NFL 2018: Week 17

7-0

My grandfather just kicked a FG for the Colts.

Blaine Gabbert!

Chiefs!

My favorite part of the game today was after Tyreek's second TD, he did not celebrate, he dropped the ball and sprinted to the Chiefs bench and sat down with Demarcus Robinson who clearly was making a show of not celebrating. Both had been called for taunting on earlier TDs.

Yes, the Chiefs got two penalties today for making the Raiders fell bad. Tyreek's was BS, as he was taunting the Raiders players that would not let not of Damien William's leg long after he had crossed the goal line. And Robinson's was for waling into the end zone backwards, arms stretched out. He should have stopped and donate Nestea plunge.

The Chiefs will play the Colts, Ravens, or Chargers in the 2nd round. My preference would be Ravens first, Chargers second, and Colts third.

Is that because you think it would be a great game? The Ravens beat both the Colts and the Chargers and came about as close to beating the Chiefs as all but 4 teams this year.

Steve Wilks out in Arizona. The Cards did him really, really wrong.

Unrelated: The Interwebs tell me that the Raiders might play their entire 2019 season in ...

... London!

On the continuum from IT OCCURRED TO US to DONE DEAL, it's probably not even a MAYBE.

Oof, if they start calling that out as a penalty then I hope Aghalor stops doing it. He managed to get away with it this year.

Would be nice if these officials could remain consist-

*slapped with a $25,000 fine.*

Imagine if relegation were a thing:

ARI and SF to D1
Alabama and Clemson to NFL

Yeah, that seems like a strange desire to have. I'd want to play the Colts of I wanted to win.

Both the Ravens and Chargers have good D's.

Yeah, he deserved another shot. How is it his fault that Bradford and Big Bird took up so much of the cap that they couldn't field a decent OL?

Ah, looks like Adam Gase is fired.

Edit: Mike Mayock in at Oakland GM.

MARVIN LEWIS OUT at Cincy. I know it was expected, but it actually happened!

Vance Joseph out in Denver.

Nada shocking outside of Mayock.

Bold prediction: Don Martindale gets a head coaching job and Marv Lewis takes a one year position as DC for Baltimore.

Even the 0-16 Browns would slaughter Alabama. They might even win if it was 7 on 11.

I was close on the Vikings.

I called them 7-8-1 after the tie with the Packers and no playoff games.

Once we got blown out by the Bills, most regular followers of the Vikings knew the season was a bust. Only the hardcore crazies believed we had any shot.

Marvin Lewis endorses Hue Jackson as the next Bengals coach. He has to be joking right.

Surely hiring top officials for your organization from TV positions is a winning strategy, right?

Your postseason QBs, ranked more or less in order of accomplishment and talent (but mostly accomplishment):

Tom Brady, Patriots
Drew Brees, aka the Finger Licking Midget, Saints
Russell Wilson, Seahawks
Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs
Andrew Luck, Colts
Philip Marmalard, Chargers
Nick Foles (maybe), Eagles
Jared Goff, Rams
Deshaun Watkins, Texans
Lamar Jackson, Ravens
Mitchell "Mitch" Trubisky, Bears
Dak Prescott, Cowboys

... if this were purely a talent-based list, I might put Mahomes ahead of Wilson. But Wilson has one ring (and nearly two) despite throwing to some of the worst receivers this side of Charlotte. Mahomes is definitely more exciting but at this point has merely one good season.

From Luck to Waktkins, it's all sort of a jumble to me. I'm down on Trubisky and Prescott. Jackson's so unconventional he's hard to rank (but I'd rather watch him than the two guys below him).

I'm not set on any of these ranks except for 1-2. Argue away!

Speaking of quarterbacks, Foles is cleared to play against the Bears on Sunday, though no one is discussing his injury. That's got me a little concerned, but what can you do. They just want to assure everyone that Sudfeld won't be starting.

No word on Wentz' condition.

Lamar's 6-1 and should be 7-0 if not for a freak 4th and 29 miracle.

Small sample size but damn.

Falcons sorta cleaned house: Fired offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian, defensive coordinator Marquand Manuel, and special teams coach Keith Armstrong

When did 4th and 9 become 4th and 29? I mean, I know Najomes is quite the folk hero, but still...

There was a pretty great 3rd and 19 Mahomes completed earlier in the game that led to a TD.

But you are talking about both Mahomes has more 20 yards plays than any QB in the NFL, and Tyreek Hill has more 20 yard plays than WR in the NFL. And on that 4th and 9 the commentators said that the Ravens needed to keep Mahomes in the pocket, because when he rolls out is often when the magic happens. And sure enough, they lost contain, and Mahomes concerted the 4th and 9 for 48 yards to Hill.

Baltimore has one thing that the KC defense needs, and that is a turnover prone QB. LJ kept KC in the game, and without a huge punt return, failed to produce enough offense to worry me.

I’m more worried about QBs that can win with their arms.

I mean the United States did it.

I would love Adam Gase as OC in Jacksonville.

Niners are keeping DC Robert Saleh, which isn't a huge surprise after the defense went from 24th last year to 13th this year despite no edge rush.

Jags keeping Marrone not a huge surprise either, but Dave Caldwell staying is.

Russell Wilson showed in the Chiefs game why his experience matters. Mahomes is still a rookie for all intents and purposes, and Veteran leadership really counts when it gets late in a season and the games are in playoff atmospheres, like that Chiefs/Seattle game.

I think the Chiefs are 50/50 to get to the Super Bowl. While it won't really be on Mahomes, as the X factor is if the defense can play, his inexperience has come into play already a few times this season. He has had some terrible first quarters, almost seeming like he is too jacked up. And late in games, he sometimes pushes too much. Both are things that I think will fade in the coming seasons. but for now, I think they are valid concerns, especially because the defense can't really be counted on.

One interesting development for KC, though, is the Chiefs benching Scandrick for rookie Chavarius Ward. He actually looked pretty good against Seattle, even if Russell Wilson completed some amazing passes while he had solid coverage, like that late deep pass that Wilson dropped in from a mile high. He looked even better against the Raiders. He has a lot more speed than Scandrick. The key is, Kendall Fuller was out against Seattle, but was back for Oakland.

If Berry and Watkins are back and healthy for the playoffs, I'm going to feel much less nervous about the playoffs. As it is, I'm just hoping Mahomes just keeps making miracles plays.

So the NFL just fired damn near all of its black head coaches. Thoughts?

Coincidence, I don't think race played into it really. Is there one you can point to and say "that guy should not have been fired"? Maybe the Cardinals but again nothing to do with him being black for that franchise IMO.

My frustration with the Cardinals is the GM (who is white) clearly had a hand in this mess and is still employed.

The rest probably were due. I mean Marvin had about as good as run as you get these days.

The thing to hope for is guys like Duce Staley finally get a real opportunity to interview and they don’t just recycle the usual cast of characters.
