2018 - 12 Month Pile Program

Pages

Alright, so I don't expect to play any new games the rest of the year, nor will I be beating anything. I'll still hold off on my December report, but I'd like to do my first-ever annual report.

Behind the spoiler: every game I've played an beaten in 2018. Games in bold are ones I've beaten.

Spoiler:

GAMES of 2018 PLAYED:
Iconoclasts
Secret of Mana (PS4)
Destiny 2: Warmind & Forsaken
Little Witch Academia: Chamber of TIme
God of War
Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion
Lost Sphear
Octopath Traveler
Monster Hunter World
Marvel's Spider-man
SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy*
Shadow of the Tomb Raider
Mega Man 11
Darksiders 3
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate*

Beaten: 11
Total: 15

* These are a bit inconsistent. I've rolled credits on Smash Ultimate several times, but have neither unlocked every character nor completed World of Light. As such, I consider Smash Ultimate incomplete. On the other hand, SNK Heroines was such a disappointment that I have already deleted it and have no interest in completing the game with every character or pairing and unlocking all cut-scenes/endings and etc. Therefore, rolling credits counts it as completed to me.

GAMES of PRIOR YEARS:
Mario + Luigi
Fire Emblem Warriors
Telltale's Batman: Season One
Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle
Mighty Switch Force
Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
I Am Setsuna
Flinthook
Gravity Rush 2
Shin Megami Tensei 4
Earth Defense Force 4.1
Battle Chasers: Nightwar
Hollow Knight
Devil May Cry

Beaten: 5
Total New to Me Games: 14

GAMES REVISITED:
Super Metroid
Secret of Mana (SNES)
Tomb Raider
L.A. Noire
Mega Man Battle Network
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Rise of the Tomb Raider
Resident Evil: Revelations
Bayonetta
Darksiders
Darksiders 2
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Final Fantasy VI
Mega Man X

Total Games Revisited: 15
Total Games Completed: 6

So what's the total count look like?

GAMES PLAYED: 44
GAMES COMPLETED: 22

Now let's do some naval gazing.

Spoiler:

So what we're looking at is a 50% completion rating. Now, there's some factors screwing with that number. For example, even though Secret of Mana on SNES and PS4 are the same game, I counted them as separate. If we drop that on SNES it's 43 games played. Moreover, if we drop all the games I'd already completed, the total is 29 new games (28 if we remove Secret of Mana PS4) with 16 completed (15 sans Secret of Mana PS4). That's... about 55%, so not actually much better.

But if we really look at those numbers, we can see that the cause of the dropped percentage is revisiting games that I... just cannot fully get into or are not as engaging as other titles, or are games that I've already played and beaten and therefore do not feel as much pressure to complete.

Let's consider that first category. Games I cannot fully get into or are not as engaging. Gravity Rush 2 is a game I want to desperately love, but I just don't. Which is strange, as I really enjoyed its predecessor, which is by all accounts more janky. I think here we have a situation similar to Borderlands 2, where the sequel makes a lot of improvements where it counts, but remains janky nonetheless and expands into something even bigger. I may have disliked Borderlands 1, but if I were forced to replay it I would gladly do so over Borderlands 2, which was just too dang big. The same may be for Gravity Rush, especially since I find the new powers to only increase the game's jank.

Then you have a game like Hollow Knight. I played it a while on PC, but as I don't view it as a gaming machine I was gradually distracted away. Once I found out it was coming to Switch I endeavored to play it on that platform, only having to restart the game felt so daunting. I was already getting the feeling the game was too big on PC, no doubt a victim of new areas via stretch goals on Kickstarter, and having to try and get back there was similarly daunting. I may not actually return to that game, as part of what I like about Metroidvanias is how quick they can be to revisit.

Flinthook was a game I wanted to enjoy due to its mechanics, but its Rogue-like nature and awkward controls prevented me from truly enjoying it.

2019 may be a collection of such games again. A number of titles I kickstarted are due for codes, such as Battle Princess Madelyn and Bloodstained. I may learn myself a lesson in kickstarting games that I don't actually have a big interest in their heritage or genre. I kind of got this from Battle Chasers, though I have no regrets given the support I'd like to throw Airship Syndicate's way.

