Hidden Gems of Hulu and Hulu+

Has anyone here used the Hulu live tv streaming? Thoughts? Does it fully replace cable or is it just another proxy that requires a cable sub as well?

The scene with the hockey coach dressing down the team via Oreo metaphors is something to behold.

We used it for a bit while debating cutting the cord. I think Hulu's biggest issue for us is that it doesn't carry AMC, and that's pretty huge hole.

It replaces cable, although the selection of channels is a bit smaller. But it can become a cable provider login for supported services, like Disney Now, and it also has some cloud-based DVR stuff.

We've been using it for awhile, and it's been fine. Less expensive than adding cable to our internet.

I just did a free trial of Hulu live streaming and ended up going back to Youtube TV. Youtube's experience was just better for us, but if you already subscribe to Hulu for the on demand stuff and don't mind commercials it is a good deal. With Hulu you cannot fast forward through commercials on the live TV DVR stuff, and the on demand catalog still has commercials built in that cannot be fast forwarded, which is REALLY annoying. You have to pay another $15 a month to be able to fast forward/skip, whereas with Youtube it is included.

I was using it on a Roku and didn't see any performance issues.

As a rec league hockey player, Letterkenny is endlessly hilarious. 10-ply.

I just came here to say that if you aren't watching Atlanta, you are missing out on one of the most interesting and subversive shows to ever be on television.

It mixes up this weird world, full of magical realism(like an invisible car) but then mixes it with the municipalities of real life, like when Earn is sitting in jail waiting to be processed, or when Van loses her job for admitting that she smoked marijuana to her boss. Her boss tells her the district has no money for testing so the test is merely an illusion and then fires her anyway because she admitted to using an illegal substance.

It is messy, beautiful, mundane, amazing, silly and poignant. If you were to ask me what genre it existed in, I would say, "Real life."

Just saw the 2nd season got added, think we'll jump in this month. First season was amazing.

FX is really good at these 30 minute dramas. Better Things is another Real Life show that subversive. It’s not as much magical realism, although it does occasionally go there. It’s the story of a single mom raiding three daughters, and is often a powerful f*ck you to patriarchy.

Baskets is closer to the vibe of Atlanta, with a much different setting. It’s the funniest of the three, but that is really a facade. It’s a play on the sad clown, and is really the story of a dysfunctional family slowly learning how to trust and depend on each other, using clowning as a metaphor.

I think all three shows, all 30 minute dramas based on “Real Life,” are brilliant. Better Things is probably my favorite show on TV right now. Like Atlanta, it often just shows you absurdities. Sometimes episodes seem to have three acts that do not follow any narrative, but when it’s done it all works together to really explore an idea from different angles.

All three can be hilarious, and they can also have me bawling my eyes out. The third season of Better Things is starting in the week or two, and I think all the episodes are on Hulu, too.

I took a step back from Atlanta after the talk show episode in season one, but keep meaning to come back to finish the season and start season two.

I just started Siren season one and so far it’s interesting. About a mermaid looking for her sister and trying to adjust to being around humans on land.

It’s worth checking out Lodge 49 if you haven’t already. It’s basically Twin Peaks meets the Big Lebowski- a SoCal burnout stumbles across and decides to join a Masonic-ish Lodge. Hijinx and mystery ensues.

I need to get back to Lodge 49. My wife and I started it, but she decided it wasn’t for her, but I enjoyed it.

We finally got around to starting Killing Eve the other night, and it really delivers. I had been holding off on it to get my wife interested. She is a big Sandra Oh fan, so u knew she would like it, but it kept failing to make the cut.

Beyond being a great showcase for Oh, it’s just really a fantastic spy show with a great sense of humor and a really dark voice. Like a British version of Dexter (although a completely different story). It pretty much ticks every box for my wife, who lives British crime drama, spy thrillers, and, of course, Oh.

Plus, it’s a fantastic cast of female leads, and is very much about female empowerment, showing how various characters work around the patriarchy of their world.

Watched the first three episodes last night and I'm really digging it.

I watched Killing Eve last year, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Both Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer were great in it.

Holy f'ing Canadian Christ on a cracker is Letterkenny amazing and on Hulu. Let's go, boys. Pitter patter, boys.

Suggestions like that Mixolyde are why I appreciates yah.

Have to be honest, I tried Letterkenny a couple of weeks ago while my daughter was in for Christmas, and it did not go over well at all. It's pretty problematic, if not outright misogynistic. My daughter was repulsed, and my wife had the look of, "Why would you show us that?" I didn't get through an episode. It's kind of an example of exactly what my wife and daughter would say they hate about sports culture.

It's funny, but from what I have watched, it's not something I would even want to admit to my daughter I watch, so I crossed it off my list. Just felt like I should add that, because I think some folks here might want the warning.

Forgive me for suggesting a show on Amazon Prime in the Hulu thread, but if anyone wants a Canadian sitcom they can watch with their wife and daughter, Corner Gas is a clever and charming show. It’s got 6 seasons and a movie, all available on Prime.

Oh, is that what you appreciate about me, Grenn?

A fair criticism, Jay.

So I was bored just scrolling through Hulu's offerings and there was Letterkenny, and remembering it being mentioned in this thread I gave it a go. Currently on season 3 now, this show is legit hilarious.

Season 2 of Future Man is up. It goes in a very different direction than the first season, but I really like how they developed the characters and explored the wibbly, woobly, timey, wimey elements of their version of time travel.

Oh, cool. I enjoyed the first season far more than I expected.

Going to need you to take about 20% off there, Grenn.

Season 2 of Future Man is fantastic. I liked the first season but it felt like they were trying too hard to be edgy and often just throwing everything against the wall to see what sticks. Season 2 is a lot more focused and gives the characters more time to breathe.
The time travel sequence in the finale and the repercussions they face in the epilogue are just so much fun as well.

Fairs enough.

Just got Hulu! Mainly because I've always meant to watch Community.
