years versus 1, so I can't imagine the price going up as a result. Especially since everyone involved knows the Eagles don't have the "keep him" option this time around, and need to make a deal before free agency opens. I think I would peg Foles' baseline value around a low 2nd.

That said, it may be a seller's market. Anything Philly gets that's better than a low 2nd should be seen as a win for them.

Cardinals to hire Kliff Kingsbury as their head coach. He's very much in the Sean McVay mold as he's only 39. Kingsbury was the head coach at Texas Tech, but he recently took over the OC position at USC. He coached at USC for, oh, a month.

Bruce Arians to Tampa (boo)

And Dirk Koetter to ATL (yay!), though I was really hoping the Fal28-3cons would keep Sarkisian. I thought he was absolutely perfect for the job.

I'm convinced someone will pay a first-rounder for Foles.

First, All The Guy Does Is Win (TM). Dude's a wizard. No one but Foles could win a Double Doink game.

Second, who else are you going to take at QB in the first round in 2019? Ryan Finley? Daniel Jones? That guy from Ohio State, which has produced exactly two first-round QBs in its entire football history?

According to Wikipedia, they would be Don Scott in 1941 and Art Schlichter in 1982. Scott was killed in WW2, and Schlichter is in prison.

Tell that to the men's feminism thread, heyoooo sorry couldn't help it.

The funny part is that I showed my wife Ratboy’s comment so I could gloat, only for her to say, “Tell Ratboy, uh, yes, yes he does.”

She didn’t even give me a heyoooo...

Wait, did I get you and Quintin mixed up?

The harshest burn. For someone.

What are the chances of an AB for OBJ trade? They have nearly identical cap hits.

Pretty much zero, because you can't just swap the cap hits. Instead, both salary caps get slammed with the future prorated bonus money accelerating to 2019, making it much harder to then afford the other player's salary. Especially in Pittsburgh's case. They can't eat $21 mil of dead money for AB and then also take on OBJ's $16m of guaranteed 2019 salary.

Teams can move players like AB and OBJ and eat the dead money because they get draft picks in return, and can then fill some other roster spots with more guys on rookie contracts.

Bruce Arians isn't the most inspired hiring, but the interesting part to me is that it happened at all.

Arians retired, then said he would only consider coming back for the Cleveland job, then he accepted the Tampa job.

It pretty much confirms that his retirement was just to get out of Arizona.

I would love to hear the story behind that. I can take a few guesses as for why, and most of them rhyme with "Tichael Smidwell".

Funny, in the linked story about Treyvon Hester (who got barely enough of a finger on that FG attempt), the last bit of the story was about how Treyvon was not on the 53-man roster at the start of the season. He'd been on the practice squad.

And thank you Jon Gruden for cutting him from the Raiders!

I'd appreciate if he could help the Jaguars with a nice late-model Derek Carr.

Colts with 10 Did Not Practice guys?

Watkins was on the field today, but I read a twitter post from a journalists that said he was still limping some. We'll see. If Berry and Watkins are healthy and play full games, I think the chiefs win easily. Still not sure they are on that path, though.

More head coaches!

Broncos hiring Vic Fangio.

Browns hiring Freddie Kitchens.

Shame about Fangio. Would've liked him to coach that D again.

Kitchens is a shocker because I thought for sure they'd take someone with more experience, but I guess they wanted continuity with Baker (who I honestly believe is part GM of the team now).

So looking into it, Kitchens was actually hired to the Browns this offseason with the designation "associate head coach" in addition to his main title of running backs coach. It seems like he was brought in with the expectation of possibly being elevated to the position.

Browns fans are having fun with his Wikipedia page right now, it seems:

The sooner he fails as a head coach, the sooner he can return to San Francisco and get back to defensive coordinating. Fangio actually tried to return to San Francisco when they hired Shanahan, but he was under contract with the Bears and the Bears would not release him from it to allow him to go.

Yeah, you look at where Kitchens has coached and you see he's been around some quality individuals from Nick Saban to Bill Parcells to Bruce Arians to Hue Jackson.

Freddie Kitchens sounds like the name of Jan's new boyfriend.

Byron Leftwich is going to Tampa to be their new offensive coordinator.

Arians is like Leftwich's biggest fan, and the guy that pushed him into going into coaching, so there's no surprise here.

The best part of Freddie Kitchens getting hired is that it means Gregg Williams went 5-3 as interim head coach, getting 2 more wins in 8 games than Hue Jackson managed in 40 games, and still got passed over for the job.

Get wrecked, asshole.

You don't think they'll keep him as DC? Any team he is employed by I want to see lose.

Gregg Williams is being let go, which is awesome. Their D wasn't as good as it could be AND Williams is Williams.

GW was a replacement-level coach. I feel like he has a good wins above Hue Jackson, but nothing about watching the Browns said that the coach was great. Just that he wasn’t the dumpster fire Jackson was. I’m looking forward to seeing what Freddie Kitchens can do, especially as that offense looked great at the end of the season

I don’t know if he were my first choice for head coach, but I am really glad that we’re keeping him. If that meant he has to be permitted to head coach so be it.

Getting awfully cold in KC!

Oh, Dieter.

Jets are hiring Adam Gase, which means Mike McCarthy will not be a HC this coming season.
