Tuesday they start digging for our new pool!

Did the pool get buried? I'm confused.

Yep! Every yard has a pool inside it just waiting to be brought out!

They're grading the hill for the new house being built in the empty lot next to our house, and they managed to knock out our cable/internet connection.

Been there. Classic tragic comedy when after about a metre of pulled cable, a sliced end comes up and the tech from the provider and I look at each other.

Based on the love/hate for QS on the forum, I can't decide if I think the person who "Liked" his post did it because they sympathize or because they're just glad to see QS suffer.

Spent this afternoon installing under cabinet lights and a new outlet in the basement and I only had to go to the hardware store twice! I'm calling that a success.

Just make sure they don't grade it in a way that directs the water flow to your house. I've seen it happen, and undoing it once it has been done can be a long, messy (legal) process.

I'm finally looking for a solution to heat our garage in the winter so I can work on the car and other projects. Garage is attached, 2-car, with 12 foot ceiling. Has windows. Insulated, but drywall isn't finished (another project on the list). I bought a heater that runs off a 20 lb. propane tank. Is this safe to use inside the garage? Should I try and house the tank outside and run a line inside? Would cracking the windows be good enough for ventilation but not offset the benefits of the heater?

Had one of those last month, forgot to post.

Ever since we moved in we have been annoyed by the old door knobs. We replaced the front and back door, deadbolts, and everything. But the bedrooms, bathrooms, and closets we just left. Didn't fancy spending $200 or so to match the new handles when the old ones seemed to work. But they were mismatched, some bronze, some steel, and it really bugged me. Even some of the same knobs, one style on one side, one on the other. Just one of the sloppy things the previous owner did that's bugged me.

Anyway we had some home depot gift card from last holiday or sometime that we found and after we finished repainting the nursery we had some money left and I decided it was time to get the new door knobs. Installing them turns out to be a pain. The strike plates were different size than the old ones. Smaller, so that we would have had to patch the door frame or something to make it look right. But we found that they do sell other plates, and after a quick run we found 7 of the same color we needed to match the new knobs.

The real surprise came after. We had always had trouble with one bathroom door that didn't quite close. The old knob wouldn't lock sometimes because it didn't quite fit right. The door itself seemed to rub against the frame. We had tried tightening the hinges and a few nails to adjust as it seemed to be catching at the top. But we had never tinkered with the strike plate for some reason.

When we installed the new knob and plate the door closes perfectly. No rubbing on anything, opens/closes smoothly, locks every time. Really kicking myself for not doing the knobs 2 years ago when I wanted to. But at least it's all good now.

So sometimes a cosmetic fix turns out to be a functional fix too. Good times.

My old garage stayed 50 all winter long without heat because it was a tuck under and built into a hill. It was somewhat small but always good to work in during winter.

New garage stays 20 to 40 F depending on weather. It needs attic insulation but came with a heater that doesn't work. I need to investigate if it's the heater or outlet.

I have an old electic heater I brought from he old house too. But I have also discussed with a friend adding some force air ducts to pump hot air into the garage which is tempting.

Moral of the story I too look forward to having a heated garage

I'm finally looking for a solution to heat our garage in the winter so I can work on the car and other projects. Garage is attached, 2-car, with 12 foot ceiling. Has windows. Insulated, but drywall isn't finished (another project on the list). I bought a heater that runs off a 20 lb. propane tank. Is this safe to use inside the garage? Should I try and house the tank outside and run a line inside? Would cracking the windows be good enough for ventilation but not offset the benefits of the heater?

I would expect a fire marshal to kick you in the nuts over this idea.

In addition to concerns about CO buildup, propane sinks so opening windows would do nothing in the event of a leak.

. If your just doing it to heat for a bit that's fine. Have a small low opening and have a good CO detector that gives your ppm reading so you know if there is a build up. Again this would only be for small jobs and if anyone feels light headed you'd need to get out or open the door.

