Star Trek: Discovery Catch-All [Spoilers]

Was pretty standard for the Mirror Universe really. That bit of lore has been there since TOS, as has some of the corny, over-the-top theatrics.

Spoiler:

Why are they talking about Section 31 like it's an open secret? That's remarkably annoying. Section 31 was a f*cking revelation in Deep Space Nine. Now, it's, oops, we all know about this clandestine organization that has actually been exceptionally well-hidden since the original Starfleet charter, except not because we need plots.

The first few episodes really struggle to find a footing, and felt very heavy and plodding. I definitely felt that there was a pickup in steam after the first three or so? By the end the boyfriend and I were happy to continue watching and were looking forward to it every week.

My opinion is, no. If you didn't like what you've seen already, the show gets worse. I actually liked the earlier episodes as I was giving them some time to find their footing. They had some good character development - especially the captain. Then the second half of the season goes completely off the rails.

Someone needs to play tie breaker.

I also gave up on the show after three episodes and I'm considering giving it a second shot.

Well, FWIW, I really enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to season two, and I’m not watching to trailer because I want to go in fresh.

Yup

The first season is very uneven, but it has some really good stuff in it. I'm glad I waited to binge the whole thing rather than watch it week to week, and I'm looking forward to the new season. I'll wait til it's finished to watch.

I've never been a fan of the mirror universe in Trek, so I'll be happy if they completely ignore it going forward.

Yup

Yes, and:

Spoiler:

their immediate expertise about the mirror universe, when it looks like their timeline comes before the ST:TOS Enterprise crew first went there (Pike is still Captain of the Enterprise)

Same, here. I wonder where they can go with the mirror universe, other than to finally admit that that's where we the viewers have been living the entire time.

Love season 1 when I could watch it as a whole. My favorite standalone had to be the Harry Mudd time loop episode. I acknowledge that they're violating continuity with other ST series, but it's a small price to pay for quality Trek. Looking forward to season 2.

Star Trek: Enterprise takes place before Discovery, and they went to the Mirror Universe. I think Discovery acknowledged this in the first season.

Ah, OK. That makes sense. Thanks. So:

Spoiler:

the retcon occurred in STE not STD. Hard to keep my retcons straight.

Regarding Discovery Season 1, I think of it like this: it's the best and strongest Season 1 Star Trek we've received so far. I mean, TNG took like three seasons to hit a stride. If you're a Trek fan, at least give the whole first season of Discovery a try. It's FAR from perfect, but I can see the direction they want to go, and I'm looking forward to the stories that will be told through this show.

It's funny that all of the things I find wrong with this show are directly tied to the fact that it is a prequel/reboot/whatever and they are rehashing old stories and characters that have largely been done to death. Give us some new stuff please. Nope, we're getting...

Spoiler:

Section 31, Klingons (with proper hair), and Spock

I had the same issue with Star Trek Into Darkness: they had this great opportunity to tell a story about an alternate timeline where certain people in Starfleet have gotten so freaked out over the destruction of Vulcan that they'd go against their values and preemptively start attacking other cultures (sound familiar?). Instead the whole third act devolved into big splodies, KAHHHHHHNNNNNN!!! and Kirk not dying.

It's disappointing to me that, after 4 series of moving the story and setting forward in time, we're now stuck with several reboots and prequels. Even though I like several of them, it would be nice to move things forward instead of endlessly cashing in on nostalgia.

This actually isn't what happened. Star Trek: Enterprise, the television show took us to the mirror universe, but it was a two-parter that took place wholly in the mirror universe. The only interaction with the prime universe in Enterprise was the USS Defiant (TOS Defiant, not DS9 Defiant) moving into their universe and backwards through time.

The prime universe NX01 Enterprise & crew didn't know any of that was happening.

Ok, yup, had totally forgotten that's how it played out.

I enjoyed it and have actually kept my CBS access sub to support it.

I enjoyed the first season. It was uneven, sure, but found a stride leading to the finale. Overall, I found it quite worth my time.

Great characters. Saru. Stamets. TIlly. Culber. Lorca. Georgio. I dug them all.

I'm down for season two. My wife is undecided.

And there was no way for Kirk, McCoy, Scotty, and Uhura to know what they were getting into because...

Spoiler:

...Starfleet ordered Discovery's trip to the MU classified and even if Kirk had clearance, he obviously couldn't access the records from the ISS Enterprise.

I'm disappointed that Discovery was a prequel too, but we do we have the Picard show to move things forward. That show will be set in the year 2400.

The latest short was pretty good. I thought it was going for a twist.

Spoiler:

I thought it was going to end in the mirror verse.

Yep. It was a bit uneven, but overall a solid experience and I'm on tenterhooks for the new season.

The first trailer is really good, I came out confused and curious which should be the goal of a trailer. Won't watch any others in case some storyline starts to leak.

Just going to reiterate that the latest (last?) trailer for Season 2 is a stupid amount of spoilery.

Series 2 hits Netflix in a couple days over here, can't wait!

I'm quite jealous. I still refuse to negotiate with the CBS terrorists here in the states

In anticipation of Season 2, I'm reading up on some of the characters and wondered who that "Daft Punk" lookin' person is. I still don't know much about them, but this is pretty damn great:

That was a very, very good season opener.

Yeah, I had my expectations low but this was still an enjoyable episode and definitely the best one they've done yet.

The dude that exploded was totally unnecessary, don't know why they wasted screentime with that, I figured he'd be gone the moment he started talking lol.

Do we know how many episodes this season will have, and if they're going to do some kind of mid-season break like last year?

Thirteen, I believe, and no break.

Excellent

That was a very, very good episode. Jonathan Frakes' directing strikes gold again, and Captain Pike is quickly becoming a favorite captain.

Spoiler:

I was actually surprised when we discovered that the woman helping Tilly was her imaginary friend. When she suddenly appeared and disappeared on the bridge, it was quite a reveal to my wife and I.

Also I hope that we get to revisit New Eden and Jacob again. I was fully expecting them to pull a TNG-style "you can come with us" moment with him, but trading the helmet camera for a power cell was just as good.

I think that everyone who disliked Season 1 should skip over it and try watching Season 2. It's good Trek.
