For me it'll depend on ping times to the NA servers, but I'll give it a shot 
In the end, if the Official server route goes wrong, then hopefully the unofficial server hosting won't be entirely stripped down..

So it looks like you'll basically be able to run your own cluster of X number of servers, expanding the world map? wonder how that translates in the coverage of the actual map, and if you get to chose which 'sector' each server runs the map for (obviously being connected sectors).
Totally different methodology for hosting unofficial servers..
So what is the scoop with the modding/tools for this game?
Do you have to run a private server to use them?
Do you have to pay extra or do they come with the game?
They sound really promising while at the same time they generate concerns of overwhelming...

Mods don't cost extra, generally. Using Ark as the example, some hosting companies have a drop-down menu to install the most popular mods, others it's more manual process.
A good number of the mods that were popular in Ark have been encapsulated in Atlas, or in some cases, the mod dev was hired directly. The guy that made S+ building mod for Ark has been working on it, and the building in Atlas should be more akin to an expanded S+, than it is to base Ark.
Right now, though, there's not a lot of information out there, so we'll have to wait and see. Tbh though, I think I prefer the short time between announcement and release, and finding out things in-game my (our) selves, rather than having a year's worth of reading about it and knowing almost everything before even logging in.

This is really good to see! I like when companies appreciate/reward talent from people that have a passion for their work and there is no more passion than someone that spends countless hours working to make wonderful mods for free. The S+ mods really made the building in ARK 1,000X better.

Did the launch get pushed again? I loaded up the steam page and the timer for the buy option is missing.
Yesterday it was there counting down to 1pm EST.
Counter on Steam was wrong apparently, but their website has it's own countdown and there's 7 hours to go.

While the game’s Steam page suggests deployment begins around 1 p.m. EST Dec. 19, its official website has a countdown timer currently set to conclude at 6 p.m. EST Dec. 19. For now, keep an eye on both those times. It’s possible both may be correct, in that downloads go live at 1 p.m. EST but servers will remain offline until 6 p.m. EST.

We’ll do our best to update this story with the confirmed launch time as we learn it, but when you’re dealing with an early access game, and a studio that’s an offshoot of Studio Wildcard, it can sometimes be difficult to nail down exact details. After all, ATLAS was initially announced for release Dec. 13 and had to be delayed for last-minute tweaks. Was there any doubt the launch would be a disaster? Doesn't matter, I will probably still pick it up, I enjoy these open-world building games too much.
Why in the hell are they rushing this out the door like this??
I always get confused with people d taking about not being ready for early access. That's the whole point of early access. Having spent some time in the disaster zone of the official discord, you'd think it was going full release 
I'm ready for the disaster, that's a given, and it'll be fun either way
The problem is that EA isn't really early access, it's "official launch 1" with the full release being "official launch 2". If you have a disaster at EA launch you may never recover. This game probably will since Ark sales probably fund the studio for another decade, but for other devs they need to have a good, stable product so they don't get review bombed.
Yeah, I guess that's the down side of bigger studios doing early access from this stage. For no-name Indies, there's slightly less pressure to get it right on day one.
Anyway, this whole thing could indeed have been done better. From the delay a few days after announcement, right to saying that there will be another 3 minute trailer the other day, which still hasn't appeared....

Followed by however long it'll take you to download 30GB, followed by X number of hours trying to log in to crashing servers

Countdown is 0 but it's still not available on Steam. I'm wrapping the grand kids Christmas presents with my wife and we (mostly me) have polished off a 1/3 bottle of Four Roses Bourbon. I may not play at all tonight

I've been in there for days. It's been eye opening. The mix of players from Ark, Rust, Eve, ED, ArchAge and numerous others, will all but ensure that the PvP servers are a complete shitshow for the first good while.
At one stage, there were around 600 people in Voice Chat in that discord channel. Hopefully most of the faff bog off again in a few weeks once the big streamers have moved on again.
Delayed until Friday now.
My son and I are both on the day 1 bandwagon for this. I wont likely get to play until Friday evening, but he'll be on for sure. I assume someone here will call Dibs on a server and we'll try and pile in?
That's the plan. I also created a channel on Discord for people to join.