If you can store the tank outside that'd be optimal but chances are the tube would need extension.

That being said, on Craig's list or at the store is there an old heater you can pump exhaust out the side or anything? Or an old wood burning stove with a pipe going out would work too.

If it is insulated then it is just another room and a portable electric heater should work just fine.

Infrared dish? Heat, where you want it, without heating the entire garage...?

Lampworkers ask about propane in the house/garage on a regular basis. If you want to learn more about it look at the Safety forums on lampworketc.com.

A tank of propane, even the small ones, can do a lot of damage to a house when it explodes.

In my opinion, there is no safe way to store propane inside. You can mitigate the risk as much as possible, but there's always the possibility that something goes wrong.

This post brought to you by a red-blooded hypocrite.

This is several pages back now, but thanks for the feedback, bighoppa.

We ended up passing on the land for a couple of reasons, the main one being a pretty hardcore reality check once my fiance and I actually sat down and started budgeting things out. We were planning on sitting tight through the winter, figuring out what we wanted to do employment-wise, and resuming our search again in the spring, but we found a listing for a house that seemed perfect for us--a small house on a decent-sized plot of land, relatively secluded (neighbors are ~150 yards in either direction, can't see them when the leaves are up) but conveniently located (2 minutes to interstate exit, 10 minutes to downtown, 2~3 minutes from my fiance's relatives) and attractively priced. We made a cash offer the day after it was listed which was accepted by the seller, and we officially bought the place in early November.

We won't be moving in until sometime in the summer due to the massive amount of work that needs to be done on the place, most of which I am planning on tackling myself together with my future father in law and a contractor buddy of his. The shortlist, from top to bottom:

Spoiler:

- Remove existing gas chimney, which has flashing that has completely rusted out and has been dumping water into a closet for the 5~10 years the property has been abandoned.

- Redo the pipe venting exiting the roof, which for some reason has a ~6 foot run of what our contractor thinks is chimney piping instead of PVC and has probably been leaking into the attic space.

- Demo existing bathroom in upstairs loft/bedroom area and expand footprint with walk-in shower. Will also be changing the aesthetic from "train station bathroom" to something you would actually expect to find in a home. Saloon doors and walls that don't extend to the floor or ceiling aren't really our jam as far as bathrooms are concerned.

- Remediate mold issues in upstairs closet, courtesy of the aforementioned chimney flashing. Very curious/terrified of what's waiting for us when we get into the walls/ceiling.

- Expand a northward facing window on 2nd floor. We have a pretty sweet view overlooking the Lehigh Valley as we're partway up a mountain.

- Redo kitchen on first floor.

- Redo powder room on first floor.

- Expand another northward facing window on the 1st floor.

- Move washer/dryer hookups from what we'll be turning into our office/studio space on the 1st floor to a nook we'll be putting in on the 2nd floor.

- Remove purple carpeting from what we'll be turning into a living room/den.

- Install new flooring throughout first floor.

- Upgrade electric service from 100 to 200 amp. We'll be getting an electrician to handle this one.
- Redo insulation underneath the main addition, which will be our studio/office space. The previous owner installed the pink fiberglass stuff underneath the floors, which was a poor choice as it's a completely unprotected crawlspace and the house is basically in the woods, so it's become home to a wide variety of critters I've been disturbing as I pull it out.

- Install stairs to basement. Currently it's only accessible via bilco doors on the exterior, but there's a space in the vestibule by the front door where it looks like stairs had been installed before.

- Radon remediation. A short term test came back with 4.5 pCi/L, which is high enough that we need to do something about it, but not so high that it's top priority.

- Redo the entranceway vestibule.

