Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - Smash All

I'm struggling a bit in handheld mode when there's 5 or 6 fighters on screen in WoL. I know there's a lot going on in every game on screen (my girlfriend actually commented on this, questioning how I knew what was going on in just a 1v1 game), but some of the squad battles are quite difficult to keep track of. I'm wondering if I'll have to go full screen for these.

You're not alone. I have to wear reading glasses to tell what's going on handheld. No problems on the big TV though.

For complicated reasons I was playing in a table top mode earlier and I was a little bit back from the screen. Hadn't a clue what was going on!

How's everyone doing with the new challenger battles? I'm a bit disappointed in myself to be honest... It's unusual for me to beat them first time. I've gotten everyone the second time at the latest apart from one, so it's not too bad. But I'd like to do better with my first attempts. Some of those battles have been awful!

My worst was Little Mac... Took me four attempts! Twice I had him close to 200% and he still launched me first! Got him in the end though.

Yeah I'm pretty new to smash and am about 50/50 on beating the new challengers.

There was a Reddit thread about losing challenger battles. Happening to some of the good streamers out there too.

Another thread about unlocking the characters also had a bunch of comments about losing challenger approaching battles.

Not just you.

So far have always won on the 2nd try at least. I was devastated when I lost to ZSS and it took quite a while for the menu to appear to retry her.

Ok that makes me feel better.

I won't worry about it so much. If the point is that you're supposed to earn it then I'm cool with it. I think Little Mac hurt the most for me. Especially the second time, I had my strategy and I was sticking to it, then - like I said - I had him at about 180-190% and knocked him off the screen fast at least four times. Really thought I had him cause I was in my 40s. Then out of no-where I'd suddenly gotten launched!

I've done maybe four challenger battles and only lost to Bowser so far. I'm wondering if the difficulty of the challenger battles is dynamically set, though. I lent my copy of Super Smash Bros. 4 to my friend and his kids, and when I was last over a new challenger fight for me was quite challenging while another one was quite easy for his 7 year-old. We had handicap on so I'm guessing the game was set to modify A.I. based on player performance and metrics.

This is just guess work though. Otherwise I imagine unlocking new characters would be easier.

My daughters and I have managed to unlock about half the fighters just by playing through Classic mode and then passing the controller. Some of the challengers were really difficult; Little Mac, Mega-Man, Richtor, and Luigi come to mind. Have to say I’m really impressed by most of the stages, even the ones from older games are significantly improved and look incredible.

Its interesting to compare notes...agree completely about Little Mac, but I literally just fought Richtor and he barely touched me. Definitely the easiest fighter I've faced so far. I'd love to know how the difficulty is worked out. I had just lost a match when Richtor approached so I wonder if your last match is taken into account? Like how Classic get a harder the better you do?

I definitely think that has something to do with it. I’ve noticed sometimes if I do really well and end up with a higher intensity challenges seem much harder. I’ve had some fights that were so ridiculous that I couldn’t land a single hit no matter what I did, only to challenge the same fighter again later and win with ease.

I could have sworn people here were saying that any character you unlocked in any mode you unlocked in all modes, but none of the "Challenger Appeared" unlocks I've made after Classic Mode or Spirit Board matches are available in the World of Light.

Yeah I wonder if the challenger difficulty is dynamic. My first one was super easy, to the point that Ness barely even moved or tried to attack. But then some were just brutal.

Ah, that's a weird one. World of Light wants to test you, I guess, so you gotta unlock the different characters within it. However, any character unlocked within World of Light first is then available in all other modes.

I got worked by Ridley several times. It seems like some of the battles are much harder than others, but I'm not sure why exactly. It definitely seems like Challengers that come after multiplayer matches are several notches harder than those after Classic mode, unless I dialed up the difficulty.

Never played its earlier incarnations, but my 10 year old has been dying to play this one. So he's merrily been going through WoL and been pretty successful. Sat on the couch with him this evening playing 1v1 and never been so frustrated … admittedly I am 40 years his senior, with the twitch reactions of a sloth on Prozac, but mainly ... I just wish I could unbind taunt.

Well never mind that. Lost to Dark Samus twice but got her on the 3rd and now lost to Ridley 3 times, waiting for 4th shot. Ugh.

I'm sure someone will figure out the difficulty mechanics, and I look forward to hearing the explanation when they do.

I haven't faced Dark Samus yet but I did fight Ridley and that was another straightforward one for me. I don't think for a second that I'm just that good (cause I'm not) so there's definitely something up.

(Edit: It occurs to me that we can't even give each other hints cause of how the difficulty works. I've no idea how to advise you about Ridley cause for me they didn't put up much of a fight. That's a fun aspect of this, we each seem to face our own challenges.)