But this definitely means I want to work on the new games I play. Games that I buy on sale or choose to revisit. For example, in a sleepy stupor last night I wrote in the 2019 Pile thread that it might be better for me to avoid a Travis Strikes Again purchase. I have misgivings, and if I follow my 2019 goals/guidelines then that means I should not buy it. With that in mind, the opening three months of 2019 are... surprisingly clear. The real stumbling block in regards to mis-givings is time.

For example, I'd love Tales of Vesparia: Definitive Edition and Onimusha Warlords. However, I'm still hoping to play Devil May Cry 3 and 4 before 5 releases in March. I want to play Valkyria Chronicles Remastered or World of Final Fantasy on Switch. Right now, I know I will be playing Final Fantasy VI and at least some Destiny 2 before Resident Evil 2 lands. Switch and PS4 are effectively my gaming machines, and I have one primary game running on both systems with some minor ones. I don't have much time for anything else.

So with that in mind, it is best if Tales of Vesparia and Onimusha are added to the Wish List. The misgivings aren't whether I'll enjoy the games or not, but whether I'll have the time to fit them in. Unfortunately for me, hot new releases tend to overtake remasters. Not so much by choice as much as it is by interest... though maybe that's just me trying to figure out why I'd rather RE2 over Vesparia and Onimusha. At the same time, aren't I reducing their priority for a remaster and a game I already played some of?

Then again, should my pal Steve decide he wants to do Tales of Vesparia, it could change my priorities since it's a game I want to play and he and I could do a podcast on it.

So basically what I want to play is as much a matter of whim as it is desire. Nevertheless, I learned in 2018 to play what I want and avoid playing games either for support of a developer – I may wish them continued existence but I'd much rather a game that appeals to my tastes – or for some other pressure.

What I also learned is that revisiting old games is a great time, even if I don't complete them. The nice thing about going back to a game I already beat is that I feel no pressure to complete it, but I still get to enjoy the gaming time. No guilt or nothing.

To finally conclude this entire rambling exercise with a succinct lesson: the 50% completion percentage isn't a problem. What I want to fix is the completion percentage of games that are new to me versus those abandoned that I've already beaten. Sometimes you got an itch that needs a scratch, and five or six hours of scratching is all you need as opposed to twelve to twenty to fifty.

My hope, then, is that even if that number is 50% again this time next year, I won't be so bothered by it.

So there we go. Lots of thoughts regarding my playing of games in 2018 and how I can better spend my time in 2019.

I am very near to finishing the last two games on my pile for this year, Doom and Etrian Odyssey Untold. If I get some good time in (and don't run into a wall in Etrian) then I should be able to roll credits on both before New Year's!

Etrian is done! Now I just need to finish Doom.

What I want to fix is the completion percentage of games that are new to me versus those abandoned that I've already beaten. Sometimes you got an itch that needs a scratch, and five or six hours of scratching is all you need as opposed to twelve to twenty to fifty.

This is a lesson that I need to learn. I'll often want to replay a game but either start it and trudge to the end even if I'm not having fun like I thought I would, or else I abandon it and feel guilty about it. Learning how to sample games I've played before would be really useful for me.

Ehh, slow at work so might as well do my end of the month report, nothing is going to get finished by end of the year anyways.

Added:
Regalia of Men and Monarchs
Blood Bowl 2
Everybodys Golf
Dragon's Crown Pro
Kingdom Come Deliverance
Detroit: Become Human
Battlefield 1
Battle Chasers Nightwar

Finished
Crew 2
Witcher 2 Enhanced Ed.
Wreckfest
Bulletstorm Definative Ed.

