Things you should know by now, but only just discovered

Hah.

That's... not unnerving at all.

Yeah, Siri's response is disturbing.

Google Assistant is amusing.

Alexa is silly.

You have all three of those devices in your home?

I have an iPad, an Android phone, and Alexa installed on Android.

I just discovered that Alexa can be installed on Android.

Try telling Siri, Google Assistant, or Alexa "freeze all motor functions."

I'm going to give the point to Cortana here for actually giving a relevant result to help me understand the reference instead of a pre-programmed meme.

Bah, any search engine can give you a relevant result.

And that's what these are: voice controlled search engines.

And they are also still really just voice controlled keyboards.

My wife was mixing up a batch of drinks earlier and got frustrated when she asked Alexa “how much alcohol is in a shot” and Alexa gave some weird answer. I told her she should've instead asked her “how many ounces are in a shot glass” to which my wife replied, “she should’ve known what I meant.”

Actually, they're complicated programs meant to harvest personal data from you and sell it to the highest bidder.

Like I said: search engines.

A recent conversation I had pertained to people's assumption that search engines cannot and do not query each other. I provided known examples such as Bing and DuckDuckGo (privacy win). I then proceeded to drive the conversation whereby Alexa, Siri, Cortana, and Google potentially query each other to provide the best, most accurate answer for their user. Drinking ensued and subsequently the questioning of what is "Truth".

Psst! The AI(s) now known as Skynet might be listening

Despite reading all the books multiple times I just today discovered that Tolkien intended Middle-Earth to be our Earth prior to modern recorded history while watching this video on Tolkien’s philosophy.
In a lot of ways it’s obvious in retrospect but this seriously blew my mind. Someone should do a modern reboot of the series.

The original name for Mike Teavee in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was Herpes Trout.

As someone who is a full-on Alexa adopter, it blows my mind that someone doesn't know this. That is a great illustration of "just because I know/do something does not mean that everyone knows/does the same thing". Thanks for that!

The Alexa app on my (Android) phone controls a ton of things in my home, including all Christmas lights. You can also get Cortana on Android, if that's your thing.

No Siri though (AFAIK)

Does Alexa on Android control phone functions too and can it be set as default?

I would seriously ditch iPhone for Android if Amazon built Alexa into a full-featured phone assistant for that platform.

Well, I just found my new screen name.

Exit Fake Gamer Girl. Enter Herpes Trout! IMAGE(http://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/animated/anim_59.gif)

Reminds of me of my IRC days long ago, and how much more interesting the slap command would have been if it included a Herpes Trout instead of just "trout".

I just realized Clock’s avatar is a frog. I never really paid attention before and always thought it was a weird smiley face frosted on a cookie.

It's foam in a cup of coffee that looks like a frog.

Thanks for the clarification, ClockworkHorse.

Yes, but does it do everything else on the phone too (call, text, etc)?

I don't know. To be fair, I don't use those features with the Google Assistant (probably should). I may try it out and let you know.

Just tried it out. The Alexa app is not good for texting. In fact, the experience was so bad that I didn't even try calling. Switched back to the Google assistant on my phone. Oh well...

Thanks for testing!

Without taking time to look at it, I thought it was a messed up penguin / porg type thing.

oh, oh, oh, I know! It's a demon head / monster thing. Not a wolf catching a fish.

eh? eh? yeah... anyone? I'll see myself out as I expect no one to remember what I'm referencing since it was years ago (at least it was on GWJ) and I can't even recall it correctly.

I think I remember the image you're talking about!

That's it! Also, that's a much less compressed version of the image.
