I GOT AN HONOURS OFFER AT MY FIRST CHOICE OF UNIVERSITY!!!!

After initially being knocked back, I got a second-round offer at the university I first studied at. Unlike my current provisional offer, they don't demand that I maintain a 6+ GPA (which I have, but has been stressing me out trying to maintain). It's a huge weight off my shoulders. It's closer, it's 3 times less expensive, the interest rate on loans is 25% less, and I'll be getting 2 $1000 payments throughout to year to help with textbooks/other expenses.

The absolute best part is I'm finally working on a proper research project. There's an academic there who's looking for an honours student to help with a range of topics merging virtual reality with psychology, which has been my primary interest ever since I completed my undergrad years ago.

I'm over the moon right now, I can't believe I finally did it. I'm going to do actual research work. It's what I've wanted to do ever since I was a child.

So the one you're going back to is different to the one you were studying at in the middle?

One could say you're

Metal Gear Solid on PS One has you type in some information from the back of the CD case.

DRM before it was cool.

I loved that game soooo much! I think it’s the only game that I ever learned how to speed run. This was pre YouTube. A friend of mine came over and watched me speed run it and was completely captivated.

Yet I’m not remembering having to use the CD case to get through the game. That’s human memory for you.

My favorite thing that...

LibriVox is a website that has public domain books read by volunteers. Sort of DIY audiobooks for free. I think they run quality control on all of the volunteer’s submissions. They have a free app, or you can stream from their website. The app lets you download at home and listen to later.

I’m looking forward to hearing tons of Sherlock Holmes, H.P. Lovecraft, H.G. Wells, JM Barrie, Mark Twain...

Oh wow. Thanks you RawkGWJ. That's exactly what I need.

As I am not aware of a mechanical process for separating arils from pomegranates:
The low low price of pomegranate arils. If you see a cup of pomegranate arils and think it's expensive, it isn't.
I'll buy the juice by itself of course, but it's much better to eat the arils.

Also pomegranate season is almost over AFAIK, so get on the fresh ones while you can.

(Dramatic music optional)

This is how I do it after seeing an old old video of some old old guy doing it the same way, but in about five seconds. All you need is a pocket knife.

Two things:
1) Questlove's book A Creative Quest which I've been listening to as an audio book has fantastic.
And his frequent mentions of Prince led me to 2) Prince - Piano & a Microphone. I never knew this album existed and it's amazing.

I’ve been listening to some of the Sherlock Holmes stories on LibriVox. Holy sh*t, they’re good! It’s like listening to Neil Gaiman stories that were written 120 years ago.

I just finished A Study in Scarlet as read by David Clarke. That man is a superb orator. I’m going to listen everything he’s read on LibriVox.

You can download or stream from the website, but the mobile app might be the best way to go. There’s a free version with adverts between chapters but the ad free $1.99 version is pure gold.

Yes! LibriVox has some great free stuff. The Sherlock Holmes is at the top of the list! I went through it back in the day.

I’ve got Lovecraft (chronologically as written) and Plato’s The Republic queued up as well. Last night I mostly listened to The Skeptic’s Guide to the Universe book which I bought through Audible. I get paid to drive around Southern California in the middle of the night. Audiobooks are one of my favorite forms of stimulation.

Spoiler:

Singing is my favorite way to stay alert when I’m feeling sleepy. I either practice my choir parts or just sing along with my favorite jams. It works like magic for waking myself up.

On a related note, Audible gave away Neil Gaiman's A Study in Emerald a ways back

it is fantastic, my favorite story in Fragile Things by far.

The person I am supposed to find in my current quest in AC Odyssey is named...

Testikles.

I think Ubisoft is trolling me.

Today is my last day of work until the new year. We've barely had time to take a breath since moving into the new house, and I'm finally looking forward to some (possibly) relaxing days where I just put on sweats and play games all day. The six-year-old may decide to exercise veto powers, but it'll still be fun.

My friend told me of this. Your in for a good time.

My cat as she likes to join in dancing about the kitchen.

Got an unexpected xmas bonus.

Just paid off my car almost a year early!!!!!!!! This is such a big step towards getting my finances in better shape than they are. The money for car payments now gets to start going into credit card payments and then once that is taken care of I can start making huge dents in my student loan payments.

Woop woop, congrats! We're having exciting moments like this now too. almost out of CC debt and then tackle our car and Student loans. GD chains around our neck.

Having a friend come over to watch good anime, and make fun of bad anime and their dubs. It's the greatest I say.

Yeah my wife paid off her school loans finally in Sept. Was a big moment. Car is close, a few more months. Then it will just be the mortgage.

Makes you really grow a pair.

The Spidey Christmas Album is real and Spectacular.

Jake Johnson is a f*cking treasure. I can't think of a better choice for broken Peter Parker.

The actual sound track I'm obsessed with btw.

I love the little notes Japanese eBay sellers often include, it's cute! Nice to know they also love pork bone ramen!

Also, Donkey Kong GB is REALLY GREAT. It's often overlooked because people assume it's just a downsized port of the arcade game. The first few levels are pretty much straight from the original, but then it turns into an amazing little platformer. I believe this is the first game where Mario can do his high backflip etc. It's far too good for the console it was released on. Really surprising!

Edit: "Too good for the system it was released on" feels like a bit much considering some of the other GB gems, but I'm just really excited about it!

Yeah Donkey Kong '94! Made my top twentyish this year.

Yeah. I love the little “thank you”s from Japanese sellers and smaller companies. Half the time it’s a paper crane, but it still makes me smile.

I got a nice note with a totoro stamp on it with the japanese screwdrivers i recently ordered! I