I've already redone the gutters and sealed up around the leaky chimney flashing temporarily, but we've gotten a little sidetracked by yard/landscaping aspect. We knew there was a lot of trash on the property when we bought it, but it's turned out to be much, much worse than we expected. We've since learned from the neighbors that there were people squatting in the house while it was abandoned, and that the original builder/owner straight up had a junkyard on the property from the 1940's~1970's, which explains a lot of the stuff we've been finding. Highlights include:

Spoiler:

- A machete

- Dozens and dozens of bones, which we think are sheep given the shape and the fact that they've been sawn neatly in half. According to the neighbors this is probably due to the original owner as "it wouldn't surprise us if he'd been doing some butchering up there too."

- 6~7 wallets, some with IDs still inside. Turns out our squatters may have been pickpockets?

- A wide assortment of glass bottles, some of which are in pretty good shape and very old.

- An entire dead dog. I thought I was pulling up another piece of rotting carpet from under the leaf litter. Turns out the previous owners buried their dog very, very shallowly. Not fun.

- An abortion manual with some very graphic photos, directly alongside a bible. Not really sure what to make of this one.

- What feels like every single shingle from the previous roof, which the previous owner replaced a few years back. Every time I think I've got it all, turns out there's another layer just underneath the newly exposed layer of root and dirt.

- Plastic. So much plastic. Much of it has broken down and been ground down into the soil a solid 6 inches down. I am eventually planning on gardening on much of land and the idea of little bits of plastic in the ground gives me the willies for some reason, so I will be building a sifter to try to get as much of it out as I can. This particular project will probably continue for years to come.

Well, sounds like you bought yourself a fixer upper. From everything I've seen on HGTV, you need to install a bunch of shiplap, a farm sink, paint everything white, have some pops of color, put tons of useless "weathered" crap on the shelves, and you'll be set.

Good luck with everything! If that's your short list, I don't even want to think about what the long list is.

My fiance is handling all of the design elements, and she's definitely a Joanna Gaines devotee, so it wouldn't surprise me if some shiplappy stuff ended up making its way into the final house.
There's already a few exposed beams and we certainly don't lack for weathered crap that's been out in our yard for the last 60 years, so we're halfway there already I guess.

Just don’t let her put in a sliding barn ‘door’.

Heh, my woodworking coworker just showed me the bathroom barn door he installed for his wife.

I absolutely don't get the appeal at all, but more power to em.

When they are on the bathrooms it is even stupider. No sound or smell privacy, can see through the gaps at the sides. They are just a dumb fad that needs to die and in 20 years everyone is going to look back and laugh at and wonder what people were thinking.

Pocket doors. Pocket doors are where it's at.

Pocket doors be expensive and you have to do structural sh*t. Barn doors you can just hang anywhere.

For the smell thing, try Poo-Porri. It sounds like a gag gift, but my wife's office uses it, and she got some for the house. Stuff legit works.

LeapingGnome wrote:

Fun fact--there's already one in the house!
It's pretty junky and probably going to go, but the boss thought it looked alright so there'll probably be another one taking its place.

No argument from me. It looked good, it was what they wanted, but I say leave the barn doors in the barn.

Very popular in bathrooms at hotels, but I prefer a normal door.

At least no one is suggesting bifolds.

I goddamn hate bifolds. I've got two big mirrored ones in the basement bathroom/laundry room on the storage closets. One of them's developed some problem where one of the hinge pins is hopping, so it doesn't open all the way unless you hold it with your foot. You also have to shove them to get them closed, and they have no actual pull handles to open them. Plus they weigh a ton. One day, I'll replace them, but I don't know with what. Possibly some curtains or something. But since they're in the basement and don't get opened very often, it's way down the priority list.

First would be replacing all four upstairs interior doors with something solid. The current hollow core ones let too much sound through, which matters now that one of the kids sleeps in there and we watch TV after he goes to bed.

I've had to replace bifold doors in my house.

Pain in the ass that required some very careful use of a circular saw to trim the doors to the non-standard size of the door-holes.

I love pocket doors. What is the downside to them vs regular swing doors? Just harder to install? If I built a house I would be tempted to just make all of the doors pocket doors.