I wonder if the game factors in your history with the character you're using... Falco approached as I left WoL one time so I was stuck playing as Kirby instead of my usual Link. In spite of making a mess of controlling Kirby I still won with little challenge. At the other end of the scale, the first time I face Isabel I may as well have put down my controller. It was ridiculous! Similarly, I've just hit a new low in that King Dedede has beaten me four times.

Spoiler:

F*cking Asshole!

Still loving this game. I think I've put about 9 hours in and I feel like I've barely scratched the surface. I've got about 44 fighters and I've played maybe a third of the stages. So much left to see and do! I love it.

I'm surprising myself by mainly doing 2.30min Smash fights against random CPUs and working my waythrough the stages. I thought I'd be all about WoL at first but Smash mode is so much fun!

He’s destroyed me as well. No matter what I do he always seems to end up in the right place, and every attack he does is a smash attack that sends me flying. Literally right before him I fought Rosalina and it was so easy I knocked her out in less than 30 seconds. Both of these were in the challenge door, which make no sense at all. Maybe the difficulty is randomly determined at the start of a match.

Can anyone recommend any good beginner guides/videos for the fighting mechanics? I've looked at some of the in-game tutorials/videos/tips, but I'd like more. I feel like I'm just mashing buttons and not executing technically like I would in Street Fighter or Tekken.

I still don't think I really "get" the spirits for the Adventure mode.

He's so annoying. It really seemed that if I was within his reach he was hitting me with a heavy attack. Didn't matter what I or he were doing a second earlier, he was hitting me.

I managed to beat him on my fifth (I think) try, I focused on slowly raising his % with ranged attacks while trying to stay as far away from him as I could. Eventually I managed to get the timing right to connect with a strong attack and launch him. My honour has been restored.

It would help to understand what about 'em you're not getting, but perhaps it would help to think of them as equipment rather than characters. You're essentially choosing which buffs you want to go into a fight with. Primary spirits each have attack and defense values to them, and by equipping them for combat they level up and increase their attack and defense boosts. Each of these is applied to your character, so going up against a spirit that's ranked, say, 5000 is going to be easier if you've leveled your primary spirit up to base power 3000 than base power 1500.

It's an RPG element that took the trophies from prior games and turned them into stat-buffs in World of Light. Thus far I haven't had to think too hard about what I'm going into combat with, but some of the tougher challenges I'll likely wish to be more picky. For example, there's a fight against Zero Suit Samus as Big Boss that was kicking my rear pretty savagely no matter what I tried. However, she's also at power 13,000+.

There's also that factor of Rock, Paper, Scissors ripped straight outta Fire Emblem. The game will tell you whether the opponent is weak to your current set up or not in the upper-right hand corner, so you don't have to memorize (though it kind of functions similarly to in-game: grab > shield > sword > grab).

Speaking of, the only disappointment I've found is that all of the three-slot Sword primaries are considerably weaker than my other three-slot categories, and Buzz Buzz includes the detriment of starting combat with 30% damage. I might have to just settle for sticking with two-slot Sword spirits.

Also also: I not only spent the past two nights staying up beyond midnight playing this game, I woke up sick and thus sat in my pajamas playing this all morning like I was a kid. I've got half the World of Light map cleared out.

I think I love this game, you guys.

It uses the same color scheme as FE at least. Red > Green > Blue > Red, and then there's a neutral gray one that has no (dis)advantage to any.

Right there with you buddy. Also I'm up all hours with the baby. But as I coax her back to sleep... Smash!

Me too, this game is awesome!

Fourthing. This is one of those games that are love letters to gaming that reminds my why I liked all of this in the first place.

My daughter walked in and beat him with Ice Climbers on the first try, so he’s finally out of the way. We still can’t seem to take down Isabelle, she’s a beast.

Yeah, I'm having Isabella troubles of my own. And my thumbs hurt, I think I finally need to get a Pro controller.

So glad you're struggling with Isabella Isabelle too (and apologies to any Animal Crossing fans for calling her Isabel earlier). My first battle with her was probably the most one-sided battle I've had. Is that a fishing line she has? It's lethal!

I'd recommend a Pro-Controller, I find it very comfortable and an all-round great controller. D-Pad on the original isn't amazing but everything else is imo.

Edit: Dammit!

What amuses me about Isabelle is that she's kind of "hidden away" in World of Light. There's no way she'll be an early unlock.

I feel like I'm unlocking all of my friends' favorites instead of my own, but it'll do. I think I'm going to spend some time doing Classic or Century-Smash with Simon, Link, Young Link, and Pit, be it to reacquaint myself with them or to learn them.

I've been using Bowser primarily after unlocking him in World of Light, though that was quite a troublesome battle. Had to swap from Marth to Donkey Kong, whom I have little experience with, in order to do enough damage, have a better recovery, and just sustain more damage as well.

Same with Bowser in WoL.
