LEGO Nostalgia

Yes, take some sandpaper to rough up the finish so the primer holds on to it.

So, there are some new pictures of the 2019 Speed Champions sets at Brothers-Brick. I have to be honest, I'm kind of disappointed. I think the Ferrari set is going for a retro Lego look, which is cute but ultimately not that good looking. I think I like that Mini most of all.

I actually like them. I want the Ferrari, McLaren, and the '70 Charger.

Funny enough, having taken a second look just a day ago, I think the Camaro and the McLaren have grown on me. I still like the Mini, but not $50 like.

I have never repainted LEGO, but...

Some fine sandpaper would work to scuff them up. The "scuffing" does help the primer/paint stick.

As an aside....

A friend was looking at my VW Bus and Bug the other day and asked if I glued my bricks together when I built the sets.

This was supposedly a common practice among his friends (he is 35) at the time.

I am 50, and I almost puked when he said "glue the bricks?"

BEWARE THE KRAGLE!

I can see why maybe way back people may have glued sets together a long time ago but the tolerances are so tight and the shapes have been expanded so that things like curves are more fleshed out the last 20 years that I have never needed to glue anything for it to stick together really well.

The only time I have issues is when one of my cats jumps up on the dresser and steals the antennas off the second Ecto-1 to play with.

Gluing Legos together means never having to say "Sure, I'll take $300 for that retired set!"...

Quick question for those in the know - we have boxes and boxes of LEGO, including an entire stack of instruction books from kits over the years. Some of them go back to the 80s from when I was a kid and getting LEGO sets for Christmas. I don't need them, and my kids have never really been into LEGO. Is it worth it to try to rebuild some of these old sets, separate them out, and offer them up for sale? I'd hate to have them just sitting in my basement for the next several decades.

Maybe. I'll throw out another suggestion. Many schools and other similar children facilities are looking for donations.
My son's elementary school is relatively new so teachers have requested items, like Legos, to occupy the kids when not on an academic task, in door recess or whatever.

I'd probably scour ebay and bricklink to see what your sets sell for, I assume you know what you have because of instruction manuals. And then decide whether it's worth your time. But we're still talking hundreds of dollars, not thousands.

You could also always offer them up here for sale. Some of use are Lego Fanatics. Some of us would love the old sets. I know I might be interested in some depending on prices/shipping cost.

Either way post some pics. I like looking at lego piles!

It would definitely be worth it to sell SOME of the sets if you had ALL the pieces. At the same time it is gonna take a chunk of time to get those pieces together as well. You can also sell Lego by the pound for a good price on craigslist or ebay.

That's a nice idea, I'll keep that in mind. I'm certain there would be a huge pile of bricks left over even if I were to try to re-assemble some of the kits to get rid of individually.

I am over the moon after opening my Christmas present from mom:

Not a bad gift for a "kid" who was born in 1968.

awesome! It's a really fun build.

It is! Great build! And you can display it horizontally, in stages, rather than assembled vertically. Looks really great on a shelf.

Cats stole the antennae from the front of my SHIELD helicarrier.

Been thinking about that Bugatti ever since I saw it at the Lego store. I want the new porsche though also.

Darn it, I should have gotten out my Lego Movie 1 Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP build and tried to fit it somehow into the photo. It's up on a top shelf out the way and I'd forgotten it while posing my classic spacemen (and spacewomen).

New Porsche?

I feel the same way about the Bugatti (I wasn't that excited about it until I saw it in the store. It's huge) but just spent a lot of money on other sets for Christmas (James Bond Aston Martin for Mrs. Abu, Parisian Restaurant for Abu Family, Porg & Great Hall (Harry Potter) for AbuKidlet)

I got a BB-8 for Christmas this year. Not a huge build, but the gizmos built into it are pretty neat. I might try and rig up a rubber band on the welder arm so that the door opens and closes along with the arm. Having to do it manually is annoying when the rest works so neatly.

I picked up a few sets this weekend and by far my favorite was the deep sea creatures creator set. Really cool.

I agree. It's one of those sets that I would like to just get three copies so I can have all three displayed at once.
