The Orville Catch All - Beware: Spoilers!

I thought it was a great premiere. A low-stakes episode that allowed for a lot of fun character stuff.

I hope they don't write off Kitan. She's my favorite.

Are they really? She's one of my favorite characters. That's disappointing if true.

I recall reading that she was leaving the show temporarily, but it was likely for most of this season.

I read that she's filming a Netflix show at the same time and couldn't be in two places at once, but she still showing up to cons and stuff and nobody has said anything about her being off the show for good.

Spoiler:

Why could they only fit 30 rescuees in the shuttle? It looked like there was room for at least 10 more? Or did I miss something with their pseudo science?

Also, my wife and I thought there were some really funny spots in last night's episode.

Spoiler:

Though I think the resolution between Bortus and Klyden was kinda rushed and was more of a fairy tale ending.

Well,

Spoiler:

I hope we see you soon, Alara!!

That was a way better episode than it deserved to be. *sniff*

Spoiler:

Also, OMG! Evil Doctor Plox!!!

Spoiler:

Two former ship's doctors at once!!!!

It has been confirmed that Alana is leaving the show though the door is open for a return later down the line.

I dug the latest episode Nothing Left on Earth Excepting Fishes. Very Enemy Mine-esque.

Spoiler:

The thing I really liked was that Ed wasn't disgusted that he had been intimate with someone different that he was, only upset by the betrayal. To McFarlane, it is obvious the he believes that love is love, regardless of how it fits together.

Thought this weeks episode was weakest so far this season. Pretty standard episode we seen before in trek.

The one thing I wished they touched on was that the goblin people weren't in the wrong. I wish a attempt was made at peace from them. Or the captain could have just used stun on them. Instead we get the standard scary looking alien is the bad guy.

I really enjoyed this episode. It was a very familiar sci-fi trope, but that's what trek does and Orville did it well in my opinion. There probably could have been more nuance with the goblin aliens, but it would have come at the expense of the B-plot centered on the pilot in this episode which i quite enjoyed as well.

Looks like i'm an episode or so behind you lot here in the UK, but I have to say season 2 has disappointed me so far.

It feels more like a soap opera than a Sci-Fi show, last seasons episodes often had strong story's...

If the Stars Should Appear

Majority Rule

Mad Idolatry

These where my favourites from S1, all an easy match the Trek universe, but this season so far has me reaching for the fast forward button.

Yeah, I haven't much cared for Season 2 so far, but this last episode, "All The World is Birthday Cake", was quite good. It really needed another 30 minutes for a proper resolution, things came together a little too easily, but if you forgive the pacing problems, it was done well.

On a major seasonal plot development, which I'll spoiler-tag in case people aren't far enough along:

Spoiler:

It looks like the security-chief swap is permanent. I was just getting to the point of liking the old actress; I'd come to accept her as promoted because of race, because her physical attributes were so extraordinary that they made up for her uncertainty. But I already like the new one better.

It feels to me like an emergency casting change because the showrunner(s) decided that the role wasn't working, and after the first episode with the replacement, I believe I agree with the decision.

Spoiler:

The new actress instantly clicked with me and so did her character.

I think that is a characteristic flaw with Star Trek and sci-fi television as well.
They introduce huge issues in an approachable manner. But you have to have some resolution for the show and you can solve racism, blind evangelism, the nature of command, isolationism, porn addiction, climate change, etc. in 5-10 minutes.

This season seems to be particularly vulnerable to this. The positive thing I do get from this season is it displays a lot of the creators's heart. Which is very important but should be sprinkled throughout a handful of episodes rather than the crux of the season.

I liked the bit where the crew was stoked that there was first contact mission.

My favorite bit was when they were walking up to the aliens and Mercer was talking himself into using a fake name during the introduction.

I like that they really don't seem to have a Prime Directive, but half their episodes seem to argue that they really, REALLY should.

I feel like the solution to this one:

Spoiler:

very much resembles the resolution of the Giant Ball of Trash episode of Futurama. "We did a horrible thing that will come back to bite us later, should we care? Nah thats ages from now, FK it"

and while this wasn;t really a prime directive situation, the society asked to be contacted, shoo buddy creating a falsehood to manipulate their culture seems like it will have much greater consequences than simply saying "Those are diplomatic staff. They aren't subject to your local laws, and you literally can't stop us from taking them back so don't make us"

I want to nitpick the show like I would Star Trek but then I remember this is a silly comedy... mostly.

Anyway...

Spoiler:

None of them pointed out that those holy constellations don't even exist on planets in other star systems. Also every planet has a different number of days in a year so while Bortus and Kelly may be "jelliac" this year, they may not be next year.

The most interesting thing is the parallel evolution of the FN P90!

LOL, well, the P90 is the ubiquitous futuristic-looking weapon.

I love how the show balances silliness with seriousness.

This is just clear proof of a secret visit by an SG team to the planet.

Isaac being a jerk was hilarious.

yeah that pretty well sums it up. This show certainly isn't afraid to touch tough subjects.

What a roller coaster this show is. I love it!

or let the repercussions linger past the episode in question. I feel like this one is going to echo for the rest of the season, much like the episode with the Bortus's child on Macklus(sp).

I still miss Kitan, but i'm really liking the new security officer.

Watching it tonight with my wife as I had class last night. Provided they have it available on demand, it wasn't available this morning
