Dead Cells or Hollow Knight?

The two games serve different roles for me. Dead Cells is great for when I don't really want to think too hard (and/or when inebriated) and just want to beat stuff up. Hollow Knight is ... well, the exact opposite set of conditions.

If someone says that Hollow Knight is closer to Dark Souls than Dead Cells is, that would tip the scales.

I have a love hate relationship with Hollow Knight.

It is a little slow to get going and I prefer a bit more vibrant environments. But..., some traversal and combat feels really good. After I bang my head against a boss 20 times and then beat him it's a rush of joy and relief. Exploring an area before getting the map can be frustrating, but then getting the map and setting how its laid out is cool.

It's big. There is a lot of area to explore. I don't think I'm good at the game so you may not have as much trouble as me. Several times I was close to quitting, but over the last couple days I've actually uncovered a decent amount of new areas.

Getting new abilities and charms gives you new tools abilities throughout the game.

If you don't mind hard and enjoy doing a lot of exploring I'd say go for it. I don't have any experience with Dead Cells.

Dead Cells is much more random with the maps. So you will have easy runs and really hard runs.

The final boss is also cheaper and more annoying than anything in Hollow Knight. So you might never beat the game. I'm fairly sure I never will, despite making it to the end multiple times.

Still it's pretty fun, the combat is tight, there are some really interesting weapons and enemies. I like it a lot, I just don't love it.

Honestly, what I think I'm really searching for is another Demon/Dark/Blood/Souls/Borne.
Lacking something like that, it sounds like Hollow Knight is closer, unless someone else has another suggestion (I've played Nioh)

Oh my!

Eleima just straight up gifted me Graveyard Keeper!

I can't thank you enough. i was basically just staying out of this sale, hadn't even looked at what was on sale for what discount. I can't thank you enough!

Lords of the Fallen or The Surge?

I preferred Lords of the Fallen. It is probably a little more janky but liked the setting much better.

I found Hollow Knight to be the distillation of nearly everything I enjoyed about Dark Souls. Can't speak to Dead Cells, but from what I think I know of how our tastes align, I would definitely recommend Hollow Knight.

Um.... sorry?

Never apologize for the gift of Graveyard Keeper. It's a keeper.

Sounds like an endorsement to me! Thanks!

The Surge! Taste The Surge. Hello you, stuck in a wheel chair. Don’t you want an exoskeleton to rip the limbs of crazies and giant robots? Of course you do. So go get some Surge today. The Surge.

Also, what is the knick knack badge? I see the Winter Sale badge, is there something different? Thx

Hollow Knight is closer to Dark Souls than Dead Cells is.

Hollow Knight is kind of a mash-up of Dark Souls and a Metroidvania.

Dead Cells is nothing at all like Dark Souls. It's an action-roguelike, with permanent cross-run unlocks; like Rogue Legacy, but with tighter controls and more varied combat options.

I really enjoyed the Surge. Not too long either. Maybe 20 hours.

Hollow Knight was exactly the right choice. I could wish for a little less platforming and a little more in the combat, but that said, it's already got its hooks in me.

Everyone should buy Arcanum for $1.49 and then in a few months, join us in the CRPG Club thread and vote it to be the next choice in a landslide victory.

I literally just bought that (before you posted) because I've never gotten more than about 30 minutes into it.

Hmm...I'm in the middle of replaying Pillars of Eternity, and I never got any of the DLC. White March Parts 1 and 2 for $18, or Pillars of Eternity 2 for $33?

Or... all.

At this point I think we are jinxing it. Whatever games we say will win win next time, get thrown out in the primary.

Definitely both.
But White March first.

I have too many games...

I have too many games...

I have too many games...

(My brother gave me Arcanum on disc years ago and I never played it. He loved it. Now I feel guilty again.)

I exist on this website in a perpetual state of being spited in one way or another.

Many thanks to Bonus Eruptus for the one I didn't buy, Dead Cells!
I'll do some comparisons.

Have you looked at Salt and Sanctuary? Its an unabashed Dark Souls-like in 2d. Its moody and wonderful and hard.

Wallpaper Engine isn't on sell but its on the cheap side. I love it. You can download hundreds of animated wallpapers or make your own. I haven't noticed any resource load.

So far I've only stumped up for Assassin's Creed Origins, and I don't regret it at all. Time to wait for Christmas day now and hope my brother keeps up his habit of gifting me a steam card.

I had been doing well on my mission to not spend a lot of money on games this year because we have been living in France since June and return home to the US in 2 weeks. My wife is doing an unpaid sabbatical where she still gets her salary from her job, but nothing from the university here in France. So...extra expenses.

I had picked up a game here or there on sale, or in a bundle, but things kinda fell apart in November. I think getting close to when I'll have my gaming PC again instead of the laptop pushed me over the edge
I went kinda crazy and picked up...
Kingdom Come: Deliverance (bonus from joining 3 month Humble Monthly)
Divinity: Original Sin 2
Tetris Affect
Frostpunk
The Bard's Tale IV
Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus OMNISSIAH EDITION
Warhammer 40,000: Gladius - Relics of War
BATTLETECH
Two Point Hospital
Oxygen Not Included
Book of Demons
Humble Monthly - Zombie Army Trilogy, Immortal Redneck, Mega Man Legacy Collection, Seven: The Days Long Gone, Cities: Skylines After Dark
Pinball FX3 - Bethesda
Stellaris: Apocalypse
Stellaris: Utopia
Total War: WARHAMMER II

Now hopefully I'm not an idiot and I actually play these when I get back before buying more stuff! I did do well cutting back last year. I still spent too much but I was on the right track. I should probably make a goal in the gaming goals thread.

I'm glad Mutant Year Zero isn't on sale because that would be too tempting I think

I was looking at Stellaris and then seen all the different versions and dlcs and my brain just shut down. Went away without getting anything. I do that a lot for stuff that has lots of versions and dlc.