Playing:
Witcher 3

I actually only got one game for Christmas from my wife, (Detroit: Become Human), I've been eyeing Kingdom Come for a long time, when I saw it half off at local store I decided to dive in. Battlefield 1 was 4 dollars, and at that price even if I have an hour of fun its worth it. Been curious about Battle Chasers, Blood Bowl and Regalia for some time, so I decided to snatch them up from the recent PSN holiday sale. Dragons Crown was a total impulse purchase (mostly due to the beautiful steelbook case) I finished this back on ps3, but I think some mindless beat em up could still be fun to releave some stress. Everybodys Golf I bought on pure convinience of just having it on my hard drive instead of playing musical discs when I want to play a round of golf.
Alot of the purchases I would classify as "retail therapy" as the past couple weeks has been really hard in the stress and depression area's.

Looking foward to the next year as 2018 stunk.

Regalia’s pretty interesting. I thought it had a lot of good ideas and enjoyed it through most of the game, but it felt like a slog by the end. I give the developers a lot of credit for creating a tactical game in which each character plays quite differently on the battlefield.

Interesting. I've never even heard of Regalia, but it looks interesting. Assuming that it's not just a nostalgic, "I can do FFT but better" project.

Based on the design of the game, I don't quite think that's what it's going for.

I'm not quite sure what game's tactical component is the best analog to Regalia. On the tactical side, each character has a set of moves that's completely distinct from any other character, and they don't learn new moves from job points or anything like that. Rather, IIRC, all the new moves are gated behind social ranks and/or personal quests. There's also a calendar and social side to the game that's very similar to Persona.

Edit: Wrong thread..moved post to the 2019 thread instead of this one.

And there's Doom done. 45 games finished, and my Backloggery is a clean slate for the new year.

I'll say that I probably won't finish anything else this month.

Finished:

  • Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
  • Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past
  • Darksiders: Warmastered Edition
  • Etrian Odyssey Untold: Millennium Girl
  • Doom (2016)

A busy month for me! I finished three huge JRPGs, and three of the games I finished are ones I've been trying to finish for years (Ni No Kuni, Etrian, and Doom).

Darksiders was a replay for SallyNasty's game club and is one of just two full replays for the year. Turns out, I just don't finish many games twice.

Edit: I forgot that I also finished Florence and Gorogoa on Android. I don't track those on Backloggery, so I overlooked them.

Finished:
Steamworld Dig 2
Monster Hunter World
Spider-man

Added:
Surviving Mars
Assassin's Creed Odyssey
Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak

That was a dreadful season of sales and purchases... but I guess that's something positive? Mind, some of these were purchased for my kid and my girlfriend to play, so that sort of lessens my compulsive digital shopping... or so I like to tell myself.

Happy new year or something!

An interesting, educational year for me. My video gaming time has been way less. I miss it. I need to reconsider my lifestyle, choices, and time management to better maximize my leisure time.

Part of it is work. More hours, and things like: I know I have to travel for a week in mid-January, so I'm reluctant to start anything new. Part of it is my own choice to invest much of my leisure time in D&D.

This affected my video gaming choices. Not only have I been pickier, more likely to bounce off games; but I've also been reluctant to start new, complex games because of the investment required. Given the pleasure I've gotten from RPGs and AAA adventure games, that's not great; or, it means I need to accept that I'm a different kind of gamer for now.

My original list:

January 2018: Cosmic Star Heroine; Dear Esther; Icey; Inside; Jotun
February 2018: Monster Hunter: World (January 26)
March 2018: Lost Sphear (January 23)
April 2018: Dishonored 2 (NG+ with Emily) (25 hr); Dishonored: Death of the Outsider (15 hr)
May 2018: Night In the Woods (10-20 hr), The Witness (25 hr)
June 2018: The Last Guardian (15 hr), Pyre (15-20 hr), Republique (20 hr)
July 2018: Shadow Of the Colossus PS4 (Feb 6); Murdered: Soul Suspect (10 hr)
August 2018: Little Nightmares: Secrets Of The Maw; Uncharted: The Lost Legacy (9 hr)
September 2018: NieR: Automata (50 hr)
October 2018: Get Even (15 hr)
November 2018: Secret Of Mana (Feb 15)
December 2018: Biomutant

What I ended up playing:

January 2018: Cosmic Star Heroine (gave up); Dear Esther; Icey; Inside; Jotun (gave up); What Remains Of Edith Finch
February 2018: Monster Hunter: World (gave up)
March 2018: Final Fantasy XV “Royal Edition”
April 2018: (fail - Dead Space series replays)
May 2018: (fail - Dead Space series replays)
June 2018: God Of War
July 2018: Wolfenstein: The New Order
August 2018: (fail - Tomb Raider replays)
September 2018: Shadow of the Tomb Raider
October 2018: (bounced off several short games)
November 2018: NieR: Automata
December 2018: Forgotten Anne

I'd find some positive in there, though. You got to replay FFXV, which I know is a game you really like. I'm tempted to just make 2019 The Year of Final Fantasy what with my VI replay, as sometimes going back to something that you just know you'll love is... well, really, what better use of time is there?

Now, seeing as it is the last day of the year, I will add my end-of-the-year report for 2018.

In summary, I beat and/or completed a total of 40 games across various platforms, while I added 98 new games to my pile, some of which were summarily beaten so the pile's growth was somewhat mitigated.

While I do feel a bit guilty about so many purchases during the year, the fact that the great majority (90%+ or so) were on sale and deeply discounted means I didn't make as large an investment as the sheer number of games would otherwise suggest. Looking at it from a different angle, I have quite a bit of games and variety to look forward to, life and time permitting.

I beat a good number of games, in the end, and that makes me feel good about how much I covered while recognizing how much I enjoyed most of that time. Many of them were titles I'd been playing off and on for months, if not years, while a smaller amount were titles that were completed within weeks or days of initial acquisition.

Without further ado, my list broken down by games new/added and those beaten/completed.

Last month I said I wanted to beat Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, Banjo Tooie and Undertale before the end of the year. Well, I beat two out of the three..I tried returning to Banjo Tooie and had kind of an eh time trying to figure out what to do next. Where's the pure platforming joy of the original?

A lot of games were added but I only paid for two of them (GRIS and Bloodborne). Not sure what got into me to pick up Bloodborne during the psn sale. I'm pretty sure I'll be in for a bad time As for my planned games to beat in 2018, 12 out of 18 isn't bad. I'll have to make a new one for the 2019 thread but I'll probably carry over the ones I didn't get to. It was a nice way to stay focused when I was having trouble deciding what to play next.

These past few days weeks have been really rough, so bear with me here as I turn in my December report a day late.

  • Perceptions of the Dead (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) - Okay I guess.
  • We Were Here Too (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) - Really great. Try to find a buddy and play these games, they're great fun.
  • Moon Hunters (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) - Didn't appeal to me all that much.

Dropped:

  • Agents of Mayhem (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/null.gif) - I had a fun first hour, and then kinda forgot about it.

Played:

  • Guild Wars 2 (PC) IMAGE(https://backloggery.com/images/mastered.gif) - Played lots of Wintersday content. Will be moving along in season three shortly.
  • Pyre (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) - Really solid Supergiant game, I really like it.
  • Seers Isle (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) - Same dev as Along the Edge which I played earlier this year. Small wonder I'm really into it.

Remaining games: 57 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) (55 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif))
Progress (Games): 49 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) + 12 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/null.gif) - 2 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif) = 59
Est. remaining hours: 690 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) (682 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif))
Progress (Est. total hours): 435 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) + 201 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/null.gif) + 4 played IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) - 26 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif) = 614

Backloggery is at 32. Bit of a setback there, it's not as good a year as 2017 (with a Backloggery at 40). But I'm still moving towards pile reduction. Even though I'm now running out of disk space on my 512gig SSD which I dedicate to games. Goals for 2019 will be to clear short games and large games from the Pile. In the near future, there's RiME for the GWJ adventure club and Dragon Age: Origins for the cRPG club. Beyond that, I want to wrap up Pyre and Seers Isle, I'd like to play Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. I'll probably play Pillars of the Earth sooner rather than later, since that one is pretty sizeable and keeps getting second or third place in the adventure game votes. And there's gorgeous, tantalizing AC: Origins I want to get to soon.
Still. A great year for gaming. Looking forward to what 2019 brings.
